APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 30, 2005 (MJD 53401) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Howard Brewington, Pete Newman Support: Atsuko Nitta, Scot Kleinman, Connie Rockosi (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- There is a problem with goStare in the new version of SOP, so we reverted to version v3_143_0a. Consequently, plate 2061 exposures tonight have the wrong number of pixels, but should be usable. Finished 4 plates (1976, 2050, 2052, 2086) and got good data on 1 other (2061), despite the start of the night being lost to clouds and end to high humidity. We had to refocus sp1 twice. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- No issues during afternoon checkout, but the focus of the spectrographs were not checked (this was probably a mistake on our part given later events). We delayed opening for about an hour after sunset while orographic clouds harrased us. We then opened under patchy cloud for spectroscopy, with the plan being to only get a pointing model if the current pointing proves inefficient, and probably then only after moonrise. During opening, watcher reported: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2005-01-31 01:00:54Z sdssmcp): 2005-01-31 01:01:01Z) 02:00Z Plate 2061, cartridge 4. Not done in 1 exposure, 1200 s. SEGUE faint plate requiring S/N^2 > 50 in all cameras. Cleared offsets easily found an FK5 about 8 arcsec west of cleared offsets with the telescope in the west (az, alt) = (-98, 58). During this preCalibs for this plate, we realised we were getting a new error message from SoS for _every_ exposure, e.g.: sdR-b1-00030715.fit: WARNING: Expecting 2128x2069, found 2128x 2070 sdR-b1-00030715.fit: WARNING! Config file dimensions do not match raw image We discussed this with Scot & Atsuko, and we guess this may be an artifact of the changes to goStare made for the imager in the new version of IOP. (During shake testing, we found the imager worked fine, but did not test the spectrographs!). However, there were changes to the SoS computer at the same time (new disk installed) and we needed to determine if the problem was with the data or SoS. We finished the first science exposure on this plate (exposure number 30724), then switched back to the previous version of SOP (v3_143_0a) and took a bias - bingo: no errors. So we reverted to IOP v3_143_0a and will pass the problem back to Connie. PR 6332 filed. Despite the warning, SoS was able to make sense of the data, and Connie advised the data are eminently rescuable, so we will leave the exposures with the extra row of data for FNAL to try to reduce. The design time for this plate had passed, so we moved on. 02:53Z Plate 2050, cartridge 7. Done in 3 exposures, 3007 s, when combined with data from MJD 53387. SEGUE bright plate requiring S/N^2 > 15 in blue cameras. Guide stars found with a guess a further 10 arcsec west of pointing from the previous plate, with the telescope in the southwest (az, alt) = (-31, 45). Camera b1 had anomylously low S/N reported by SoS, so we aimed for S/N^2 > 30 in b2, but got more than enough when we (finally!) noticed there was signal on this plate from last dark run! 04:10Z Plate 2052, cartridge 3. Done in 3 exposures, 2490 s. SEGUE bright plate requiring S/N^2 > 15 in blue cameras. SoS reported that both the preCalib flat and arc were out of focus for sp1, so we adjusted, losing ~40 minutes. See end of log for details. 05:53Z Plate 2086, cartridge 2. Done in 3 exposures, 3120 s. SDSS. FK5 found just on edge of fiber. SoS reported sp1 cameras to again be out of focus (Xsigma out of tolerance)! We are not sure why that should be, but this time we moved the rotator to 45deg before refocussing. Again, see end of log for details. 07:47Z Plate 1976, cartridge 6. SDSS. Done in 3 exposures, 4726 s. Guide stars on gotoField. We were working against the Moon. 09:36Z The dewpoint depression has been running along the lower limit for some time, so we close before frosting the mirrors. We did not reopen. endNight completed successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5131 22:20Z 00:16Z 100 O 174.61 -156.38 43 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): Yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30720, plate -9999 ------- 22:11 30720 0.0 bias NB: Wrong number of pixels! 22:14 30721 0.0 bias " ----- sequence 30722, plate 2061 ------- 7.6 6.9 9.2 6.9 Not done 02:13 30722 10.0 flat NB: Wrong number of pixels! 02:16 30723 2.0 arc " 02:41 30724 1200.1 target " ----- sequence 30725, plate -9999 ------- 02:45 30725 0.0 bias Correct number of pixels from here on. 02:51 30726 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30727, plate 2050 ------- --.- 16.9 20.4 34.3 MJD 53387 03:02 30727 10.0 flat 5.1 5.4 32.1 40.8 Tonight 03:04 30728 2.0 arc ---- ---- ---- ---- 03:28 30729 1200.1 target 5.1 22.3 52.5 75.1 DONE 03:51 30730 1200.1 target 04:05 30731 607.2 target ----- sequence 30732, plate 2052 ------- 18.3 20.5 18.0 6.5 DONE 04:20 30732 10.0 flat Out of focus! 04:22 30733 2.0 arc Out of focus! 04:37 30734 2.2 arc Hartman 04:39 30735 2.1 arc Hartman 04:56 30736 10.0 flat 04:58 30737 2.0 arc 05:22 30738 1200.2 target 05:37 30739 689.9 target 05:49 30740 600.1 target ----- sequence 30741, plate 2086 ------- 14.2 15.7 16.7 18.2 DONE 06:05 30741 10.0 flat Out of focus again! 06:07 30742 2.0 arc " 06:18 30743 2.1 arc Hartman 06:20 30744 2.1 arc " 06:39 30745 10.0 flat 06:41 30746 2.0 arc 07:00 30747 900.1 target 07:23 30748 1200.1 target 07:43 30749 1020.2 target ----- sequence 30750, plate 1976 ------- 13.5 17.9 16.8 21.3 DONE 07:55 30750 10.0 flat 07:57 30751 2.0 arc 08:17 30752 900.1 target 08:40 30753 1200.1 target 09:02 30754 1200.1 target 09:29 30755 1426.2 target 09:32 30756 10.0 flat 09:35 30757 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:58Z 7 2050 -40.39 -0.0024 42.17 -0.0018 146.66 -0.0300 1.000170 05:06Z 3 2052 -31.17 -0.0016 53.04 -0.0015 154.14 -0.0003 0.999990 06:50Z 2 2086 45.90 -0.0026 78.46 0.0009 221.48 0.0521 1.000090 08:05Z 6 1976 115.77 -0.0002 61.81 -0.0006 -85.07 -0.0052 1.000070 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8813 Stays: JL8814 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:58Z 7 2050 1.00017 -1679 93 275 -40 42.2 -5.2 10 356 BG38 1.5 05:06Z 3 2052 0.99999 99 1453 200 -31 53.1 -5.1 8 346 BG38 1.5 06:50Z 2 2086 1.00009 -889 584 200 46 78.4 -5.3 9 356 BG38 1.5 08:05Z 6 1976 1.00007 -691 776 200 116 61.8 -6.6 8 34 BG38 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:00Z 29 14 15 268 (W) -9999 - Patchy cloud 22:32Z 25 13 7 268 (W) -9999 - " 23:04Z 24 13 16 296 (WNW) -9999 - " 23:57Z 25 14 8 284 (WNW) -9999 - " 00:29Z 24 13 4 273 (W) -9999 - " 01:01Z 22 13 9 301 (WNW) -9999 - " 01:33Z 22 13 7 333 (NNW) -9999 - " 02:05Z 21 12 10 321 (NW) -9999 - " 02:37Z 22 13 2 324 (NW) -9999 - " 03:07Z 22 12 7 329 (NNW) -9999 - Photometric 03:38Z 22 12 5 339 (NNW) -9999 - " 04:09Z 22 12 5 330 (NNW) -9999 - " 04:40Z 23 12 8 7 (N) -9999 - " 05:11Z 22 12 11 354 (NNW) -9999 - " 05:43Z 22 12 8 3 (N) -9999 - " 06:15Z 22 9 13 12 (NNE) -9999 - " 06:46Z 22 12 5 358 (NNW) -9999 - " 07:18Z 21 12 4 49 (NE) -9999 - " 07:48Z 21 13 3 88 (E) -9999 - " 08:18Z 21 14 9 24 (NNE) -9999 - " 08:48Z 21 14 7 32 (NNE) -9999 - " 09:19Z 20 14 6 26 (NNE) -9999 - " 09:49Z 20 16 8 12 (NNE) -9999 - " 10:20Z 20 15 3 75 (ENE) -9999 - " 10:52Z 21 14 3 30 (NNE) -9999 - " 11:24Z 21 14 7 46 (NE) -9999 - " 11:57Z 20 15 10 36 (NE) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:30Z Doors open, fans on. 01:45Z Enclosure off. 09:45Z Enclosure on, fans off: high humidity.
