APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday April 11, 2005 (MJD 53472) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Howard Brewington Mike Harvanek (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Few clouds with very good seeing made it a very good spectro night. Jen, we got lots of data for you to take care of. We finished 8 plates and 1/3 on the 9th. During the last plate when we tried to gotoField, we saw many error message saying that the command was not valid and check for spelling. I have saved the tcclog around the time of the this at ank@sdsshost:bummer.log This cost us about 20 min. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The spectro collimation was not adjusted. Numbers are in the Problems section. No problems to report. Night: ------ xxx <--- This is where Mike insisted on passing off the log. We told him he could keep it as long as he liked -- all night long -- but he declined our offer. 01:40Z Opened. THe sky looks photometric. We wish successful Pope election outcome for Our Sir Robert the Good. We prayed to the sunset and the photometric sky and every stars we could see for the good outcome. Howard went to realign the DIMM during twilight. cart 1 plate 1990 -------------------- It was too bright to see the guide stars, so we went to FK5 first. We will do preFlat and preArc in sequence rather than using the preCalib command. 02:20Z Guide stars show subarc"seeing. And do does the big scope and the dimm scope. 02:43Z Science exposure started ~15min before the twilight is over. We are being very efficient. So we reduce to 10mim exposures. We finished with 3 exposures. SoS asked for postCalib for the last exposure, but we have already moved on. Cart 3 Plate 1694 ------------------- 03:45Z guideStarsOngotoField. Finished with 3 science exposures. Cart 5 plate 2005 ------------------ We see clouds zipping through AZ heading towards us. So we stay spectroing. 04:57Z guide start on gotoField. 05:52Z first bits of clouds arrive. Finished in three exposures. Cart 6 plate 1626 -------------------- We had to use FK5 to find our field. We finished with 3 exposures. Howard is making me work really hard tonight......... Maybe I will loose some weight? (I gained lots of weight while eating all my favorite food in Japan.) Cart 2 Plate 2105 ------------------ stars on gotoField. Three exposures finished this plate. Cart 4 Plate 1971 ------------------ GSOGTF. As we calib, we get clouds coming in. We knew clouds were coming, we did not know how fast before we see it in the cloud camera. We finished in three exposures and I get to change cartridges again. Cart 8 plate 1686 ------------------ Fk5ed. We are looking at the opposite direction from the last plate. Finished after 3 exposures. I need a massage.... ***** To Don & Ron ***** I hope the new DA system is being designed around a massage chair. Yes, it should be interlocked and the the status of it should be under the "Critical System" next to the lava lamp in Watcher. But, Eric, I do not think endNight should depend upon its status or usage. *************************** Cart 7 Plate 1840 -------------------- Fk5ed. Again, we are looking at the opposite direction from the last plate. We are starting to see more clouds in the cloud camera. Finished in 3 exposures. I have to change cartridge ONE MORE TIME. Cart 9 Plate 1692 ------------------- When gotoField was issued, TCC scrolled with TONS of message. (not easy to read when it scrolls at the speed of light) In the TCC log, 10:56:31 is when we see the track command from the gotoField and the next line is a complain about EText="unrecognized command verb - check validity and spelling" I have gotten the TCC log relevant to this time (please help us find out what happened) at ank@sdsshost:bummer.log The tccmon did not show where it is suppose to go to with the high lighted columns as it normally does. Anyway, we tried to "axis stop" and re-gotoField. But it did not seem to help. So he put the stop button in, reissued "axis init" and then another "gotoField". This seems fixed things and we were ok again. During this time, we also saw az correction too large error message after the first gotoField, but not after the gotoField that took the telescope to the field. azimuth (correction for azimuth 391705 is too large (2005-04-12 10:56:56Z sdssmcp): 2005-04-12 10:57:35Z ) I know the above seems very sketchy and wierd. Please see the TCC log in the problem section to see what happened. We did three exposures blindly --- did not do any calibs before we started taking the science exposures. We were trying to finish this plate before the sky is too bright. The 2nd and 3rd exposures are taken in twilight. We took postCalib and then had SoS reduce the exposures for this plate to find out how much data we got. The 3rd exposure did not make the s/n^2>=2. The sky was too bright. Oh well. We thought it was worth a try. So the plate is about 1/3 done. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5245 00:03Z 00:17Z 100 O -89.78 -86.15 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31923, plate -9999 ------- 00:02 31923 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31924, plate 1990 ------- 00:07 31924 10.0 flat collimation 00:10 31925 2.0 arc collimation 00:12 31926 2.1 arc collimation 00:15 31927 2.1 arc collimation ----- sequence 31928, plate -9999 ------- 00:26 31928 0.0 bias 00:58 31929 0.0 bias 01:02 31930 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31931, plate 1990 ------- 02:30 31931 10.0 flat 02:37 31932 2.0 arc 03:00 31933 900.1 target 03:18 31934 900.1 target 03:36 31935 900.1 target ----- sequence 31936, plate 1694 ------- 03:50 31936 10.0 flat 03:53 31937 2.0 arc 04:12 31938 900.1 target 04:36 31939 900.1 target 04:51 31940 720.1 target ----- sequence 31941, plate 2005 ------- 05:05 31941 10.0 flat 05:08 31942 2.0 arc 05:27 31943 900.1 target 05:40 31944 600.1 target 05:53 31945 600.1 target ----- sequence 31946, plate 1626 ------- 06:06 31946 10.0 flat 06:09 31947 2.0 arc 06:25 31948 720.1 target 06:39 31949 660.1 target 06:53 31950 660.1 target ----- sequence 31951, plate 2105 ------- 07:04 31951 10.0 flat 07:08 31952 2.0 arc 07:23 31953 720.2 target 07:36 31954 600.1 target 07:49 31955 600.1 target ----- sequence 31956, plate 1971 ------- 08:00 31956 10.0 flat 08:03 31957 2.0 arc 08:17 31958 600.1 target 08:32 31959 720.1 target 08:47 31960 720.2 target ----- sequence 31961, plate 1686 ------- 09:01 31961 10.0 flat 09:04 31962 2.0 arc 09:20 31963 720.1 target 09:33 31964 600.1 target 09:46 31965 660.1 target ----- sequence 31966, plate 1840 ------- 10:01 31966 10.0 flat 10:04 31967 2.0 arc 10:18 31968 660.1 target 10:33 31969 720.2 target 10:51 31970 900.1 target ----- sequence 31971, plate 1692 ------- 11:18 31971 600.1 target 11:30 31972 600.1 target 11:43 31973 600.1 target 11:46 31974 10.0 flat 11:49 31975 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:44Z 1 1990 92.83 0.0024 64.47 0.0034 256.79 0.0017 1.000150 04:19Z 3 1694 62.55 0.0006 54.27 0.0047 229.69 0.0134 1.000240 05:18Z 5 2005 112.73 0.0016 65.24 0.0053 -85.08 -0.0088 1.000090 06:26Z 6 1626 -11.38 -0.0018 64.28 0.0035 170.26 -0.0134 1.000090 07:17Z 2 2105 252.63 0.0015 72.52 0.0026 84.44 0.0188 1.000090 08:16Z 4 1971 262.70 0.0011 64.18 0.0028 99.40 -0.0045 1.000090 09:15Z 8 1686 78.50 -0.0003 75.41 0.0054 249.96 0.0128 1.000090 10:06Z 7 1840 259.94 0.0006 64.24 0.0023 96.96 -0.0101 1.000000 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8456 Stays: JL8457 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:44Z 1 1990 1.00015 -1481 16 100 93 64.5 3.5 14 268 gdr 1.0 04:19Z 3 1694 1.00024 -2369 -789 5 63 54.3 3.8 13 268 gdr 1.2 05:18Z 5 2005 1.00009 -889 440 35 113 65.2 3.3 13 270 gdr 1.2 06:26Z 6 1626 1.00009 -889 497 90 -11 64.3 2.8 15 288 gdr 1.2 07:17Z 2 2105 1.00009 -889 481 90 253 72.5 2.9 10 315 gdr 1.1 08:16Z 4 1971 1.00009 -889 427 20 263 64.2 2.6 11 4 gdr 1.1 09:15Z 8 1686 1.00009 -889 398 10 78 75.4 3.0 10 9 gdr 1.0 10:06Z 7 1840 1.00000 0 1152 10 260 64.2 3.2 8 18 gdr 1.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:39Z 41 11 17 270 (W) 907 -
