APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday April 20, 2005 (MJD 53481) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Mike Harvanek (swing support) Steph Snedden (visitor, moral support) The ET Team: Jian Ge (UF) Julian Van Eyken (UF) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Obtained more signal on all four "regular" ET plates (8011-8014) and simultaneous ET data and SDSS spectrograph data on the mixed Plate 8015. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Based on temperatures forecast for tonight, no adjustments to the spectro collimation were made. Numbers are in the Problems section. Steph and the ET crew did tests to see how much the fans affect their data. They did tests with only the extractor fan running, only the cone fans running and both the extractor and cone fans running. No problems to report. Night: ------ Open at 01:40Z. 02:16Z Cart 5, Plate 8012. No guide stars on gotoField w/ last night's offsets still in place. Cleared the offsets and found the stars on a gotoField, with additional offsets of A=+2, D=+4 to rough-center before letting the guider take over. Disabled fibers 8 and 11 again for guiding. Best focus was moderately high -- around 225 -- and seeing steady near 1.2 arcsec. Got signal on this plate over about 2 1/2 hours. 05:15Z Cart 6 Plate 8011. No guide stars on gotoField with offsets from the last plate still sticky. Cleared the offsets and got a glow in guide fiber 4 only. I centered that star with a D=+5 offset and then tried rotateAboutFiber both directions by dRot=100 but got no other stars, so I assumed this must be a random field star that wandered into the fiber. An fk5InFiber number 10 showed nothing, so it was back to spiralPattern. Once again, spiralPattern quit about 10 moves in with the usual error message about the guider image not arriving at the expected time. I changed the offset to 10 arcseconds on each move and found the fk5 star at an offset of A=+10, D=-10. Additional manual offsets of A=+2 and D=-5 were needed to center the star. Back to the field and started a focus loop centered on +250, the best focus value from the previous plate. The loop, too, quit with the error of a guider image arriving other than on-time. Mike suggested I do a new gotoField -gflat before trying the focus loop again, as that sometimes helps. After taking a new gflat, the second attempt at the focus loop worked. Best focus was now down to +145, and seeeing still at about 1.3 arcsec. Did science here for a little over 2 hours. 07:39Z Cart 8 Plate 8013. No GSOGTF with the last plate's offsets. Followed the same procedure as before (clear offsets and try again, fk5InFiber number 10) without luck. spiralPattern located the fk5 star at A=-10, D=+20; additional manual offsetting of A=+3, D=-2 centered the star. I ran a new focus loop which put best focus at about +225. Seeing remained at 1.3 arcsec. Science here for almost 2 hours. 09:40Z Cart 4 Plate 8014. No GSOGTF with the offsets from the last plate. I cleared those and tried last night's offsets for the same plate of A=-15 and D=-16. It worked! Additional offsets of A=+2, D=-5 centered the stars. Focus looks okay so I did not run a new loop. Seeing ws still about 1.3 arcsec. We were here only for about 45 minutes. 10:44Z Cart 9, Plate 8015. Immediately after gotoField I cleared the previous plate's offsets and plugged in last night's offsets for this plate (A=-16, D=-7) and found guide stars immediately. Focus seemed okay but the seeing was worse on account of higer winds than earlier. Again I took spectra with the SDSS spectrographs while ET data were taken simultaneously. We continued working until the sky became too bright to guide the telescope. Closed up at 12:20Z endNight was run on the cloudy night tapes and rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): n/a UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32162, plate -9999 ------- 00:01 32162 0.0 bias 00:09 32163 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32164, plate 8015 ------- 00:19 32164 10.0 flat collimation check 00:22 32165 2.0 arc collimation check 00:25 32166 2.1 arc collimation check 00:27 32167 2.1 arc collimation check 11:01 32168 60.1 target 11:05 32169 60.1 target 11:12 32170 30.1 target 11:17 32171 30.1 target 11:23 32172 60.1 target 11:27 32173 60.1 target 11:37 32174 60.1 target 11:47 32175 60.1 target 11:53 32176 30.1 target 11:58 32177 10.0 flat 12:01 32178 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:48Z 5 8012 -65.43 0.0051 78.61 0.0038 120.35 0.0039 1.000240 05:41Z 6 8011 215.32 0.0031 58.34 0.0049 58.27 -0.0008 1.000240 07:58Z 8 8013 -4.07 -0.0034 56.60 0.0050 176.45 0.0000 1.000120 11:01Z 9 8015 131.36 -0.0008 69.62 0.0070 -62.34 0.0061 1.000300 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:49Z 5 8012 1.00024 -2369 -617 225 -66 78.6 8.6 18 272 -- 1.2 05:42Z 6 8011 1.00024 -2369 -660 145 215 58.3 8.3 11 273 -- 1.3 07:59Z 8 8013 1.00012 -1185 405 225 -4 56.6 7.6 16 304 -- 1.3 11:01Z 9 8015 1.00030 -2961 -1050 270 131 69.6 5.8 18 292 -- 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:55Z 54 7 18 245 (WSW) 1880 - 01:39Z 48 3 17 252 (WSW) 1529 - clear 02:09Z 47 3 15 267 (W) 1608 - 02:31Z 47 4 10 267 (W) 1644 - 03:04Z 47 4 11 266 (W) 1671 - 03:36Z 47 3 7 264 (W) 1699 - clear 04:09Z 46 3 10 279 (W) 1699 - 04:41Z 47 2 11 285 (WNW) 1767 - 05:11Z 47 2 11 276 (W) 1817 - 05:41Z 47 1 9 275 (W) 1993 - 06:12Z 46 2 13 270 (W) 1962 - 06:42Z 46 4 17 274 (W) 1933 - 07:13Z 45 4 15 290 (WNW) 2116 - 07:46Z 45 3 16 289 (WNW) 2083 - 08:19Z 45 3 22 296 (WNW) 2160 - 08:51Z 45 2 21 302 (WNW) 2100 - 09:25Z 44 2 21 295 (WNW) 2092 - 09:55Z 44 4 14 299 (WNW) 2069 - 10:28Z 44 4 26 291 (WNW) 2205 - 11:00Z 42 2 15 276 (W) 2064 - 11:32Z 42 3 17 296 (WNW) 2063 - 12:04Z 43 4 16 278 (W) 2015 - 12:37Z 42 4 15 295 (WNW) 1963 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:06Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on (yes), louvers opened. 01:45Z Enclosure off. 12:20Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, spectro dewars force-filled Telescope is parked at 121,30 with Cart 9 (Plate 8015) mounted Spectro autofill reconnected Counterweights at 270 No interlocks bypassed.
