APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday May 11, 2005 (MJD 53502) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: John Barentine Mike Harvanek Support: French Leger Visitors: Christopher Willmer Suzanne Hawley Steph Snedden Howard Brewington Jurek Krzesinksi Curtis Dewitt ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished 2 plates (1700, 1769). Imaged 17 N from lambda +24.3 to +63.5. The PT ccd temp remained in spec for all but the last 20 - 30 minutes of this run (5322). See the PT log for details. Imaged 20 S from lambda +41.6 to +65.5. The last 25 frames (4 degrees of lambda) were obtained after twilight officially began (i.e., we ran about 15 minutes past start of 18 degree twilight). The PT ccd temp was out of spec for this entire run. See the PT log for details. Dust was a little high at the beginning of the night (2500) but it slowly dropped and was not a problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectrograph focus checked and found to be right on for the enclosure/pmss temperatures at the time or around 11 C. Since this is expected to be within a few degrees of the overnight low, no changes were made. There was a glitch with id4 when loading the tapes which resulted in the SCSI connection between id4 and its drives going down. archInit was not sufficient to recover control of the drives, so photo2 was rebooted. All was well after that. A test bias was archived successfully. No other problems besides PT dewar vacuum and too much dust in the air. Night: ------ 01:45Z Dust down below 300 and heading lower Starting Enclosure ventilation - Doors Open, Fans On Around sunset the dust rose again so we waited to see what it was going to do. It dropped back down after about 30 minutes and we pulled the building around 02:45Z. Photometric but the moon is up so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1700 (cartridge 3): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. Guide stars were lost shortly after the application of a large scale change (0.033). An FK5 was needed to acquire the field again. Finished in 3 exposures (3300 sec total). The call for a postCal came too late. Plate 1769 (cartridge 5): Survey. Guide stars on the edge of fibers on the gotoField. Finished in 3 exposures (2700 sec total). SoS issued a single max sky residual warning. We switch to imaging. Run 5322: 17 N, start lambda +24.3. Everything good from the beginning. Mike could not run skippy from astrom. John could. Mike added group write permission to skippy.log and was then allowed to run it. Everything was good from beginning to end (frame 10 to 272, lambda +24.3 to +63.5). The PT ccd temp was in spec for all but the last 20 - 30 minutes of this run. See the PT log for details. Run 5323: 20 S, start lambda +41.6. Everything good from the beginning. Twilight officially began at frame 145, lambda +61.8. Everything was good from beginning to end (frame 10 to 170, lambda +41.6 to +65.6). The PT ccd temp was out of spec for this entire run. Run 5324: On-telescope bias. Dust hung around 2000 counts for most of the night but was not a problem. We had problems when stowing the telescope. Around 11:10Z we were bringing the telescope down to 6 degrees. At around 17-18 degrees, the telescope suddenly halted. We checked for a slip first but found nothing. After checking a variety of other things (15 degree stop, lift, cycling power on the amps, multiple axis inits) John discovered that alt 2 had indeed slipped. A slip reset got the telescope moving again. It's odd that the slip detection light did not go out initially though. Then, when bringing the telescope back up again, the telescope stopped at 17-18 degrees again. We checked for a slip, found nothing but hit the reset anyway. Immediately after issuing an axis init we heard a loud clunking sound that both John and I believed had come from the lower enclosure. We investigated but found nothing. We did another axis init and heard another clunking sound. This time we believed it came from the 15 degree stop. It is possible the first clunk also came from the 15 degree stop but we both thought it came from downstairs. The 2nd axis init got the telescope moving again and things appeared normal after that. French was notified of this problem in detail. He examined the 15 degree stop and found it to be operating roughly. He will continue to investigate. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
