APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday May 13, 2005 (MJD 53504) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Atsuko Nitta Jurek Krzesinski Jon Brinkman by phone. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Plates done: 1825,1828,1710. imaging done: stripe 19,N lambda 44.8 - 64 including the ramps. Very bad seeing on the ramp from 62.3 up. Problems: --------- We managed to confuse mechanicals on sp1, while changing exposure time: instead increasing it to 1500s, we shortened it to 150s (typo). Solving that problem took 40 minutes of science time. Imager LN2 dewar was replaced. Both spectro and imager dewars will be fine till we show up again on the site :). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems with the afternoon check. Spectrograph focus checked but not changed. Still set for about 11C. Night: ------ 00:30Z Doors Open, Exhaust (but not cone) Fans On Telescope between 6 and 8 C cooler than outside ambient and it doesn't look like it will cool off that much by sunset, so ventilation started a little earlier than usual. 01:30Z Cone Fans On. 02:30Z cart 1 plt. 1825. Fk5 used because it was too bright. Plate Done. 04:37Z cart 2 plt. 1828. SOGTF. Plate done. SOS warnings: bad,max sky residuals. 05:51Z cart 5 plt. 1710. SOGTF. Plate done. Seeing good for imaging. 07:00Z Imager mounted. 07:13Z Run 5330, stripe 19, N. Lambda 44.8 frame 24, the ramp starts. Skippy ok., in focus seeing very good. The wind brought us bad seeing at the end of our run. So the last 1.5 degree of the ramp is bad: frame 141, lambda 62.3 the seeing went to the roof. Dimm seeing plot confirms that. The ramp ends at frame 152, lambda 64 in very bad seeing conditions. 08:34Z We set the telescope for another stripe: 39,N (run 5331) and watched the seeing. We also run skippy to see if we were pointing where we should have. Skippy was fine. Seeing still bad. We ended the drift and while waiting for the mirrors to follow the sudden temperature drop we took bias on the telescope. Run 5331 - ignore. Run 5332 - bias on the telescope. 09:03Z The seeing seems to get bettter (on dimm). We ended the bias drift and started another drift at the current telescope position just to see if the seeing indeed get better. Run 5333 test drift. What we saw were just blured stars and at the same time dimm seeing again went up. We gave up. Run 5333 - ignore. 09:09Z Spectroscopy again. 09:21Z Cart 8 plt. 1851. SOGTF. Seeing bad 2.6". While changing exposure time instead of increasing it to 1500s we made a typo and decreased it down to 150s. That made mechanicals to stop responding. Then after scheduled 720s of exposing the frame was read out but the exposure time sos reported was 2.1 s. The exposure got s/2 < 2 and we declared it bad. We issued mechSend s - all machanicals seemed to respond well, but when we tried goStare it failed complaining: ---------------------------------------------- Issuing goStare science with 1500 exposure 2005-05-14 10:08:22Z: There is an aborted exposure on sp1. sp1 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 sp2 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 Flushing charge for 15 sec mcpPut: SYSTEM.STATUS 2005-05-14 10:09:06Z: Original command was !e1500! 2005-05-14 10:09:06Z: expected reply was !e1500 OK ! Mechanicals did not respond correctly; response was e1500 failed: { already exposing } goStare was not successful, trying again Mechanicals did not respond correctly; response was e1500 failed: { already exposing } ------------------------------------------------- Also we couldnd't drop instruments. Hmmm - maybe sos was confused? We did exit from the sop window and tried goStare on the coopilot computer. No, the error message was the same as above. We issued andother mechSend s and this time noticed that the shuter open and closed sensors were both off on the sp1: sp1> mechSend s spMechVersion v2_5_0 Bootup 719771169 SpectroID 1 SlitID 40 Air On Shutter_open_sensor Off Shutter_closed_sensor Off Left_open_sensor On Left_closed_sensor Off Right_open_sensor Off Right_closed_sensor On So we rebooted mechanicals on sp1 hopping that that will clear the problem. Unfortunately it didn't. We called Joh B. He asked us to check if the presure is fine? it was, if there is any hissing sound (air leak)? there wasn't, so we rebooted mechanicals again and ... this time shutter sensors were set properly: sp1> mechSend s spMechVersion v2_5_0 Bootup 719771169 SpectroID 1 SlitID 40 Air On Shutter_open_sensor Off Shutter_closed_sensor On Left_open_sensor Off Left_closed_sensor On Right_open_sensor Off Right_closed_sensor On We started sucessfuly the exposure, but the seeing was terrible and the efficiency marginal. The exposure was read out properly, but s/n was <2, so it was declared as a bad one. We lost about 1 hour science time due to the problem, well the last 20 minutes were in twilight with very bad seeing conditions. endNight is running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5329 22:31Z 22:51Z 100 O -81.15 -76.33 46 ignore 5330 07:04Z 08:31Z 19 N 42.37 64.21 160 science 5331 08:34Z 08:48Z 39 N 21.19 24.62 37 ignore 5332 08:49Z 09:04Z 100 O 73.78 77.47 39 bias 5333 09:06Z 09:08Z 39 N 29.06 29.77 19 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 5330, stripe 19, N.
