APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday July 3, 2005 (MJD 53555) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Partly cloudy and non-photometric for all but the last ~2 hours of the night. Finished three plates (1652, 2179, 2197) and obtained signal on two others (1799, 1917). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- No issues during checkout. Spectro focus appears to be good (all SoS values are in spec) so we made no changes. Night ----- The temperature of the telescope was several degrees below ambient in the late afternoon so we did not actively ventilate during afternoon or twilight. We opened shortly after sunset with enough clouds in the sky to preclude beginning with imaging. 03:13Z Cart 7 Plate 1799 (tile 1340, chunk94). No GSOGTF, nor an fk5InFiber number 10. We tried multiple laps of spiralPattern with a 5 arcsec offset and found the fk5 star on the third lap. Pointing is okay for now but we suspect that we'll be doing this again as soon as we get to a SEGUE plate. This plate expires uncomfortably close to the end of twilight but we did manage to get three exposures on it, not quite enough (S/N)^2 to call it done. SoS asked for, and we gave it, a postCalib. Speaking of when plates expire, several of the available plates mounted on the cartridges are bunched up in time at the beginning of the night leaving us with little to fill the second half. We're going to try to rearrange this in our plugging request for tomorrow. 04:45Z Cart 4 Plate 1652 (tile 1164, chunk92). GSOGTF. Finished this plate in three exposures of 900 s each. The low (S/N)^2 value is 14.6 in r2 but the others are solidly above 15 so we call this plate done. 06:00Z Cart 3 Plate 2197 (tile 1581, chunk115). No GSOGTF but we found an fk5InFiber number 10. We also note that another bright field star randomly showed up in guider Fiber 11 at the same time! Done in three exposures of 900 s and 2 x 1200 s, respectively. SoS asked for and got a postCalib. 07:30Z Cart 5 Plate 2179 (segue117). GSOGTF but we noted a serious focus gradient across the plate. While most other guidestars were in focus, those in Fibers 9 and 10 were definite donuts. Mounting the cartridge went normally so we did not immediately suspect a mounting problem. To check whether we had somehow gone far from focus we did a proper focus sweep. The sweep had a noticeable minimum at -200 but the scatter in the points was large. Fibers 9 and 10 were still out of focus so we disabled them for guiding and pledged to be vigilant about looking for SoS warnings, though none were issued. Around this time the wind had come to a near-standstill and seeing took a dive, yet we finished the plate in a combination of 2 x 1200 s and one 900 s exposure. 08:55Z Cart 9 Plate 1917 (seguefaint98). No GSOGTF but we located an FK5 star with fk5InFiber number 10. We obtained three exposures on this plate at 1200 s each and one at 1080 s (in order to avoid going too far into twilight) which didn't quite get us to the (S/N)^2 requirement to call it done. SoS again wanted a postCalib on this plate. We were agreeable to that suggestion, then called it a night. Closed up at 10:50Z. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33203, plate 1799 ------- 13.2 12.5 15.5 15.2 03:35 33203 10.0 flat 03:38 33204 2.0 arc 03:58 33205 900.1 target 04:16 33206 900.1 target 04:34 33207 900.1 target 04:37 33208 10.0 flat 04:39 33209 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33210, plate 1652 ------- 17.8 18.6 18.7 14.6 DONE 04:54 33210 10.0 flat 04:57 33211 2.0 arc 05:16 33212 900.1 target 05:34 33213 900.1 target 05:52 33214 900.1 target ----- sequence 33215, plate 2197 ------- 17.2 18.2 19.9 16.2 DONE 06:07 33215 10.0 flat 06:10 33216 2.0 arc 06:29 33217 900.1 target 06:52 33218 1200.1 target 07:17 33219 1200.1 target 07:20 33220 10.0 flat 07:22 33221 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33222, plate 2179 ------- 17.1 17.7 22.9 12.7 DONE 07:39 33222 10.0 flat 07:42 33223 2.0 arc 08:07 33224 1200.1 target 08:30 33225 1200.1 target 08:48 33226 900.1 target ----- sequence 33227, plate 1917 ------- 38.6 35.9 38.6 37.6 09:04 33227 10.0 flat 09:06 33228 2.0 arc 09:30 33229 1200.1 target 09:53 33230 1200.1 target 10:16 33231 1200.1 target 10:37 33232 1080.1 target 10:40 33233 10.0 flat 10:43 33234 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:47Z 7 1799 -56.16 0.0023 50.87 0.0066 135.15 -0.0080 1.000210 05:04Z 4 1652 277.83 0.0091 73.32 0.0074 107.52 0.0095 1.000240 06:17Z 3 2197 295.22 0.0048 58.62 0.0069 127.58 0.0098 1.000240 07:49Z 5 2179 174.16 0.0054 45.84 0.0086 -21.13 -0.0240 1.000220 09:14Z 9 1917 -5.81 0.0016 51.09 0.0071 174.98 0.0032 1.000390 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8732 Stays: JL8733 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:47Z 7 1799 1.00021 -2073 -864 -325 -56 50.9 20.1 18 228 -- 1.2 05:03Z 4 1652 1.00024 -2369 -1036 -200 278 73.4 19.1 7 266 -- 1.5 06:17Z 3 2197 1.00024 -2369 -981 -175 295 58.6 18.6 5 277 -- 1.5 07:49Z 5 2179 1.00022 -2171 -803 -200 174 45.8 19.3 6 15 -- 2.0 09:14Z 9 1917 1.00039 -3850 -2210 -200 -6 51.1 19.1 6 30 -- 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 03:08Z 69 23 12 263 (W) 662 - PtlyCldy 03:41Z 68 23 12 253 (WSW) 591 - PtlyCldy 04:12Z 67 23 14 252 (WSW) 646 - PtlyCldy 04:44Z 67 23 9 244 (WSW) 627 - PtlyCldy 05:14Z 66 23 10 270 (W) 617 - PtlyCldy 05:48Z 65 23 10 264 (W) 710 - PtlyCldy 06:19Z 65 24 6 269 (W) 856 - PtlyCldy 06:51Z 65 24 2 271 (W) 1130 - MstlyClr 07:23Z 65 23 4 13 (NNE) 1005 - MstlyClr 07:55Z 66 18 4 12 (NNE) 658 - MstlyClr 08:28Z 66 16 5 15 (NNE) 597 - MstlyClr 08:59Z 66 15 17 8 (N) 547 - Clear 09:29Z 65 14 11 15 (NNE) 439 - Clear 10:02Z 65 15 7 354 (NNW) 499 - Clear 10:34Z 64 15 15 18 (NNE) 538 - Clear 11:06Z 63 15 21 9 (N) 638 - Clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:30Z Enclosure off, blowers and fans on, louvers open 10:50Z Enclosure on, fans off, louvers closed, spectro dewars force-filled Telescope stowed at 121,30 with Cart 9 (Plate 1917) mounted Counterweights at 250 Spectro autofill reconnected No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 11:15Z Imager: 286lbs 25psi Spectro: 141lbs 15psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_149_0 Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v2_02 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5500 0.5770 Axial B 0.5920 0.5880 Axial C 0.9850 0.9460 Trans D -8.1810 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0330 10.0330 Lateral F 11.5951 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
