APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday January 20, 2006 (MJD 53756) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pan Night: E. Malanushenko, Brewington Steph Snedden (phone) Eric Neilsen (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds and poor seeing for much of the night. We had to replace a FF-lamp in the 2.5-meter. The spectro guider had problems again tonight. We had an az abort while slewing to the field of cart 08; see log. The DIMM lost the north star after a few hours of operation. Completed cart 01, plate 2377 and are waiting for a reply from Brian about its status. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- afternoon: ----------- Frames 36537 and 36538 were bad postcalib with lights on in the enclosure. Sos cloud not reduced them. Spectrograph focus checked and adjusted for the slightly colder conditions. Now set for around -3 C. As usual details in problem section. Cartridge 1 was mounted on telescope. Night: ----------- 01:00Z Cart 01, plate 2377 (segcluster132). Guide stars on goToField. We started the first exposure about five-minutes before twilight ended. We did four two-minute and four three-minute exposures. We sent an e-mail to Brian about the progress of this plate. We wait for his response. 02:30Z Cart 08, plate 1640 (orion). We lost a little time on this field because the wrong cartridge was mounted. Next, we had a guider problem. As last night, the guider was, at times, difficult to start, i.e., the guider sometimes would not take an exposure, or the guider would take only one exposure and then stop. We did a gGuide off, which seemed to fix the problem. Next, we had a FF-lamp to die. We mounted the spare FF-lamp assembly from the engineering trailer; however, this lamp was also bad. So, we had to mount a new lamp inside the assembly and then mount the assembly inside the 2.5-meter. This restored the lamp's operation. Next, we had an abort in az when we tried to go to field. We went to the scope and did an axis init/track command and discovered that the scope would slew to the south from the az position of 121-degrees, yet the scope would not slew to the north from 121-degrees. In other words, it aborted at ~125-degrees. Although we check for an az slip, outside temp being too low, and other obvious things, we could not find a problem. Finally, we noticed that the az axis had an error too large to correct; see error message below. We were not sure if this problem would cause an az abort, but we forced a fiducial, which made the az axis happy again. By this time, a higher priority plate was available, so we moved on to cart 06. 2006-01-21 05:09:39Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction -726 to azimuth 2006-01-21 05:09:39Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_E_trcErr correction for azimuth -726 is too large 05:25Z Cart 06, plate 2316 (segue). Field was found with Fk5 after clearing offsets. We completed three exposures but could not declare this plate done. 07:08Z Cart 03, plate 2346 (segue126). Guide stars on goToField. But, we had clouds, and the seeing deteriorated to about 3" So, our efficiency was very low. Conditions later improved, and we were able to capture some data before clouds increased again. 12:30Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off. endNight finished and was happy although we had to call Eric for help.
