APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday January 31, 2006 (MJD 53767) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: K. Pan Night: S. Snedden, E. Malanushenko, V. Malanushenko Support: Craig Loomis Jon Brinkmann French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds and snow flurries kept us closed for much of the night. One plate done (2246), which was one more than I thought the weather would let us do. Problem with the MUX in the computer room. Resolved, but we may not have any spare receivers left. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: Spectrograph focus checked. The best focus temp is around 2 C. As usual, details in problem section. 23:00Z Fans on, louvers and east door open, west door cracked. Night: ----- We delayed opening to allow a band of clouds with virga developing to pass. We opened about 01:00Z for spectroscopy. On the slew to the field, we failed to get a guider flat to display on saoMon. After a little flailing, we called in the support troops. In short, Jon, Craig and French found a sync loss at the MUX in the computer room and traced it to a a failure in that MUX. Details in the problems section. About 30 min of science time lost, although the problem took longer than that to fix. Bad weather had moved in in the meantime. We then waited a long time for clouds and snow flurries to pass. 10:03Z Finally, it was safe to open. Because there were still clouds nearby and the seeing looked poor, we decided to go with spectroscopy. 10:19Z Cartridge 2, plate 2246 - Legacy Needed an FK5 to find the field. Seeing was pretty bad - FWHM >= 2", but the clouds cleared out. Efficiency took a hit with the poor seeing. Finished the plate with a total exposure time of 5100 s. After this plate, we were only a few minutes from twilight, so we closed. endNight failed at the ircam copy stage from Elena's account. There's more ssh setup she needs to do. ircam images were manually copied to /data/mt/53767/ircam. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6007 22:22Z 22:40Z 100 O -184.19 -179.69 44 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 36925, plate 2398 ------- 22:23 36925 10.0 flat 22:26 36926 2.0 arc focus check 22:29 36927 2.1 arc " 22:31 36928 2.1 arc " 22:46 36929 2.1 arc " 22:49 36930 2.1 arc " 22:58 36931 10.0 flat 23:01 36932 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36933, plate -9999 ------- 00:01 36933 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36934, plate 2398 ------- 01:06 36934 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36935, plate -9999 ------- 01:45 36935 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36936, plate 2246 ------- 10:07 36936 0.0 bias 10:27 36937 10.0 flat 10:29 36938 2.0 arc 10:54 36939 1200.1 target 11:17 36940 1200.1 target 11:50 36941 1800.1 target 11:55 36942 10.0 flat 11:58 36943 2.0 arc 12:20 36944 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:45Z 2 2246 71.85 0.0042 72.59 0.0025 242.64 0.0000 1.000100 12:04Z 2 2246 -11.07 0.0042 83.07 0.0025 169.56 0.0000 1.000030 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:44Z 2 2246 1.00010 -988 610 300 72 72.5 -0.4 13 3 - 2.0 12:04Z 2 2246 1.00003 -296 1091 220 -11 83.1 -0.6 12 11 - 2.1 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:23Z 44 15 20 248 (WSW) 461 - pcl 22:53Z 41 15 21 269 (W) 746 - ' 23:25Z 43 16 16 260 (W) 907 - ' 23:58Z 41 15 16 261 (W) 1114 - ' 00:22Z 41 16 14 267 (W) 1092 - ' 00:54Z 40 16 20 274 (W) 1051 - cloudy 01:25Z 40 15 16 265 (W) 1093 - ' 01:56Z 39 14 15 274 (W) 953 - ' 02:27Z 39 12 16 268 (W) 959 - ' 02:59Z 39 14 16 289 (WNW) 861 - ' 03:31Z 38 14 18 297 (WNW) 844 - ' 04:03Z 37 17 18 306 (NW) 846 - ' 04:36Z 37 18 1 315 (NW) 812 - ' 05:08Z 36 18 14 349 (NNW) 722 - ' 05:40Z 35 19 9 18 (NNE) 685 - ' 06:12Z 35 17 0 197 (SSW) 732 - ' 06:44Z 34 18 15 348 (NNW) 763 - ' 07:16Z 33 17 10 293 (WNW) 684 - ' 07:48Z 31 18 9 283 (WNW) 788 - ' 08:21Z 30 18 4 284 (WNW) 803 - ' 08:53Z 30 17 4 34 (NE) 801 - ' 09:25Z 31 17 8 11 (N) 728 - ' 09:56Z 30 17 10 19 (NNE) 690 - pcl 10:27Z 31 16 13 6 (N) 829 - clear 11:13Z 31 15 12 2 (N) 921 - ' 11:45Z 31 13 10 349 (NNW) 690 - ' 12:18Z 30 12 18 11 (N) 576 - ' 12:50Z 30 12 13 35 (NE) 585 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:10Z Fans on, louvers and east door open, west door craked. 01:00Z Opened enclosure. 02:24Z Closed enclosure. 10:04Z Opened enclosure again. 12:45Z Closed enclosure. Of course, we didn't track the problem to it's source right away. After we flailed a bit, then realized that the guider frames were not appearing on sdsshost2, we suspected the guider Mac, but after a reboot and a set inst it was apparent to Craig that no data was getting from the guider to the guider Mac. We reseated the serial connector. Nope. At this time, Jon and French got involved and the sleuthing upstream for where the signal was lost began. They found that the sync loss LED on the MUX in the computer room was on. We could see light from the MUX terminal. Jon started tracing signal loss from the computer room to the lower enclosure MUX, and found only a 4 dB loss. Attention then turned to the receiver itself. A spare receiver MUX was installed in the computer room and the guider Mac rebooted. That turned out to be the problem. We lost 30 minutes of science time to the problem, but really, the weather was deteriorating, so probably no actual science time was lost.
