APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday May 12, 2006 (MJD 53868) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan ET crew: Jian Ge, Scott Fleming visitor: Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A cloudy and good seeing (<=1.5") combination night: We obtained 50-min exposures for seven ET plates: 8024,8026,8021,8022,8027,8028, and 8029. We also tried to acquire a 50-min template exposure for plate 8024. It turned out to be bad. Clouds blocked 20-50% photons. We accumulated 37K dust-hours. I guess nobody will check and clean the mirrors during weekends anyway. Problem: During the slewing process to the field of plate 8028 (cartridge 5), azimuth and alitude brakes came alive, and slewing aborted (see log). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- afternoon: ----------- All applications on laptop in telescope enclosure existed. Has the computer been rebooted? No other problem to report. Night: ------ 02:25Z cart 8, plate 8024. I didn't see stars when I applied offsets from previous night. I went to FK5 and had star there, then sticky offsets and went back to the field, but still did not see stars. kept trying different offsets and got stars. But when I went back and found the final offsets were not big. Was that due to clouds I cloud not see stars in the begining (focus guess -100 was the value guideFocus retured later). Started the first exposure at about 02:45Z. little bit cloudy but seeing was good, 1.0". Dust was about 3.5K. humidity was 21%. At 03:50Z, started a 50-min trial template-exposure. Seeing degraded to 1.4" at the later part of this palte. 04:40Z cart 4, plt 8026. FK5 was used to find the field. one 50-min exposure. still cloudy, dust was 3.4K. Seeing was about 1.4". 05:50Z cart 6, plt 8021. Applying offsets from my previous shift got stars. One 50-min exposure.Seeing was 1.1" and dust 3.4K at the moment exposure started. Seeing degraded to 2.0" after 20 min (due to clouds?). 06:55Z ET mid-calibrations 07:08Z cart 7, plt 8022. stars on GTF. One 50-min exposure. Dust was at 3.4K. During the exposure, seeing was 1.0-1.4". 08:08Z cart 2, plt 8027. stars on GTF. one 50-min exposure. Dust at 3.4K. 09:07Z cart 5, plt 8029. During the slewing to the field, azimuth and altitude bakes came on, and the slewing stopped. Fiducial crossings seems okay. No ideal what happened, an "axis init" and "goto field" got telescope there. Then everything worked fine. 5 minutes lost during the slewing process abortion. 50-min exposure. Seeing was 1.0". Dust at 3.2K. 10:15Z cart 3, plt 8028. stars on GTF. one 50-min exposure. Seeing was 1.3 and dust at 3.2K. Thick clouds came in during the exposure and seeing degraded to 1.9". 11:35Z endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 39152, plate -9999 ------- 00:46 39152 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:14Z 8 8024 -57.15 -0.0043 66.30 0.0036 131.87 -0.0101 1.000280 04:53Z 4 8026 171.50 0.0054 68.79 0.0039 -12.20 0.0208 1.000210 06:02Z 6 8021 82.78 0.0033 68.65 0.0058 250.38 0.0163 1.000180 07:17Z 7 8022 121.25 0.0033 77.85 0.0058 -66.64 0.0163 1.000180 10:05Z 5 8029 111.95 0.0005 81.21 0.0050 -73.85 0.0000 1.000070 10:27Z 3 8028 170.48 0.0005 77.34 0.0050 -11.52 0.0000 1.000160 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:14Z 8 8024 1.00028 -2765 -1250 -100 -57 66.3 15.5 13 207 --- 1.1 04:53Z 4 8026 1.00021 -2074 -633 -50 172 68.8 15.3 11 266 --- 1.4 06:02Z 6 8021 1.00018 -1778 -462 -125 83 68.6 15.3 8 267 --- 1.1 07:17Z 7 8022 1.00018 -1778 -441 -90 121 77.8 14.6 6 279 --- 1.4 10:05Z 5 8029 1.00007 -691 475 -70 112 81.2 14.0 4 353 --- 1.1 10:27Z 3 8028 1.00016 -1580 -262 -75 171 77.3 12.5 8 329 --- 1.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:22Z 67 24 7 237 (WSW) 3057 - cloudy 00:54Z 62 20 9 263 (W) 3080 - cloudy 01:25Z 62 20 6 263 (W) 3422 - cloudy 01:57Z 58 21 5 244 (WSW) 3304 - cloudy 02:29Z 58 21 6 184 (S) 3253 - cloudy 03:01Z 59 21 10 212 (SSW) 3487 - cloudy 03:33Z 58 19 14 214 (SW) 3369 - cloudy 04:06Z 58 16 11 228 (SW) 3442 - cloudy 04:38Z 58 15 7 257 (WSW) 3405 - cloudy 05:10Z 59 14 10 264 (W) 3467 - cloudy 05:42Z 59 14 6 271 (W) 3295 - cloudy 06:14Z 59 15 8 266 (W) 3358 - cloudy 06:44Z 58 14 5 269 (W) 3291 - cloudy 07:16Z 58 14 4 262 (W) 3312 - cloudy 07:48Z 58 14 5 285 (WNW) 3388 - cloudy 08:21Z 58 14 6 345 (NNW) 3316 - cloudy 08:53Z 58 15 7 340 (NNW) 3319 - cloudy 09:25Z 58 14 7 330 (NNW) 3215 - cloudy 09:57Z 57 12 5 289 (WNW) 3314 - cloudy 10:27Z 54 11 7 329 (NNW) 3249 - cloudy 10:57Z 53 11 3 15 (NNE) 3408 - 11:33Z 56 12 13 34 (NE) 3488 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:10Z Doors and louvers opened, fans on 01:35Z Enclosure off. 11:25Z Enclosure on, doors/louvers closed, fans off Telescope at 121,30,00 mount; cart 05 mounted LN2 connected and turned on.
