APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday June 14, 2006 (MJD 53901) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (observer) Jian Ge (ET) Roger Cohen (ET) Dan Long (Spectro Monthly Checkout) Craig Loomis (phone support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We never opened. The night was lost because of clouds and the threat of rain. Dan completed a large portion of the Spectro Monthly Checkout. The mcp became unhappy; but with Craig's help, it smiled again. Our GPS had a problem too; see log. The temperature's setPoint of the enclosure's HVAC system was adjusted; see log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ------------ No problems found during the afternoon checkout. However, the temperature setPoint of the HVAC in the lower enclosure was increased to more closely match the outside temp. Dan started the Spectro Monthly Checkout during the afternoon; see below for results. Checking X-positioning: ----------------------- Looks like both spectrographs need to move X negative a couple of pixels. XMAX in r1 is just into the yellow (limits 2050:2059) Notice scale of spectrograph one is different than the canonical numbers. That is XMIN is below goal, and XMAX is _above_, a simple shift won't get both to match the desired numbers. Note final collimator position after all work is in the collimation section. X-positioning move: sp1> mechMoveColl 200 200 -200 sp2> mechMoveColl 200 200 -200 b1 r1 b2 r2 XMIN (desired) 10 7 2 9 XMAX (desired) 2037 2047 2020 2057 XMIN (before) 5 6 5 13 XMAX (before) 2031 2052 2023 2059 XMIN (after) 3 4 3 11 XMAX (after) 2029 2050 2021 2056 Checking Wavelength Positioning: -------------------------------- The arcs have all the numbers in spec, but sp2 is very close to the high side on wavelength. Will move 4 A blueward to get some breathing room. b1 r1 b2 r2 WAVEMIN (desired) 3792 5770 3793 5790 WAVEMAX (desired) 6151 9225 6166 9240 6165? I expected to see a 4 angstrom shift in the blue and got 8, I expected to see a 8 angstrom shift in the red and got 13. All this from a -400 400 0 move. Since this move was intended to be on the small side, the larger move is still well within spec, so will keep it. Running out of time before sunset, so will check again tomorrow, and tweak if needed. Set for about 17 C. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Night: ---------- 02:10Z Doors cracked, louvers opened, fans on. 03:13Z We had clouds at sunset, so we waited. 04:48Z I noticed that the mcpMenu had become unhappy, i.e., it was stated to be "Unavailable." Although I thought a "mcpResetCrate -hard" would probably correct the problem, I called Craig to see if he had any input or ideas about the mcp. Craig thought that this problem could be related to the GPS time outage earlier tonight, which Russet was able to resolve with Fritz's help. 10:05Z Doors and louvers closed, fans off because of clouds. Misc Watcher messages are posted in the Problems section. endNight finished and was happy ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 00:05 39668 10.0 flat 00:07 39669 2.0 arc 00:28 39670 2.1 arc 00:31 39671 2.1 arc ----- sequence 39670, plate 1813 ------- 00:31 39671 2.1 arc 00:55 39672 0.0 bias 00:57 39674 0.0 bias 01:08 39675 2.1 arc 01:10 39676 2.1 arc ----- sequence 39677, plate 8024 ------- 02:05 39677 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:23Z 75 31 14 228 (SW) 1605 - 23:53Z 76 31 23 211 (SSW) 1605 - 00:24Z 74 30 19 212 (SSW) 1348 - 00:54Z 74 31 22 241 (WSW) 1211 - 01:24Z 73 30 16 205 (SSW) 1228 - 01:54Z 70 27 15 218 (SW) 1323 - 02:24Z 69 26 16 218 (SW) 1572 - 02:54Z 69 25 14 212 (SSW) -9999 - 03:24Z 68 25 14 205 (SSW) 1588 - 03:55Z 68 25 14 188 (S) 1617 - 04:26Z 69 27 14 196 (SSW) 1521 - 04:57Z 69 27 18 194 (SSW) 1441 - 05:27Z 69 27 17 183 (S) 1307 - 05:59Z 68 27 18 179 (S) 1415 - 06:29Z 64 33 24 134 (SE) 1520 - 07:00Z 63 34 22 144 (SE) 1598 - 07:31Z 63 35 17 147 (SSE) 1581 - 08:02Z 65 28 25 172 (S) 1452 - 08:32Z 65 28 13 158 (SSE) 1477 - 09:02Z 64 27 15 172 (S) 1813 - 09:32Z 61 31 21 158 (SSE) 1784 - 10:04Z 62 30 12 154 (SSE) 1510 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:10Z Doors and louvers opened, fans on 10:05Z Doors and louvers closed, fans off Telescope at 121,30,00 mount Ln2 connected and turned on CW at 250lbs; cart 07 mounted Imager 218lbs 17.5psi Spectro 158lbs 25psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v4_24_0b Watcher: v2_34_0 MCP: v6_3_2 TPM: tpm_v3_3_0 AstroDa: v15_12_1 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: SoS: v5_1_4 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A -5.8580 -5.8440 Axial B -5.6850 -5.6770 Axial C 0.9430 0.9420 Trans D -10.0000 -9.9940 Lateral E 10.3505 10.3759 Lateral F 11.9380 11.9380 GALILS Commanded: 4700. -2450. 3000. -7800. 3300. 3000.
