APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday September 28, 2006 (MJD 54007) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Elena Malanushenko Night: Mike Harvanek, Shannon Watters Support: Jon Brinkmann, Rick Kessler, Eric Neilsen Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaged 82 N from +115 to +152 (including ramps) and from +148 to -129 (including ramps). Imaged 1188 N from mu +5 to +26 (including ramps) but seeingRun called the seeing bad at the start and end of the run. Problems with the data transfer to /files. Rick Kessler noticed the problem and knows the details of the problem. Eric Neilsen was called and is also aware of the situation. Steph Snedden also has information about this. This problem eventually involved deleting data not yet stored at FNAL. We still have the data on the sleds so a heads up to John Hendry. We're calling the night photometric except possibly between 09:00 and 10:00Z (supernova). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: ------------------- 01:45 Z. Clear, we think - photometric. T=10.3C, humidity 54%, wind 8 mph, dust around 700 counts. All systems are checked and work fine. Spectro focus has been adjusted for 12 C. Ventilation began around 23:50Z Night: ------ Jon Brinkmann was working on the specMech/eprom stuff at sunset. He finished shortly thereafter and we mounted the imager, closed up the building and did an on-telescope bias (run 6411, 01:30Z). As soon as the bias finished, we removed the enclosure (01:52Z). We started to set up for a supernova drift. However, the tcc timed out and cost us a few minutes. Still we were able to begin science by the end of twilight. 02:14Z Run 6412 82 N, start lambda +115. Pointing and seeing good from the beginning. In focus by frame 26, lambda +118. This run is good from the beginning. This run was ended at frame 253, lambda +152 because we switched to SEGUE imaging. We started to get messages from the watcher about sp2 shutters being off (e.g. 03:14Z). Jon Brinkmann investigated and found both the open and closed sensors for the shutter to be in the off position. He thought this was probably due to the fact that the specMech power had been cycled earlier. He issued a command to close the shutters and all was well. Also from the watcher: tmicro (Disconnected Sensor in M2B2:: 2006-09-29 03:20:58Z) Rick Kessler called around 04:30Z to notify us that some of the dewar directories on /files/photo/fields/54007/6412 were very slow in updating. Some of the directories had not been updated in nearly an hour. Jon Brinkmann was notified. He checked the net traffic and found it to be light. While we were talking, the directories that were the farthest behind began to update. We don't know if this is normal behavior or not. Rick was concerned that some of the directories might get too far behind and that the data might not all be there in the morning. For more details of this problem, please contact Rick Kessler. Rick said that when he's watched it before, it's only been about 10-12 minutes behind and tonight was the worst that he's seen. Eventually, some of the transfers were hours behind. Fritz Stauffer was called but he's on vacation. We called Eric Neilsen and he looked at the problem. It was finally decided that /files being 97% full was the cause. However, Steph Snedden said the disk was full last night too so this may not have been the problem. We tried to free up some disk space using "byebye" but couldn't get it to work. We called Steph Snedden and she told us the workaround for the bug. She started freeing up disk space while we closed the telescope. The data transfer being so far behind may also cause endNight problems so Eric Neilsen will run endNight again after the transfer catches up. To free up enough space on /files, Steph had to delete data that was not yet at FNAL. We still have that data on the sleds though so John Hendry, if your listening, you may have a problem. 04:45Z Run 6413 1188 N, start mu +5. Skippy did not work on this run so we'll just have to assume the pointing is good. In focus by frame 14, mu +6.3. seeingRun called the seeing bad until about frame 49, mu +11.4 but, by-eye, there was really only one bad part (frames 18-24, mu 6.9-7.7). After frame 49, the seeing was good until frame 119, mu +22 when seeingRun called it bad. It remained bad until the end of the run at frame 146, mu +26.0. Gang transfer stopped around 06:03Z. We forced the teamster. 06:11Z Run 6414 82 N, start lambda +148. Seeing, focus, pointing all good from the beginning. Run ended at frame 561, lambda -129. It's all good. endNight rejoiced but Eric Neilsen will run it again just to make sure. We're calling the night photometric except possibly between 09:00 and 10:00Z (supernova). ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
