APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 30, 2006 (MJD 54070) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan ET Crew: Jian Ge Scot Fleming PengCheng Guo Support: Steph Snedden (by phone) French Leger (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The first 6 hours was lost to high wind speed, blowing snows. During the second half of the night, we observed three ETplates: 8033, 8016, and 8017, and got five 50-min exposures and one 30 min exposure. Spectro Dewar needs to be replaced. It just got a fill at 13:45Z. Per Steve request, windbaffle and amplifiers of telescope are left on since they will work on it soon. Problems: (1) MIG numbers for M1 C, D, E, and F are 0, reading sensors are bad? But at about 13:00Z, I noticed the guider imager became fozzy, and at the same time, the Mig numbers of A and B changes. It seems optics really moved (French and Steve are aware of this). (2) Watcher complained about Vs+ of CCD 55. The Vs+ of the chip is extremely stable at 7.05 which is just out of its toerance. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- PT computer was off, Steph and Jon got it back. No other problem. Night: ------ 00:45Z Telescope was ready to go, ET setup and calibration. 02:30Z setup for cartridge 8, 8032. But as soon as ET calibration finished, Wind speed picked up, and started to see some belowing snows at 2.5 m site, and gust wind up to 37. So I decided to close. 02:40Z enclosure on. 02:55Z I noticed that Mig numbers of M1, A to F, were flashing in red (indication of a communication problem). A and B were the same as those I got this afternoon while C, D, E, and F were all zero. the numbers theseselves were stable. French and Steph were called. Per French's instruments via phone, I rebooted Mig, nothing seems changed. According to French, A, B, C, and D are drived by the the samecircuit, E and F by another. So it is hard to understand C, D moved to zero while A, B did not move. So French suspects that this is reading sensor problem. It could be reading sensor for C is bad that gives communication problem so D, E, and F did not got reading. Tomorrow they will investigate this. As Steph's suggestion, I check PMSS pressure and vacuum guages, they are okay. Both Steph and French felt that we are okay as long as the number are stable. later on, when we open, we found that guider stars on the edges of the field are always stay on the edges of their fibers (guider could not center them) while stars in the center of the field are in the center of the fibers. at about 13:00Z, MIG number of A and B changed: A from 24.67 to 22.08, B from 26.26 to 23.67. French and Steve are aware of the situation. 06:30Z By checking on site a few times, I did not see blowing snows. So I decided to open again. 06:40Z cart 1, plt 8033. FK5 used for the field. ET setup and calibration. 07:20Z started an 50-min exposure. Seeing was about 2.0". 08:25Z cart 6, plt 8016. FK5 used to acquiring the field. 08:35Z started 50 min exposure. 08:30Z started a 50 min template exposure. 10:30Z ET calibration. 10:35Z cart 7, plate 8017. Stars on GTF. 10:39Z started a 50 min template exposure. Seeing went worse than 3.0". 11:30Z started another 50 min exposure. 12:24Z started a 30 min science exposure. At about 13:00Z, we saw imagers of guider got fuzzy, I was wonderring what happened. Then I noticed that the MIG number of A and B changed: A from 24.67 to 22.08, B from 26.26 to 23.67. 13:50Z endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:37Z 1 8033 282.10 -0.0060 42.56 0.0054 122.21 0.0091 0.999880 08:53Z 6 8016 6.38 0.0013 56.86 0.0029 185.33 -0.0129 1.000000 10:48Z 7 8017 -29.37 -0.0002 59.32 0.0034 155.53 -0.0104 1.000070 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:35Z 8 0 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 29.9 -8.2 27 24 07:37Z 1 8033 0.99988 1185 2137 -50 282 42.5 0.0 14 31 -- 2.0 08:54Z 6 8016 1.00000 0 1251 90 6 56.9 0.6 6 348 -- 2.0 10:48Z 7 8017 1.00007 -691 682 100 -29 59.3 -1.0 29 20 -- 2.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:00Z 16 -4 11 7 (N) 334 - 00:32Z 16 -10 20 21 (NNE) 263 - 01:04Z 18 -11 16 0 (N) 250 - 01:36Z 17 -9 26 15 (NNE) 182 - 02:08Z 18 -8 18 1 (N) 263 - 02:41Z 19 -9 28 3 (N) 331 - 03:13Z 19 -7 20 8 (N) 241 - 03:45Z 19 -4 14 15 (NNE) 222 - 04:17Z 24 -11 5 35 (NE) 201 - 04:49Z 28 -19 11 334 (NNW) 290 - 05:21Z 29 -26 11 12 (NNE) 343 - 05:53Z 30 0 17 27 (NNE) 120 - 06:24Z 31 2 8 63 (ENE) 86 - 06:55Z 32 1 19 18 (NNE) 72 - 07:26Z 31 0 8 15 (NNE) 138 - 07:58Z 32 1 9 37 (NE) 97 - 08:30Z 33 -1 9 6 (N) 157 - 09:02Z 32 0 10 1 (N) 98 - 09:34Z 32 4 11 356 (NNW) 65 - 10:07Z 30 5 16 11 (N) 136 - 10:39Z 30 7 25 18 (NNE) 148 - 11:11Z 30 5 21 19 (NNE) 146 - 11:43Z 30 5 21 18 (NNE) 122 - 12:15Z 31 5 14 12 (NNE) 117 - 12:47Z 30 0 19 24 (NNE) 101 - 13:19Z 31 3 20 12 (NNE) 79 - 13:50Z 30 8 22 2 (N) 66 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:35 Fans on, louvers open 00:15Z doors open, enclousre off. 02:40Z enclouse on. 06:25Z enclosure off. 13:25Z Enclosure on, doors close, fans off, louvers close. 13:55Z Telscope stowed at 121, 30 with cartridge 7 mounted, counterweight at 260.
