APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday February 20, 2007 (MJD 54152) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Howard Brewington Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- To be Blinded by Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We imaged 1374 N from mu 116.3 to 133 (including ramps). We imaged 1406 N from mu 113.4 to 137.2 (including ramps). We tried to image other stripes as well but the seeing was bad. We finished 3 plates (2548, 2317, 1803) and got good signal on another plate (2568). The spectra from tonight have a "low spot" from 5600 to 6800 A. Perhaps someone should have a look. We caught sp2 doing its short fill cycle this evening. Details are in the log. The night was photometric. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Afternoon check went smoothly. After seeing the message from John Hendry about no fields on 'files1 since 54148, I talked to Fritz and he found frameCatcher had apparently not been running the last four days. Fritz removed the lock file which normally is only present when frameCatcher is running, and it restarted within a minute, making up 4 days worth of catching in 20 minutes. Spectrograph focus checked and adjusted. Set for about -1 C (using the spectro body temperatures). 23:50Z Doors Open, Louvers Open, Fans On Night: ------ 00:55Z Enclosure off. During the beginning of the night spectro fill, the sp2 fill started cycling on and off. It would go off for maybe 15-20 s and then turn on for maybe 2-3 s. Dan came down and did the grounding test which didn't change the behavior (indicating that it is not a grounding problem). Then he wiggled the wires on the solenoid. This altered the behavior as follows: sp2 did a "longer" fill of maybe 15-20 s and then stopped and would not cycle back on. At this point, we switched to a manual fill and sp2 took another 25 pounds indicating that it had not filled at all when in auto mode. sp1 appeared to fill normally on auto-fill. We verified it was full with a manual fill. Both sp1 and sp2 were left on auto-fill. 01:49Z Plate 2548 (cartridge 6): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. The first science exposure was started about 20 minutes before the plate became officially available. SoS did not complain about this frame but we weren't sure if it was good. So we accumulated enough signal on the following exposures to finish this plate without counting the first frame. We obtained 5 exposures (5700 sec total, including the exposure taken before the plate became available). When combined with data from previous nights (54141, 54149), we were able to declare this plate done. The spectra seem to have a "low spot" from about 5600 to 6800 A. Perhaps someone should have a look. We obtained a postCal as requested by SoS. 03:57Z Plate 2317 (cartridge 3): Segue. Guide stars on the gotoField. We finished this plate in 3 exposures (3300 sec total). SoS warned of scattered light, sky residuals and whopping fibers. The call for a postCal came too late. These spectra also had a "low spot" from about 5600 to 6800 A. 05:37Z Run 6727: 1374 N. Seeing and pointing good from the beginning. In focus by frame 17. Science began at frame 38, mu 120. Science ended at frame 112, mu 131. Entire run is good. 06:52Z Run 6728: 1406 N. Everything good from the beginning. Science began at frame 39, mu 118. Science ended at frame 152, mu 135. The entire run was good but the seeing was a bit rocky between frames 148 and 153 (although seeingRun still called it good). 08:33Z Run 6729: 1540 N. Pointing and focus good from the beginning but seeing was not good. We gave up after 57 frames to try another stripe. The time was billed to "other weather problem". 09:03Z Run 6730: 34 N. Pointing and focus good from the beginning but seeing was not good again. We gave up after 24 frames to do the on-telescope bias. The time was billed to "other weather problem". 09:15Z Run 6731: On-telescope bias. Everything looked normal. While taking the bias, the seeing from the DIMM improved so we gave imaging another try. 09:31Z Run 6732: 34 N. The seeing was bad. We gave up and switched back to spectroscopy. The time was billed to "other weather problem". There was an altitude slip (alt 1) around 09:57Z. There was a warning of an altitude windscreen touch in the watcher at 09:57:47Z. The telescope was at 121,90 coming down to 121,30 when it stopped at about 121,57. Winds were gusty (25 mph?) out of the east. The balance was okay. 10:31Z Plate 2568 (cartridge 8): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. We obtained 2 exposures (3300 sec total) before this plate expired. These spectra also had a "low spot" from about 5600 to 6800 A. 11:22Z Plate 1803 (cartridge 7): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with previous data (54150), this plate was finished in two 900 sec exposures. However, there was not enough time to get an exposure on another plate so we obtained a bonus 900 sec exposure on this plate (3 exposures, 2700 sec total). These spectra also had a "low spot" from about 5600 to 6800 A. endNight completed successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
