APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday August 11, 2007 (MJD 54324) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- (Dayshift) Howard Brewington (Observers) Elena Malanushenko Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (support) Dan Long (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake and Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We opened to clear, non-photometric skies but clouds came in soon after. More shake tasks were completed (including a new working pointing model). Around 08:00Z, cartridge 5 (plate 2628) was mounted. -The upper-right FF lamp did not turn on. -There still is a light leak in spectrograph 2. -One science exposure was taken as part of a shake task, but sadly no MC1 or MC2 appeared in the header of the sdR file. At 08:57Z, we recieved a critical alert for ln2_empty sp1. We hooked up the lines and force-filled the dewers until the temperatures for cameras 1 & 4 were back down to normal. The secondary dewers might be having some trouble holding pressure (see log for details and problem section for watcher errors)? Misc watcher errors in problem section. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- I changed the imager dewar. During the imager bias, I noticed that the low-level noise in dewar-one (mostly G-1) had returned today. See run # 6886 frames 42 and 43. This problem disappears when the T-bars are unlatched; however, we still plan to do the imager monthly checkout in the next few days. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ We still have the light leak problem with spectrograph #2; see below: Exposures 45757, 45758, 45761, and 45762 were done with the lights on inside the 2.5-meter enclosure. Whereas, exposures 45759 and 45760 were done with the light off. These exposures were taken after Bob P. came to the site and tried to find/repair the light leak problem. To Bob's credit, the problem does not seem as bad as yesterday. b1 r1 b2 r2 EXPTIME BIAS-00045757 PERCENTILE98 10 10 28 17 0.0 BIAS-00045758 PERCENTILE98 9 9 37 18 0.0 BIAS-00045759 PERCENTILE98 9 9 9 9 0.0 BIAS-00045760 PERCENTILE98 9 9 9 8 0.0 BIAS-00045761 PERCENTILE98 10 9 44 36 0.0 BIAS-00045762 PERCENTILE98 10 9 45 36 0.0 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ No other problems discovered during the afternoon checkout. Other shake tasks completed include the following: I cleared space on sdsshost2:/data with the byebye script. I replaced the battery in the DIMM's reflex finder. I also cleaned its brightness control. I still need to do new guider darks but could not today because the engCam was mounted. I will do new darks on Tuesday afternoon. The spectro focus/collimation was not checked today because the engCam was mounted. Misc Watcher messages are posted in the Problems Section. Night: ----------- 01:15Z - Started ventilation, with doors and louvers open, fans on. 02:10Z - Opened enclosure to clear, but non-photometric skies. 02:57Z - Started setting up telescope pointing model. We ran into trouble with gcam dofind/doread inside TCC when it didnt not return GSDataPix values. This happened even though exposures of the fk5 star were successfully taken and displayed. Steph was contacted about the problem and she solved it by restarting TCC altogether. 04:20Z - The 72-star pointing model program began, but had to be aborted after the first one due to a large fiducial in azmith. We were not able to find the fk5 star until several minutes later. The fiducial had to be corrected and the TCC had to be restarted. 04:46Z - We successfully started the pointing model. Clouds came in. 07:45Z - Pointing model finished, checked, and applied. Results are printed. 07:55Z - Engineering camera removed, cartridge 5 - seguefaint155 plate 2628 mounted. The guider computer had to be rebooted twice. GSFOGTF! We had to do a very large scale change though (0.06). 08:06Z - When we tried to take precals, the upper-right FF lamp did not turn on. We searched the engineering trailer for spare parts but on found the bulbs and not the accompanying assembly. 08:57Z - We received a critical error message saying ln2_empty for sp1 corresponding to cameras 1 & 4. We checked the temperatures and camera 1 was up to -27 degees at a point and camera 4 was up to -56 degrees. We immediately hooked up the lines, force filled the secondary dewers and issued the commands "cc stopfillseq" and "cc startfillseq" repeatedly. Dan Long was called and he said the pressure on the dewer was too low (3psi) when it should be close to ten. At 10:35Z, the pressure on the dewer read 7.5psi and both cameras were almost back to their normal ~-90 degree temperatures. We also noticed that the pressure building steadily declined after a few minutes for the primary specro dewer. 10:45Z - Started 500 second exposure on cartridge 5 in order to check the header and test the new version of iop. Unfortunatly, the sdR file did not show MC1 or MC2 in the header. 11:34Z - endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6886 21:10Z 21:34Z 100 O -13.26 -7.27 54 ignore 6887 00:56Z 01:02Z 100 O 43.37 44.88 24 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): N/A QA Procedures Done (y/n): N/A UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 45757, plate -9999 ------- 20:11 45757 0.0 bias 20:19 45758 0.0 bias 20:34 45759 0.0 bias 20:37 45760 0.0 bias 20:46 45761 0.0 bias 20:51 45762 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45763, plate -9999 ------- 23:04 45763 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45764, plate -9999 ------- 02:25 45764 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45765, plate 2628 ------- 08:14 45765 0.0 bias 09:18 45766 2.0 arc 10:49 45767 501.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 21:16Z engcam 1.00000 0 -2743 0 121 30.0 21.1 11 186 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 18:53Z 64 53 0 258 (WSW) 1525 - Party cloudy 19:25Z 65 52 3 207 (SSW) 1425 - " 19:56Z 65 54 5 189 (S) 1632 - " 20:29Z 68 53 4 181 (S) 1796 - " 20:59Z 69 53 4 182 (S) 1619 - " 21:30Z 71 54 12 198 (SSW) 1416 - " 22:02Z 69 49 11 182 (S) 1353 - " 22:34Z 74 49 15 226 (SW) 1087 - " 23:06Z 70 48 5 183 (S) 1179 - " 23:38Z 67 46 9 189 (S) 1125 - " 00:10Z 68 44 4 165 (SSE) 1109 - " 00:42Z 66 46 10 149 (SSE) 1301 - " 01:19Z 65 47 9 148 (SSE) 1299 - " 01:49Z 65 44 12 141 (SE) 1315 - " 02:20Z 64 45 11 126 (SE) 1304 - " 02:35Z 64 45 11 133 (SE) 1164 - " 03:06Z 65 42 12 132 (SE) 1168 - " 03:38Z 64 42 12 128 (SE) 1221 - " 04:10Z 62 42 11 124 (SE) 1173 - " 04:41Z 62 42 10 114 (ESE) 1260 - " 05:12Z 62 44 13 109 (ESE) 1369 - " 05:43Z 61 44 13 113 (ESE) 1519 - " 06:16Z 62 44 7 89 (E) 1686 - " 06:47Z 61 45 10 110 (ESE) 1700 - " 07:18Z 61 44 7 83 (E) 1759 - " 07:49Z 61 45 9 106 (ESE) 1910 - " 08:19Z 62 44 7 87 (E) 1944 - " 08:51Z 62 44 6 93 (E) 1775 - " 09:21Z 63 44 5 91 (E) 1566 - " 09:51Z 63 44 6 84 (E) 1481 - " 10:24Z 63 44 9 62 (ENE) 1386 - " 10:55Z 62 44 10 70 (ENE) 1458 - " 11:25Z 62 44 11 78 (ENE) 1487 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:15Z - Began ventilation.
