APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 16, 2007 (MJD 54451) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (observer) Dan Oravetz (observer) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We fought with clouds most of the night, but managed to observe some plates. The first part of the night we tried to obtain signal on cartridges 2, 1, and 5, but none of the exposures were good because of the clouds and moon. None of these exposures were used in updating the plate database. We observed cartridge 7 (marvels168) under clear and mostly photometric conditions. What are the criteria for declaring/unplugging marvels plates after observations? In the plugging email we asked for cartridge 7 to be unplugged and plugged with a new plate since we observed it under mostly photometric conditions. Finished cartridge 8. The lock on the Lindy cart shed could not be locked or unlocked, so it's still unlocked. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- All systems checked and working properly. We are running the manipulator arm with the interlocks logic OFF. As of 23:55Z there are 223G available on /data and 313G available on /files. 23:08Z - Began ventilation. Doors and louvers opened, fans on. Night: ------ 00:05Z - Enclosure off. 00:30Z - We had everything set and good to go, but the clouds grew thicker and covered most of the sky, so we delayed starting observations. 02:04Z - A hole in the clouds opened up where we were pointing, so we gave it a try. 02:05Z - Cartridge 2, plate 2848, segue169. ******************************************* Went to an fk5 first because of the clouds and the fk5 was in the fiber. After the fk5 worked, went to the field and had guide stars. 02:14Z - Pre-Calib. 02:23Z - 22-minute exposure. 02:26Z - Efficiency was running < 30% and guide stars were there, but not by much. These conditions continued for most of the exposure. Towards the tail end of the exposure, the efficiency was closer to 50%. Seeing: ~1.5" - 1.8". 02:55Z - Ran goSpecFocus and moved sp1 +2000 steps and sp2 +2500 steps. 03:02Z - Cartridge 1, plate 2824, seguefaint167. ************************************************ Guide stars found on gotoField. 03:18Z - Pre-Calib. 03:25Z - 30-minute exposure. 03:59Z - 30-minute exposure. Thicker clouds and lower efficiency than the prior exposure. Some guide stars went in and out during this exposure. 04:10Z - SOS reported that the first 30-minute exposure (exposure number 47960) had the following (S/N)^2 values: b1: 4.4, r1: 2.1, b2: 5.6, and r2: 5.5. We did not update the plate database with this exposure since these values are relatively poor for a 30-minute exposure. 04:32Z - Post-Calib. Seeing: 1.4" - 1.6". 04:42Z - Cartridge 5, plate 2878, chunk171. ******************************************* We mounted this cartridge (priority 4) in hopes of getting an exposure through a hole in the clouds that appeared to be headed our direction, but the hole never materialized. We went to an fk5 since guide stars could not be found, although this was almost certainly due to the clouds. It took a 10-second exposure to get the fk5, but it was in the fiber. After going back to the field, guide stars could not be found through the clouds. 05:11Z - Cartridge 7, plate 2841, marvels168. ********************************************* We didn't see guide stars on the gotoField and it took a 10-second exposure to get the fk5. We went back to the field and tried a 20-second exposure with the gcam, but still did not find guide stars. 05:24Z - Closed the flat-field screens since we did not find guide stars, but left the telescope pointing at the field in case the clouds thinned out. 05:46Z - Tried to find guide stars again and a 20-second exposure found two. 07:35Z - The sky cleared somewhat and we tried to find guide stars again, but still only managed to find two. 07:41Z - The sky cleared out a bit more and looked to hold for at least a little while, so we took the pre-calib in preparation of starting observations. Exposure Numbers 47966 - 47977 are 10-second exposures. The first two (47966, 47967) might have had cloud coverage, so we took two extras under good conditions. 07:51Z - 10-second exposure. 07:53Z - 10-second exposure. We tried to time the above exposures between cloud patches, but we don't know what degree of cloud coverage we had over the field during the exposures. 07:56Z - 10-second exposure; in the clear. 08:01Z - 10-second exposure; "". 08:03Z - 10-second exposure; "". 08:06Z - 10-second exposure; "". 08:09Z - 10-second exposure; "". 08:12Z - 10-second exposure; "". 08:15Z - 10-second exposure; Cloud camera shows photometric conditions. 08:18Z - 10-second exposure; "". 08:22Z - 10-second exposure; "". 08:26Z - 10-second exposure; "". 08:29Z - Mid-Calib. Exposure numbers 47980 - 47984 are the 20-second exposures. These were taken under photometric conditions. 08:34Z - 20-second exposure. 08:38Z - 20-second exposure. 08:42Z - 20-second exposure. 08:45Z - 20-second exposure. 08:48Z - 20-second exposure. 08:51Z - Post-Calib. 09:02Z - Cartridge 8, plate 2868, seguefaint170. ************************************************ Guide stars found on gotoField. 09:10Z - Pre-Calib. 09:18Z - 25-minute exposure. 09:22Z - Disabled guide fiber 5. It looks like it has fallen below the focal plane a little bit. 09:46Z - 25-minute exposure. 10:14Z - 25-minute exposure. 10:42Z - 30-minute exposure. 11:16Z - Post-Calib. Seeing: 1.5". SOS warned of whopping fibers. 11:27Z - Cartridge 4, plate 2857, segue169. ******************************************* Thick clouds moved in overhead and guide stars were not seen on the gotoField. We tried an fk5 and found it with a 10-second exposure, but still could not find guide stars when going back to the field. 12:15Z - Cloud camera was full of clouds with no signs of clearing up in time for a twilight exposure, so we called it a night. 12:22Z - Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off. 12:29Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7240 21:35Z 22:09Z 100 O 118.13 126.65 68 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 47944, plate 2868 ------- 22:12 47944 10.0 flat 22:15 47945 2.0 arc 22:20 47946 3.0 arc 22:23 47947 3.0 arc 22:34 47948 10.0 flat 22:37 47949 2.0 arc 22:40 47950 3.0 arc 22:43 47951 3.0 arc ----- sequence 47952, plate -9999 ------- 23:52 47952 0.0 bias ----- sequence 47952, plate 2848 ------- 02:17 47953 10.0 flat 02:20 47954 2.0 arc 02:47 47955 1320.0 target 02:50 47956 3.0 arc 02:53 47957 3.0 arc ----- sequence 47958, plate 2824 ------- 03:21 47958 10.0 flat 03:24 47959 2.0 arc 03:58 47960 1802.0 target 04:31 47961 1800.0 target 04:34 47962 10.0 flat 04:37 47963 2.0 arc ----- sequence 47964, plate 2841 ------- 07:44 47964 10.0 flat 07:46 47965 2.0 arc 07:53 47966 10.0 target 07:56 47967 10.0 target 08:00 47968 11.0 target 08:03 47969 11.0 target 08:06 47970 11.0 target 08:09 47971 11.0 target 08:12 47972 11.0 target 08:15 47973 10.0 target 08:18 47974 11.0 target 08:22 47975 11.0 target 08:25 47976 11.0 target 08:28 47977 11.0 target 08:31 47978 10.0 flat 08:33 47979 2.0 arc 08:38 47980 21.0 target 08:41 47981 21.0 target 08:44 47982 21.0 target 08:47 47983 21.0 target 08:51 47984 21.0 target 08:54 47985 10.0 flat 08:56 47986 2.0 arc ----- sequence 47987, plate 2868 ------- 09:13 47987 10.0 flat 09:15 47988 2.0 arc 09:45 47989 1500.0 target 10:13 47990 1500.0 target 10:41 47991 1501.0 target 11:15 47992 1802.0 target 11:19 47993 10.0 flat 11:21 47994 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:25Z 2 2848 -9.76 -0.0013 38.42 0.0019 171.37 0.0206 0.999950 03:27Z 1 2824 271.66 -0.0001 63.26 0.0019 107.49 0.0035 0.999910 08:04Z 7 2841 -32.27 0.0000 59.50 0.0013 153.18 0.0068 0.999980 09:19Z 8 2868 74.62 0.0018 53.63 0.0023 238.30 0.0201 1.000030 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:25Z 2 2848 0.99995 495 1731 100 -10 38.4 2.1 9 4 ---- 1.5" 03:27Z 1 2824 0.99991 889 1980 100 272 63.3 3.1 9 342 ---- 1.6" 03:44Z 1 2824 0.99991 889 1898 10 269 59.7 2.1 8 330 ---- 1.4" 08:04Z 7 2841 0.99998 199 1437 120 -32 59.5 2.2 12 232 ---- 1.5" 09:19Z 8 2868 1.00003 -295 995 70 75 53.6 2.5 11 215 ---- 1.5" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:09Z 38 -7 8 325 (NW) 119 - partly cloudy 22:40Z 37 -9 9 10 (N) 110 - partly cloudy 23:10Z 37 -8 7 10 (N) 124 - partly cloudy 23:54Z 35 -11 15 343 (NNW) 121 - partly cloudy 00:26Z 37 -9 10 314 (NW) 165 - partly cloudy 00:58Z 37 -7 11 339 (NNW) 165 - clouds 01:30Z 37 -8 5 0 (N) 154 - clouds 02:01Z 37 -8 12 352 (NNW) 115 - mostly cloudy 02:32Z 35 -10 8 2 (N) 184 - mostly cloudy 03:03Z 35 -9 3 352 (NNW) 154 - partly cloudy 03:33Z 37 -7 10 335 (NNW) 174 - partly cloudy 04:04Z 36 -7 9 322 (NW) 114 - mostly cloudy 04:35Z 38 -6 9 324 (NW) 119 - clouds 05:05Z 38 -6 8 276 (W) 108 - clouds 05:36Z 38 -6 6 311 (NW) 90 - clouds 06:07Z 37 -7 7 273 (W) 88 - clouds 06:38Z 36 -8 8 251 (WSW) 107 - clouds 07:09Z 35 -8 12 235 (SW) 93 - clouds 07:40Z 36 -7 11 229 (SW) 118 - partly cloudy 08:12Z 35 -9 13 238 (WSW) 97 - clear 08:43Z 36 -9 11 217 (SW) 84 - clear 09:15Z 36 -8 14 218 (SW) 89 - clear 09:46Z 36 -8 14 232 (SW) 97 - clear 10:16Z 35 -10 14 211 (SSW) 117 - mostly clear 10:47Z 34 -10 10 220 (SW) 103 - partly cloudy 11:18Z 34 -8 10 238 (WSW) 192 - partly cloudy 11:49Z 35 4 8 244 (WSW) 197 - clouds 12:21Z 35 7 11 300 (WNW) 168 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:08Z - Began ventilation.
