APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 30, 2007 (MJD 54465) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko (days) Olena Malanushenko (observer) Audrey Simmons (observer) Dan Long (support) Jon Brinkmann (support) Dmitry Bizyaev (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clear and photometric all night. Gained signal on the following plates: Cart 9, plate 2864 Cart 5, plate 2878 - FINISHED Cart 7, plate 2639 - FINISHED Cart 2, plate 1631 Cart 3, plate 1787 - FINISHED Cart 8, plate 2854 Cart 4, plate 2855 We ask that Brian Yanny check the signal on cart 6 plate 2858 and cart 8 plate 2854 and let us know if the plates are finished or not. Thanks. Problems: We planned on imaging stripe 1356 N right after sunset, but during the instrument switch, we were not able to lift the imager on the telescope due to an interlock problem with a saddle latch that was neither in a latched or unlatched position (the red LED light was out on the instrument change panel). We did not know how to fix it at the time, so we decided to proceed with spectroscopy instead. Later on, Dan Long was called, and we were able to fix the problem by gently moving aroud the saddle latches near the power boxes on the rotator. We also had a slight problem with the SOS server. SOS was still working, but the results werent loading onto the website. Jon got it back up and running again. When we closed the DIMM, it was complaining that it was not connected to the CCD. We closed out of the sesson and restarted it in order to adjust the CCD temperature to ambient. It read that both the telescope and the CCD were connected when we shut it down for good. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- All equipment are checked and work properly. Spectro collimation set for -6C. Ventilation is started at 23:15Z. Cart 6 is mounted. Night: ------ 23:50Z - Attempted to mount imager, but had problems raising the lift with the imager on it. Note that we didnt have any problems removing/installing a cartridge, as well as the corrector. The lift raised about 5 inches and stopped. The hand paddle was reading ~1300. We noticed that one of the lights to the saddle latch switch on the instrument changing panel was off. Maybe there is a latch in the way that is setting off an interlock? Since we were having trouble with this and most likely wouldnt be able to fix this hardware problem in time to image most of the stripe, we decided to stick to spectroscopy. 00:20Z - Opened enclosure to clear, photometric skies. Mounted cart 9, seguefaint170 plate 2864. 00:50Z - No GSFOGTF. An fk5 was used, but a small offset needed to be applied (~5 in D) to find it. Since the temperature is currently -1.5C and the collimation is set for -6C tonight, we decided to adjust the collimators by +3000. So, now they are set for a temperature of -3C. 01:12Z - Precals. 01:22Z - 20 min exposure. Note that the seeing from the guider camera was reading about 1.6-1.7", but the DIMM was reading 1.0". 01:44Z - 20 min exposure. 02:08Z - 20 min exposure. 02:32Z - 25 min exposure. 03:00Z - Postcals. We obtained good signal on this plate, but it is not yet done. 03:10Z - Mounted cart 5, chunk171 plate 2878. GSFOGTF. 03:18Z - Precals. 03:26Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.7" 03:54Z - 20 min exposure. This plate has enough signal to be declared DONE. 04:23Z - Mounted cart 7, baotest157 plate 2634. GSFOGTF. Temperature rose slightly, so we mechPistoned the collitmators another +3000. Now they are set for 0C. 04:32Z - Precals. 04:38Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.4". We gained enough signal on this plate for it to be declared DONE. All of the sudden, the SOS reduction server stopped responding. We were able to manually look at the logfile-current in SOS to see our results. Dmitry came in to help. He concluded that the SOS server needed to be rebooted. We called Jon Brinkmann and he restarted SOS as an administrator. 05:21Z - Mounted cart 2, photoz79 plate 1631. GSFOGTF. 05:25Z - Precals. 05:29Z - 20 min exposure. Seeing 1.4" 05:56Z - 20 min exposure. This plate is not yet finished. We called Dan and asked him about the imager problem we were having before. He said that it was an interlock problem (it was neither in the latched or unlatched position) and that we needed to move around the saddle latches (near the power boxes on the rotator). We did just that and it seemed to solve the problem since the saddle latch lights were lit in the unlatched positions, where they should be with a cartridge mounted. 06:15Z - Mounted cart 3, chunk93 plate 1787. GSFOGTF. 06:28Z - Precals. 06:37Z - 20 min exposure. Seeing 1.6" 07:00Z - 20 min exposure. 07:24Z - 25 min exposure. This plate close enough to be declared DONE. Since it is a priority 1 plate, it probably isnt worth getting another exposure on it tomorrow and wasting time. The final values are as follows: 19.0 13.8 20.3 14.8 08:01Z - Mounted cart 8, segue169 plate 2854. Used fk5 to find field. 08:14Z - Precals. Seeing 2.1" 08:21Z - 20 min exposure. 08:44Z - 20 min exposure. 09:07Z - 20 min exposure. 09:30Z - 20 min exposure. Seeing 1.6" 09:56Z - Mid-cals 10:01Z - 15 min exposure. 10:19Z - 15 min exposure. 10:38Z - 15 min exposure. 10:56Z - 15 min exposure. 11:14Z - Postcals. This plate might be done, but we have to wait for verification from Brian Yanny before we will have it unplugged. 11:31Z - Mounted cart 4, segue171 plate 2855. GSFOGTF. 11:40Z - Precals. 11:48Z - 15 min exposure. Seeing 1.5". Note that we just passed a "red zone" in the database for this plate. Therefore, we got watcher messages complaining about high azmith/rotator currents since we were at an altitude roughly 83 degrees. What is a resonable value for these currents? 12:07Z - 15 min exposure. 12:25Z - 20 min exposure. 12:49Z - Postcals. This plate is not finished yet. 13:01Z - Closed enclosure and stopped ventilating. 13:14Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7258 21:48Z 22:10Z 100 O 135.06 140.58 46 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 48435, plate -9999 ------- 21:40 48435 0.0 bias ----- sequence 48436, plate 2858 ------- 22:09 48436 10.0 flat 22:11 48437 2.0 arc 22:14 48438 10.0 flat 22:17 48439 2.0 arc 22:27 48440 3.0 arc 22:29 48441 2.0 arc 22:49 48442 3.0 arc 22:51 48443 3.0 arc ----- sequence 48444, plate -9999 ------- 23:35 48444 0.0 bias 23:38 48445 0.0 bias 23:41 48446 0.0 bias ----- sequence 48447, plate 2864 ------- 01:14 48447 10.0 flat 01:17 48448 2.0 arc 01:44 48449 1200.0 target 02:07 48450 1201.0 target 02:30 48451 1201.0 target 02:59 48452 1500.0 target 03:02 48453 10.0 flat 03:05 48454 2.0 arc ----- sequence 48455, plate 2878 ------- 03:20 48455 10.0 flat 03:23 48456 2.0 arc 03:53 48457 1500.0 target 04:13 48458 1002.0 target ----- sequence 48459, plate 2639 ------- 04:35 48459 10.0 flat 04:37 48460 2.0 arc 05:06 48461 1501.0 target ----- sequence 48462, plate 1631 ------- 05:25 48462 10.0 flat 05:28 48463 2.0 arc 05:52 48464 1200.0 target 06:18 48465 1200.0 target ----- sequence 48466, plate 1787 ------- 06:30 48466 10.0 flat 06:32 48467 2.0 arc 06:59 48468 1201.0 target 07:22 48469 1200.0 target 07:51 48470 1502.0 target ----- sequence 48471, plate 2854 ------- 08:16 48471 10.0 flat 08:19 48472 2.0 arc 08:43 48473 1200.0 target 09:06 48474 1200.0 target 09:30 48475 1200.0 target 09:53 48476 1200.0 target 09:56 48477 10.0 flat 09:59 48478 2.0 arc 10:18 48479 901.0 target 10:37 48480 900.0 target 10:55 48481 900.0 target 11:13 48482 900.0 target 11:17 48483 10.0 flat 11:19 48484 2.0 arc ----- sequence 48485, plate 2855 ------- 11:42 48485 10.0 flat 11:45 48486 2.0 arc 12:05 48487 900.0 target 12:24 48488 901.0 target 12:47 48489 1200.0 target 12:51 48490 10.0 flat 12:53 48491 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:27Z 9 2864 5.32 0.0066 47.40 -0.0019 184.54 0.0361 1.000000 03:38Z 5 2878 -34.60 0.0052 41.14 -0.0023 151.03 -0.0020 0.999960 04:52Z 7 2639 -19.85 0.0066 55.64 -0.0026 163.42 0.0097 0.999840 06:00Z 2 1631 -39.74 0.0066 42.39 -0.0026 147.26 0.0097 1.000040 06:40Z 3 1787 149.91 0.0066 47.78 -0.0025 -67.40 0.0127 1.000060 08:31Z 8 2854 61.62 0.0083 49.52 -0.0011 228.46 0.0288 0.999980 12:11Z 4 2855 -68.30 0.0249 79.72 -0.0018 117.25 0.0598 0.999950 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:27Z 9 2864 1.00000 0 1365 175 5 47.4 -1.2 19 303 - 1.7 03:38Z 5 2878 0.99996 395 1614 75 -35 41.1 0.2 16 308 - 1.7 04:52Z 7 2639 0.99984 1580 2472 0 -20 55.6 1.1 10 331 - 1.4 06:00Z 2 1631 1.00004 -395 880 0 -40 42.4 0.9 17 329 - 1.4 06:40Z 3 1787 1.00006 -593 698 0 150 47.8 1.2 11 344 - 1.6 08:31Z 8 2854 0.99998 198 1446 100 62 49.5 0.5 6 336 - 2.1 12:11Z 4 2855 0.99995 494 1577 50 -68 79.7 0.7 8 347 - 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:47Z 30 10 19 323 (NW) 333 - Clear, photometric 21:19Z 31 11 9 1 (N) 335 - " 21:49Z 32 12 26 318 (NW) 354 - " 22:19Z 32 12 18 329 (NNW) 369 - " 22:50Z 32 12 15 323 (NW) 380 - " 23:21Z 32 12 18 304 (NW) 314 - " 00:08Z 31 11 15 315 (NW) 333 - " 00:40Z 29 11 16 310 (NW) 364 - " 01:11Z 29 14 17 315 (NW) 382 - " 01:41Z 30 15 19 305 (NW) 350 - " 02:12Z 30 15 17 311 (NW) 321 - " 02:43Z 31 15 17 325 (NW) 403 - " 03:14Z 31 15 13 8 (N) 368 - " 03:44Z 31 15 12 338 (NNW) 314 - " 04:14Z 32 13 6 13 (NNE) 322 - " 04:44Z 32 14 13 320 (NW) 261 - " 05:14Z 33 13 21 322 (NW) 228 - " 05:45Z 33 14 17 317 (NW) 247 - " 06:16Z 34 13 12 323 (NW) 227 - " 06:47Z 34 12 14 314 (NW) 258 - " 07:17Z 34 11 13 336 (NNW) 244 - " 07:48Z 34 10 15 329 (NNW) 247 - " 08:18Z 34 9 9 322 (NW) 251 - " 08:48Z 34 8 13 318 (NW) 230 - " 09:18Z 34 8 8 321 (NW) 238 - " 09:48Z 34 7 6 333 (NNW) 265 - " 10:18Z 34 7 12 325 (NW) 307 - " 10:49Z 34 6 6 355 (NNW) 420 - " 11:20Z 32 5 4 17 (NNE) 485 - " 11:50Z 33 2 3 1 (N) 575 - " 12:21Z 33 2 12 354 (NNW) 626 - " 12:54Z 35 -2 11 357 (NNW) 804 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:15Z - Began ventilation.
