APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 1, 2008 (MJD 54711) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (support) Dan Oravetz (support) Paul Harding (guider) Jon Brinkmann (support) French Ledger (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Optical collimation and pointing model ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clear skies finally! We homed/relaxed the mirrors, completed the optical collimation, and mounted the engineering camera on the telescope for a pointing model before we had to close for humidity. We had a problem with the safely latch interlock on the instrument panel which prevented the instrument lift from raising no more than a few inches. We switched over to manual and was able to mount the engineering camera. The guiderMac had trouble talking with the engineering camera. It turned out to be a TCC communication problem. Killing all of the TCC sessions with telstop solved the problem. We had issues with the MCP not allowing us to move the telescope after it fell to 3.5 degrees from 6 degrees. We returned the telescope to stow after we rebooted the MCP. Steph reset the PID values, but asks that Dan Long checks to make sure they are right. Note: The ad2 monitor in the control room is not working. The cloud camera is not functional due to possible hardware issues. Jon was notified. The collimator motor A on spectrograph 2 is showing a weird position of ~-30000, but nothing went wrong with collimating the specrtographs. We had to reset the M2 galil again tonight. The DIMM is back up and running (had to boot up the software), but the CCD is making some weird clicking noises. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 112G 23G 83% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 648G 223G 75% /data sdssfiles1:/data1/data 1.5T 599G 795G 43% /files Spectral collimation set for 11-12C tonight. Night: ------ 00:24Z - Started ventilating with doors and louvers open, fans on. 01:45Z - Opened enclosure to clear skies. 02:01Z - Had to reset the M2 galil again due to the same problem we have had before. There is some communication mix up that prevents us from getting mirror numbers and homing/relaxing the secondary in $ HOST TCC_SEC. 02:15Z - Homed and relaxed the primary and the secondary as part of the optical collimation procedure. The position errors for A, B, and C for the secondary were 120. We did not run into any problems. 02:46Z - Mounted imager and did a test slew. 03:34Z - Collimate mirror: goDrift stripe 82, run #7666, lambda 104, frames 8-157. We adjusted the tilt and translation without any problems. The final shifts are as follows: PrimDesOrient 700 -11.72 8.60 496.70 640.50 The mirror is now collimated. 05:11Z - Relaxed the primary mirror. 05:20Z - goDrift stripe 82, run #7667. We saved the frames at both sides of the focus. Focus was at +700 for frame 29 and at -700 for frame 36. Files can be found within pheonix at /data/photo/optics/54711_donut. 05:45Z - goDrift, run #7668, frame 8-15. Test drift. 06:24Z - Switched to engineering camera to obtain a pointing model. During the mounting of the camera, the instrument lift would not rise further than a few inches, most likely due to an interlock problem. However, there might have been a problem with the safetly latch at the bottom right corner of the instrument change panel since the LED on one was not lit. With the okay from Steph, we switched over the lift to manual and everything worked from there on out. We left the lift on manual until the problem can be fixed. 07:10Z - Once the engineering camera was mounted, we had a problem with the guiderMac not talking with the camera via the TCC. After a thorough inspection of all of the connections and found there was nothing wrong, we tried killing all of the TCC processes with a telstop/telrun. This did the trick. The engineering camera was then set up and all ready to go, when... 07:45Z - Humidity rose over the limit, so we closed. 07:50Z - Right after we put the enlosure back on, an axis init was issued to bring the telescope back up to 30 degrees (from 6), when it fell to about 3.5 degrees. Immediately stop buttons were put in. The commands issued within the MCP had no effect with clearing the altiude brake and we confirmed that there were no slips or amp problems. Steph attempted to override the altitude brake with the handheld panel and bring it up that way, but that failed. At the exact moment we woke up French, the MCP window became unavailable. We did a hard reboot of the MCP downstairs and brought the telescope back up to stow. Afterwards, Steph reset the PID values, be she askes that Dan Long check and make sure she inputed the right values. 10:23Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7665 23:32Z 23:48Z 100 O 43.64 47.72 40 ignore 7666 03:35Z 05:06Z 82 N 104.33 127.02 165 engineering 7667 05:21Z 05:44Z 82 N 130.62 136.42 53 engineering 7668 05:48Z 05:54Z 82 N 135.91 137.26 23 engineering ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7666 11 4 5 -121.200 1.585 -3.400 0.293 1.25971 181 57 7667 7 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7666 22 1 57 359 73 -0.764 0.190 0.417 0.245 -0.00140 7666 22 1 57 359 46 -0.992 0.180 0.545 0.289 -0.00183 7666 22 1 57 359 51 -1.136 0.143 0.658 0.192 -0.00221 7666 22 1 57 359 82 -1.302 0.140 0.582 0.221 -0.00196 7666 22 1 57 359 55 -1.496 0.172 0.619 0.153 -0.00208 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 54451, plate 3106 ------- 23:34 54451 0.0 bias 23:40 54452 10.0 flat 23:43 54453 2.0 arc 23:45 54454 3.0 arc 23:48 54455 3.0 arc ----- sequence 54456, plate -9999 ------- 00:06 54456 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:49Z 62 54 10 300 (WNW) -9999 - Clear 23:21Z 59 48 8 307 (NW) -9999 - " 23:53Z 59 46 6 355 (NNW) -9999 - " 00:25Z 58 43 0 298 (WNW) -9999 - " 00:58Z 57 45 2 342 (NNW) -9999 - " 01:30Z 56 46 4 34 (NE) -9999 - " 02:02Z 55 43 8 78 (ENE) -9999 - " 02:34Z 56 44 10 62 (ENE) -9999 - " 03:06Z 56 44 6 82 (E) -9999 - " 03:38Z 56 42 2 89 (E) -9999 - " 04:10Z 56 41 1 127 (SE) -9999 - " 04:43Z 57 39 2 212 (SSW) -9999 - " 05:13Z 55 47 4 203 (SSW) -9999 - " 05:43Z 55 45 0 256 (WSW) -9999 - " 06:13Z 54 43 1 250 (WSW) -9999 - " 06:44Z 54 48 0 252 (WSW) -9999 - " 07:15Z 54 47 1 243 (WSW) -9999 - " 07:46Z 53 48 2 228 (SW) -9999 - Clear, humid 08:17Z 52 49 2 212 (SSW) -9999 - " 08:48Z 53 48 1 275 (W) -9999 - " 09:18Z 54 47 4 280 (W) -9999 - " 09:49Z 53 50 4 263 (W) -9999 - 10:20Z 53 50 5 294 (WNW) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:25Z - Began ventilation.
