APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday September 24, 2008 (MJD 54734) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Some spectro exposures made in between opening and closing for high humidity, but no plates finished. - Twilight spectra taken - Dithered flats done - Very-sparse plugged plate test done. - Spectro monthly biases and darks done. French & Dan, we bent your air vent covers (see log) when hurriedly closing. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- ad4 was unresponsive when we came in. Rebooted the crate. Something is different with the DA, or at least the video cards. My memory is that in the decimated display where we show "all of all chips" we didn't used to get a banner display with the run and frame info. Now we do. Curious. However, Audrey says she's seen the decimated display with the banner, and I remember seeing it without in the recent past. No other problems during afternoon checkout. Night: ------ Still a few clouds at sunset and some faint structure, so not quite photometric. DIMM seeing about 2 asec FWHM. We started with spectroscopy. 01:25Z - Started the twilight spectra test, using cartridge 8, plate 3138 - SEGUE aug08d. Tried a 300 s exposure first. ----------- Frame 4884 - flat Frame 4885 - arc 01:31:50 Frame 4886 - 300 s exp., peak counts about 8500 in blue, about 15,000 in red 01:42:12 Frame 4887 - 450 s exp., peak counts about 2500 in blue, about 5,000 in red 02:00:03 Frame 4888 - 900 s exp., peak counts a few hundred counts above background in blue and red (probabaly not useful). David, we will call this test done, unless you tell us otherwise. We ll ask to have this plate plugged for observing now. The humidity started climbing during this sequence. 02:08Z Cartridge 8, plate 3138 - SEGUE aug08d --------------------------------------------- Needed an FK5 to find the field. Took one 1200 s exposure before we had to close quickly for high humidity. b1 r1 b2 r2 3.5 3.0 3.4 3.0 French & Dan, you had a box of four(?) air vent covers on the enclosure work area above the corrector. Apparently the wind blew the box off. We were in a hurry-up mode to close and only rescued two of the covers. Two more were out of sight and were bent by the enclosure rolling over them. We were more concerned about the humidity, so didn't retrieve them until the telescope was safe. Sorry we ruined the covers. 02:59Z - Dithered flats: ------------------------ Frames 54892 - 54906 04:41Z - Very sparse-plugged plate test: ---------------------------------------- Despite what it says in the headers the very sparse-plugged plate is really 3130. Since it has not been mapped, yet, we had to give it the old plate number of 3030 when we loaded it. Frame 54909 - bias 54910 - Flat 54911 - Arc 54912 - 2 sec arc - HgCd 54913 - 40 sec arc - HgCd 54914 - 90 sec arc - HgCd 54915 - 2 sec arc - Ne 54916 - 40 sec arc - Ne 54917 - 90 sec arc - Ne 05:35Z - Humidity down - we reopened. 05:45Z - Cartridge 6, plate 3142 - SEGUE aug08d ------------------------------------------------ GSOGTF Humidity started to rise again. Of course. Took two exposures of 1500 s. each. Plate is still not done. b1 r1 b2 r2 15.9 11.8 11.0 8.1 (tonight) 46.5 30.5 41.4 30.8 (total) 07:21Z - Humidity over the limit.
