APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 4, 2009 (MJD 55140) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Viktor Malanushenko Steph Snedden (afternoon) Craig Loomis Jon Brinkmann Demitri Muna Natalie Roe (LBL) Jim Gunn ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! Marvels and flexible engineering ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- It was partially cloudy for almost whole night. At the beginning of the night the database was not availble. It was fixed in STUI but still was not availble online. We had delay with beggining of observations. We made some LED flat-field test of BOSS cameras by Natalie and Jim. There was inconsistence in plate data base and cartridges & plates. We could not fix the problem and could not observe three cartridges 5(3085AB),8(3089B),9(3219B). One fiber (#3) on cart 4 pl 3087B was not connected. STUI guider did not work. Craig helped us with some patch and filed PR 401. We observed plates: 3631B, 3631A, 3513B, 3638A(bad, low PMT because of clouds), 3087B. Broken fibers: cart 3 plate 3631A - 93/94 cart 4 plate 3087B - 49/50 ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Fritz worked today on mirroring the platedb computer. Unfortunately something happened that appeared to break the platedb, (or it was a strange coincidence). From STUI, a platedb showActive returned this error: 00:07:38 APO.SSnedden 11 platedb f text="command failed: InvalidRequestError("Can't reconnect until invalid transaction is rolled back",) at /home/sdss3/products/Linux64/sqlalchemy/0.5.5/lib/python/sqlalchemy/engine/base.p y:576" Also, the web interface could not connect to the platedb server. Demitri was called. Since we were unable to load a cartridge in STUI, we took the time to do an engineering test for Natalie. Web database has not been availble. calibration T01:42:56.060 We skipped the first Marvels plate. 01:59Z cart.3 plate 3631B field K7 Found stars on GTF. 02:18Z - start science, seeing between 2.5" - 1.5" T02:18:51.590 broken fibers: No calibration T03:11:21.640 cart.3 plate 3631A field K4 03:26Z - start science T03:26:26.800 broken fibers: 93,94 During the last 10-15 minuts of this exposure we had bright car lights on site. It might not be very important as the telescope was pointing away from site. calibration T04:21:51.340 cart.6 plate 3513B field FIELD1572 Found stars on gotofield. 04:39Z - start science, clouds; seeing 2.5"-3.5" T04:39:30.230 no broken fibers. calibration T05:31:23.170 cart.5 plate 3085A field 51Peg We could not find stars on gotofield and could not see stars after several manual offsets. We switched to side B but the result was the same. We was not sure about clouds or pointing problem and wait while could see stars between clouds. We still could not see any stars even with big exposure time. We found out that the plate number on this cartridge is different compare what was in plateDB. We checked other carts and plates for the end of night: DB plate real cart 5 3085 3089 cart 7 3638 ok cart 4 3087 ok cart 8 3089 3085 cart 9 3635 3219 We could not fix this problem. Called to Nathan but he could not help us also. We waited until we could start the next plate. We was not sure that we could see the stars through the clouds. So, we desided to observe the plates availble now, cart 7(3638A) and 4 (3087B). 08:04Z - Cart 7, plate 3638A, field HD46375 started science through clouds. PMT was less than 10.0 Found stars on GTF. Contrast of stars to sky was very low, increased guider exposure time to 10 sec. During this exposure PMT was not better then 5-7 counts, so we marked this exposure as junk. T08:04:13.750 The DIMM stoped to get data with error: "Could not establish link to CCD on Port 2" We exit from DIMM program and run it again. We think it fixed the problem but we did not have time and was not optimistic about clouds and did not start DIMM again. Cart 4 was mounted. Plate 3087B, filed GL273. Started guider to se the field, but guider GUI did not replace the images. We checked the directory and found out that gimg* images were collected but proc-gimg* were not. STUI produced an error "09:29:46 APO.elenam 377 guider w text='could not write proc- guider file: index out of bounds'" We tried to run previous version of STUI with the same result. We could not start ds9 monitor, it did not work. sm windows did not show stars. I called for help and Craig responded us. He found the problem as a broken guider fiber #3 and patched this problem for that night. Craif filed PR # 401. We could find the stars and make last exposure.
