APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 14, 2009 (MJD 55180) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Dan Oravetz ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS Science ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Most of the night was lost to combinations of clouds, high humidity, and some light snow, but we were able to get on sky for the last of couple hours. We completed a few sequences of dithered flats with cart. 12. Details are in the Log section. At 03:17Z we experienced a failed motor movement on sp1 motor c. More details in Log section. Right around 09:53Z we had an issue with SOP. When we issued 'sop hartmann,' Hartmanns weren't taken and subsequent 'pings' were not returned with expected 'pongs' when we checked aliveness. It seemed like SOP was just hung in some indeterminate state. After ~3 mintues STUI showed a surge of SOP activity responding to all of the 'pings' and the 'sop restart' that we had also issued. So, for whatever reason, there was a delay of a few minutes before SOP acted on the commands we inputted. It seems that it could be related to the FFS state, or failure to change to commanded state or something. There are some more details in the Log section. A similar failure happened at the end of the night when we tried to take the post-cals via 'sop doCalibs' as well. Checked BOSS spectrograph temperatures and guide camera temperature. Checked out the upper and lower enclosure, checked fiducials and mirror numbers. The 45-deg. and 60-deg. alt. fiducials did not read during the slew from 121,30,00 to 121,90,00, but they both read from 121,90,00 to 121,30,00. Took some BOSS biases as an alivenss check. Focused the spectrographs. Collimate details in Problems section. Radar returns and clouds prevented us from starting ventilation. Night ----- High humidity and some light snow prevented us from opening. Dithered Flats with Cart. 12 **************************** Round 1 ------- 00:29Z - Started a sequence of dithered flats. All we issued was "sop ditheredFlat," we didn't specify the number of ticks, exposure time, etc. The command seemed to take without any issues, so we were assuming the default values were OK. By default, "sop ditheredFlat" will produce a total of 22 frames with exposure time of order 3 seconds and nTick=50. (104846 - 104867) We looked through the Wiki to see if there were any detailed instructions about adjusting nTick or the exposure times, since it seemed that the exposure time was relatively small. We did find a "Calibrate dithered flat procedure?" link under General Tasks on the BOSS Commissioning page, but nothing was written there. Under the "Dithered pixel flats" link on the same page, but under Ongoing Calibration Data for Reduction Pipeline, we saw that the dithered flats taken on 55119 and 55123 were analyzed, so we looked back through the night logs and decided to take another sequence of dithered flats using nTick=1000 and nStep=7 as was done on 55119. The collimator positions were back to where they were expected to be after the first sequence of dithered flats. After a couple minutes SOP came back, but it came back with similar errors as those shown above.
