APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 3, 2010 (MJD 55200) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shelden Dan Oravetz Kaike Pan (afternoon) Steph Snedden (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS and MARVELS Science ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- About an hour was lost to high humidity in the middle of the night. We were unable to observe cart. 3, 3637A because the guider display would not display the fibers, only gray boxes. See the log for details. STUI complained of a failed motor movement, but all of the motor positions looked like they should have when we checked following the failure. See the log for details. We tested guiding during readout of an arc to see if we could acquire stars and not have any interference from the MCP closing petals at the conclusion of the read. It seems that we are now able to start acquiring stars during readout. See the log for details. We saw a few instances of telescope "jumps", but really they were just fiducial corrections being applied during tracking. SOP was behaving really slowly during cart. 7, 3358A and we restarted it from stageManager in order to resolve the issues. See the log for details. The gang connector was difficult to insert and remove in cartridges and in the floor, but perhaps this is just temperature related. MARVELS B-pointings have the wrong guide fibers disabled. The dust counters on the APO Weather Status page were reading 0 all night and the 2.5m wind speed was -36 mph. Please check 1B for dropped/broken fibers: (017,018) - Yellow Green Magenta (021,022) - Yellow Green Orange (091,092) - Yellow Blue Cyan (099,100) - Yellow Green Cyan (103,104) - Yellow Green Yellow Observed these MARVELS plates: 4, 3098B 1, 3708B 6, 3350A 7, 3358A 7, 3358B Observed these BOSS plates: 16, 3590 - 4X900s 11, 3609 - 1X900s ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- Checked all actors and systems and confirmed working properly. Mounted cartridge 16 and checked BOSS spectro collimation. Focus ring of b1 was moved by 5 degrees. Made cartridge 3 active in platedb. 22:40Z - Started ventilation. Night ----- 00:05Z - Opened. Forced a fill from the 180L dewar. Started the DIMM. 00:20Z - ThAr lamp turned on. 00:25Z - Tweaked the rotation of the DIMM camera to fix a misalingment of the image per Howard's instructions. Cart. 16, 3590 ************** 00:31Z - Took Hartmanns and adjusted spectrograph focus. 00:35Z - gotoField. Took a guider dark and manually took a guider flat so we could get started looking for guide stars. Once it was dark enough we did see guide stars in the acquisition fibers without implementing any offsets. 01:12Z - Disabled guide fiber 10 since it looks like a double star. 01:15Z - Cals. 01:22Z - Science. 900s. When we checked the motor positions by querying the sp1mech with 'boss sp1mech raw=s', we found that the motors had all moved the amount requested. 03:00Z - Cals. 03:03Z - We opened the FF petals, turned off all the lamps and turned on the guider WHILE the arc was reading out and checked to see what the MCP would do with the state of the FF petals and the lamps. The petals stayed open, the lamps stayed off, and the guider stayed on, so we were successfully able to begin acquiring the stars during readout without any interference from the MCP. 03:14Z - Science. 900s. (S/N)^2 = 2.7 5.8 3.0 5.8 03:17Z - An azimuth fiducial correction was applied during tracking and it can be seen as a "jump" in guider image 330. The orientation of the altitude and azimuth directions relative to N and E as displayed in the Focal Plane window within STUI confirms that the jump was along the azimuth direction and also corresponds in time to the fiducial correction being applied as shown in the murmur logs. 03:30Z - MARVELS cals. 03:31Z - BOSS cals. Cart. 3, 3637A, HD37605 *********************** 03:44Z - gotoField. We were unable to observe this plate because the guider display only displayed boxes of different shades of gray over the areas where guide fibers would have been. This behavior has indicated in the recent past that an acceptable guider flat was still needed, but we took about half a dozen different flats and still had the same probelms with the boxes in the guider display. In fact, we started from scratch a number of different times by reloading cart. 3 and pointing A, slewing to the field, and taking the guider flat, and each time we started the guider to look for stars we only had the gray boxes. We looked at the images and made sure that the flat was OK and we saw counts of ~12500 (see gimg-0400). The only error-type message we saw within STUI when we had gone through this entire process was "No stars available for guiding" when we turned the guider on after taking a flat. When we looked at the non-plate view, e.g. the view of the guide fiber block the guide camera looks at, however, we could see stars in fibers (see gimg-0426). When we called Steph desperatley looking for alternatives, she mentioned that it's not surprising that this happened with cart. 3 since it has notoriously been the problem child lately. Cart. 3 had disappeared from the plate database again this afternoon and Kaike had to re-activate it, so perhaps the problem is related to the plate database? We decided to switch to the next plate since we exhausted all of our known options. 04:28Z - MARVELS cals. Cart. 8, 3638A, HD46375 *********************** 04:40Z - gotoField. Cart. 7, 3358A, 47UMA ********************* 10:30Z - gotoField. 10:42Z - We noticed SOP was being very slow. For example a 'sop ping' wouldn't register immediately and would go into the command queue and then eventually (after a few minutes) everything in the queue would be executed nearly all at once. So we did end up with a lot of "pongs" responding to our "pings", but they came much later than expected (e.g. 10:50Z tried to ping and took until 10:53Z to get the response). The same went for attempts at slewing back to the field, so before we recognized that SOP was behaving slowly, we had slews that seemed to come out of nowhere, but really they were just attempts at going back to the field that were just delayed. After SOP executed the queued commmands we were able to get subsequent commands executed much more quickly, but this didn't last because SOP soon became bogged down again. We finally decided to restart SOP from stageManager and this helped because things happened in real time. We're not sure why SOP was slow, but this isn't the first time we've seen it slow down in the middle of the night for no apparent reason (see night log from 55180). 11:16Z - Science. 12:08Z - MARVELS cals.
