APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday February 1, 2010 (MJD 55229) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (afternoon) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! - A little BOSS, a lot of MARVELS ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We had a glimpse of hope getting data at the beginning of the night, but clouds formed right after we opened. We closed shortly afterwards, and then stopped ventilating around 04:30Z after the humidity rose. We stayed closed the rest of the night, mostly due to clouds (humidity let up around 10:15Z). We obtained spectro biases and darks and adjusted the spectrograph collimators according to spectro monthly checkout. The spectrograph pressure gauge next to the chiller fans downstairs is reading a zero value, when it should read ~22psi. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- All checks at the telescope were delayed due to ongoing rotator wrap work. In addition to fixing the glycol leak, they found a separated data fiber in the wrap (the sheathing was separated, exposing the fiber itself). boss-icc was not reachable because of the above work. The guider and platedb actors were also down when I came in. They were restarted, running current versions. Later, Craig was working on boss code. When he finished, bossICC was available. Thanks, Craig. Ran sos_aporedo -m 55228 -g to get yesterday's data to show up in SoS. After that, the automated script continued to process today's test exposures, although slowly. All plates scheduled for observing tonight show as active in the database, but not all B sides show up. I did not make those B sides active since they won't be observed. Guider dark was taken. 00:26Z - gcameraICC was unresponsive. Re-started and a guider dark and flat were taken. Enclosure ventilation was delayed by high humidity. Elena started, then stopped ventilation during a fifteen minute period when the humidity dropped at about 00:30Z. Night: ----- 01:00Z - Opened enclosure. 01:10Z - gotoField cart 10, BOSS plate 3745. 01:13Z - Hartmanns 107073-74. Turned lamps on late. 01:23Z - Hartmanns 107075-76. 01:28Z - Cals 107077-78. Lots of clouds. We could not see any stars. We closed FF petals and waited until the clouds broke. 02:15Z - Closed enclosure, but remained ventilating. Arc show that position of wavelength on CCD were out of spec by sos: ARC-00107978 WAVEMID 4912.4 7990.9 4978.8(red) 8048.6(red) The test move was applied 03:12:45 56 boss moveColl spec=sp2 a=300 b=-300 c=0 and it fixed the problem: ARC-00107986 WAVEMID 4913.0 7990.9 4988.9 8063.0 We checked the position of fibers on CCDs and made small test motors moves, but it did not make sos flats results better. Took a few arcs (adjusting collimator motors), but one exposure got hung up under "flushing CCD". 03:30:44 APO.elenam 75 boss w text="exposureState timer does not add up (remain=-116.79 total=15.00)" 03:30:44 APO.elenam 75 boss i exposureState=FLUSHING,15.0,0.0 We tried apply our first aids as "sop restart" and "boss exposure abort" band others but it did not help. Elena reverted back to the current version of the ICC and cleared the ongoing exposure. Then she took a few biases. Test exposures 107079-107983 were lost and are not on disk. 04:26Z - Stopped ventilating due to high humidity. We saw that we are out of foc and made another collimation. 05:01Z hartmann (ff=107989), and we made adjustments -8811 for sp1 and -4751 for sp2. After that we were in foccus with +-1K steps out. Cloudy night tasks: 05:29Z Spectro darks, 3 darks with 900 sec exposure, ff= 107995-107997 06:38Z Spectro 25 biases, ff=107998-8022 10:12Z - Humidity better, but clouds not. We began ventilating just in case. Surprising, because the cloud camera shows thin clouds, but outside, there are only a few bright stars visible, even with the moon out. 11:02Z - Mounted cart 4, just in case. There were times when the cloud camera showed thin clouds, but then many more thicker clouds would come into view not long afterwards. We could have opened during this time, but we are pretty sure that the data would not have been of acceptable quality. 12:07Z - No good. Too many clouds and not enough time left. We stopped ventilating. 12:08Z - endNight finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 1 00:10 b1-00107970 -1 -1 dar Out 21.2 0 -1 0 2 00:44 b1-00107971 10 3745 fla Out 30.0 0 -1 0 3 00:46 b1-00107972 10 3745 arc Out 5.0 0 -1 0 Collimation: 4 01:12 b1-00107973 10 3745 arc Lef 5.0 0 -1 0 HART 5 01:14 b1-00107974 10 3745 arc Rig 5.0 0 -1 0 HART Calibration: 6 01:22 b1-00107975 10 3745 fla Out 30.0 -489 -489 -490 7 01:24 b1-00107976 10 3745 arc Out 5.0 -489 -489 -490 8 01:26 b1-00107977 10 3745 fla Out 31.0 -489 -489 -490 9 01:29 b1-00107978 10 3745 arc Out 5.0 -489 -489 -490 Sop and boss stopped could not complet exposure but repeat "flashing" loop.
