APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday March 2, 2010 (MJD 55258) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Dan Oravetz Kaike Pan (SpecMech) Jon Brinkmann (SpecMech) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The SpecMech code was installed. The night was cloudy and humid to begin with, but conditions improved and we observed 7 MARVELS fields. There are a few fibers that need checking, they are listed in the Log body. We had some finicky behavior with the manipulator arm. The dewar was at 50 lbs. and filling and will need to be changed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ========= Jon and Kaike were working on the SpecMech box at the telescope, so no checkout was done at the telescope. Verified the aliveness of the actors. Note that as a result of the work on the SpecMech, the BOSS actor was not available to begin with. Night ===== 04:00Z - Jon finished with the SpecMech code installation at the telescope. We hooked up the LN2 autofill lines and parked the telescope at stow while we waited for the weather to clear up. 05:30Z - Opened. Mounted cart. 5 and checked fiducials. 05:14Z - Cals. I had some difficulty getting cart. 8 out of the cartridge bay. The manipulator arm seemed to trip some interlock each time cartridge 8 began putting some load on the manipulator arm. I was not hitting the upper limit in travel because I could send the arm up when there was no load on it. I made sure that the arms were centered on the lift brackets on the cartridge, too. I even disabled the interlocks and it still got stuck at the same spot. Finally, I reverted to manually exercising the round gray spring mechanisms on the outside of each side of the arm near the hooks that actually grab the cartridge and this seemed to do the trick (perhaps I should have done that first).
