APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday September 8, 2001 (MJD 52161) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- (swing) Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski Eric Neilsen Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- shakedown ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- PR1314: goDrift and gangs - ignore produced incorrect gang headers. Closed ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- 19:00 ready to open. Tested: cleanupMurmur -killProcesses works as it suppose to work. Open around 20:00. Somehow, as originally installed, IOP was setting up an ancient version of astrotools. The ups installations is modified to use the correct astrotools, and all IOP's restarted. A focus of -500 is nearly in focus; rather than refining the focus now, we will take donuts based on this value, and getwait until later to turn on the focus loop. Run 2531, frame 14 has donuts (at a focus of -900, where in focus is about -500). The donuts look good. On opposite side of focus (-100), frame 22 has donuts. These frames are stored in /home/neilsen/donumtsForJim/52161 on host. Out of 189 that it should have matched, skippy only found 4; skippy is cluearly not finding the stars that it should. Something is wrong. Following the skippy documentation, we run skippy with a larger search window: skippy 2531 63 2 -window 20 This still fares poorly. We attempt skyGang: skyGang 2531 60 64 -diff We cannot find any reasonable matches. We slew to 121, 30 in an attempt to determine if a fiducial misreading was to blame, and then back. Corrections for all fiducials were small. Starting a new scan, also on 82 S, we still failed to get skippy to find a reasonable number of matches. We decided to refiducialize the telescope again (but the correction on fiducials were small, not more than 2 arc seconds). Then we set for FASTT Field 10, O startLambda 136. Skippy matched this time 41 stars! We checked the erros of star positions and they were small, so we really look this time on the proper part of the sky. We continued scanning with decBoreErr: -7.9\", which is slightly below 8 arcsec limit. THETAF = 0.0139 degrees, 50.18 arcsec CT = 0.39595 arcsec/pixel SCALEF = 16.5941 arcsec/mm AMU0 = 322.2164 degrees ANU0 = -0.0022 degrees NCAT = 66 NSTARS = 41 raBoreErr: -14.0\", decBoreErr: -7.9 azErr: 27.6\", elErr: -5.5 muErr: -14.0\", nuErr: -7.9 Correct idReport boresight values: xBore = 0.48 mm, yBore = 0.84 mm. 23:20 seeing is getting worse, now it's 2.3\", but it's still photometric. skippy results at the end of that drift: THETAF = 0.0143 degrees, 51.65 arcsec CT = 0.39601 arcsec/pixel SCALEF = 16.5956 arcsec/mm AMU0 = 331.6475 degrees ANU0 = -0.0023 degrees NCAT = 75 NSTARS = 54 raBoreErr: -14.4\", decBoreErr: -8.3 azErr: 28.3\", elErr: -5.8 muErr: -14.4\", nuErr: -8.3 Correct idReport boresight values: xBore = 0.50 mm, yBore = 0.87 mm. 23:45 endDrift 10,O on lambda 150 Since the pointing worked on 10,O - we set again on 82,S to see if we still have the problem with tha stripe. 23:55 scanStripe 82 S 150 started - and we've got the proper part of the sky! THETAF = 0.0135 degrees, 48.69 arcsec CT = 0.39594 arcsec/pixel SCALEF = 16.5954 arcsec/mm AMU0 = 335.8461 degrees ANU0 = -0.0020 degrees NCAT = 49 NSTARS = 33 raBoreErr: -15.5\", decBoreErr: -7.1 azErr: 29.9\", elErr: -5.0 muErr: -15.5\", nuErr: -7.1 Correct idReport boresight values: xBore = 23.17 mm, yBore = 0.93 mm. Comments about skyGang. Once we got a strip with good results form skippy, we ran skyGang to see if we could indeed match the stars. When the stars are close, it is very easy to do, however because of the mismatch of the # of catalog stars to the number of observed stars and there being absolutely no correlation among the two samples in the \042error bar\042 ( whatever they are) sizes, we are skeptical we could use this to find out we were very far off our pointing as we beleive the case was earlier today. How do the astrom folk find such large deviations? Neither skippy with a large -window or skyGang seem to be very effective tools for us. Meanwhile, we tested SOP/Spectrograph PRs 781 and 782 and found indeed they fail as advertised. However, if one uses pausStare and resumeStare instead of endStare -pause and goStare -resume, all works well! We updated the PRs with our results and recommended that the -pause option of endStare and the -resume option of goStare be removed -then the PR can be clsoed, we believe. :> Then we tried to go back to the beginning of 82,S stripe and see if we'll have here the same problem as the first time we pointed the telescope there. We coulnd't run skippy 2535 16 4, when the current frame number was above 30. See problem section for details. Finaly we got skippy results and, they seems to be ok. THETAF = 0.0225 degrees, 81.16 arcsec CT = 0.39602 arcsec/pixel SCALEF = 16.5956 arcsec/mm AMU0 = 292.8759 degrees ANU0 = -0.0015 degrees NCAT = 91 NSTARS = 44 raBoreErr: -11.8\", decBoreErr: -5.3 azErr: 5.1\", elErr: -12.3 muErr: -11.8\", nuErr: -5.3 Correct idReport boresight values: xBore = 23.06 mm, yBore = 0.71 mm. We couldn't find the answer for our pointing problem. PR1314: goDrift and gangs - ignore produced incorrect gang headers. NOW WORKS Problem: When moving the telescope ino 121,90 position we couldn't pin it - so we refiducilized it again, moved the telescope to 121,90 and this time we pined the telescope with no problem. 01:20 we replaced imager with a cart 6 plt 655. We didn't find guide stars, but we found fk5 stars And during the focus loop 02:00 Received=\"?GOCORR one or more axes did not end on a full step 0, 0, 0, 0, 1 This recurrs throughout the night. It seems that fk5InFiber works at DEC close to 0 and doesn't work at others DEC while testInFIber does't work at any DEC. ----------------------------------------------------- 03:00 We put the imager back on the telescope and are trying the Apache Wheel Scan at LST=1:21 (LST-15 deg)~5.7 The linestart rate requested in the Apache Wheel instructions (15100) does not match the requested scan velocity (0.291391 deg/sec), and results in long, thin PSFs. We calculate that it should have been 0.0293333 (based on the description in the instructions on where it came from), but this doesnt work either. After it gets late enough that there is no chance of getting useful data this night, we give up. We note that several of the CCDs reported vs- and vs+ voltage errors when running the fast binned scan. After rebooting the DA and following step 7 of Connie's instructions (see message 2073), they returned to normal. ====================================== From Mike's spectro monthly checkout: Spectro monthly checkout was completed except for plotting the histogram of values for the biases and darks. The results are as follows: The numbers for all flats, arcs and biases taken were in spec. No adjustment of the left-to-right fiber positions or the spectra wavelength positions were necessary. The was a small adjustment (< 0.5 pixel) made to both r1 and r2 collimator focus but none was needed for b1 and b2. For the first 3 dithered flats, XMAX for r1 was in the yellow. All other numbers for all flats, arcs and biases were in the black. Bias frames for 00010828 were inspected visually. All 4 cameras show bad areas near the left, top and right edges, running the length of the chips. I don't know if these are "normal" or not. There were also the following hot columns: b1 - c154 r1 - c1152 b2 - c2063 and several others > c2063 r2 - c1475 and c1502 Again, I don't know if these are "normal" or not. An attempt was made to plot the histogram of values for the biases but after half an hour "apo_plotbias" had only finished 2 cameras of 1 frame and so the attempt was aborted. Three dark frames were taken. b1 and r1 were out of spec (in the red) for all 3 frames. Not sure why.
