APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday September 26, 2001 (MJD 52179) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Mike Harvanek (APO) Night: Dan Long, Pete Newman, Scot Kleinman (all APO) Support: Craig Loomis (APO), Russell Owen (UW) Visitors: Larry Carey (UW) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakeup until moonset at 02:30 following Scot's plan (see Observing plans link from http://sdsshost.apo.nmsu.edu), then spectroscopy if we can. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We shook out many PRs and other changes before moonset, then completed spectro plate 701 and may have completed plate 712. We chased, but did not catch, the pointing model demon (even with the help of St. Russell of Washington). This is the last night before the mirrors are stripped out for realuminizing, and we look forward to having a shinier telescope on their return! ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- ============================================================================== NB: As we were testing logTool during shake tonight, the time tracking information before ~02:00 is inaccurate. All time from sunset to 03:00 should be logged to engineering. ============================================================================== We ran test versions of IOP/SOP, Watcher and MCP. We declared watcher and interlocks v2_11_0 and MCP v5_5_0 to be current. We also declared IOP v3_56_9 to be current, but kept the new version v3_57_0 as test (v3_56_9 has the endNight fix which has not been fully tested, but has a working version of logTool). We tried to identify the source of the 15 arcsec offset between the pointing model and science observations. On mounting the engineering camera, we found communications between the guider Macintosh and the camera were down. Craig traced this to a flaky Paralan fiber optics driver in the computer room, which was swapped (however, the removed Paralan later tested ok; Craig is investigating further). We determined the new port to log into to control the engineering camera stage is telnet t-g-sdss-2 3600, and folklored this. We homed the eng cam stage. The galil reported the home position to be -653000. A check of the instrument block then showed a ~4 arcsec shift which probably was there before the homing. We then observed 24-star pointing grids with the rotator first working in object coordinates and second in horizon coordinates, which we had identified as a difference between two procedures we were using to obtain pointing models. The data from these observations BOTH showed a ~12 arcsec offset from the current point model (TELMOD.DAT;23, dated 2001/9/8), so we conclude that the rotator coordinate system used makes no difference. Separately, Russell identified an error in our procedures for updating the instrument block for the engineering camera, which produced an ~4 arcsec difference in boresight position. We had been updating the instrument offsets, but tcc uses the engcam as a guider, so we neded to update the guider offsets as well. He used his software to produce the appropriate solution. We implemented this (tinst:I_CA1_ENGCAM.DAT;15) and observed a new pointing grid but found it made essentially no difference to the pointing problem. Using the existing pointing model, from which we have had a consistent 12-18 arcsec east offset for all of this run while observing at survey altitudes, we measured the pointing errors to stars due north above and below the pole. We found the east offset of stars above the pole was larger than those below the pole, but not enough to disentangle a time error from other errors. None of us were able to reach a conclusion on what is going wrong! We saw several occurances of unreasonably large fiducial corrections and rotator acceleration errors tonight, including: azimuth (correction for azimuth 3859988 is too large (Sep 26 22:19:08): Sep 26 22:19:23 MDT ) azimuth (correction for azimuth 7705805 is too large (Sep 27 04:22:58): Sep 27 04:23:09 MDT ) rotator (addoffset: Max accl. for rotator exceeded: 275/1000 (Sep 27 04:38:53): Sep 27 04:39:09 MDT ) rotator (addoffset: Max accl. for rotator exceeded: 406/1000 (Sep 27 04:48:56): Sep 27 04:49:07 MDT ) We also saw a further example of a bizarre azimuth position in the tcc stream ( PR2554, updated) and the continuing secondary Galil full-step error. The south saddle latch state LEDs on the latch control box are both out, so the latch is in an indeterminate state. PR 2736 filed. The nut in the LN2 fill hose for sp1 seems to be crossed and only goes onto the fill nozzle on the spectro about one turn. PR 2737 filed. In parallel with the pointing tests, we tested several PRs and other changes: MCP PR 2553: Closed. In version v5_5_0, single axis init commands now seem to initialise all the axes every time. MCP PR 2437: Not seen, but not thoroughly tested (this is offset rotator failures with read timed out on port LTA19). Watcher PR2579: Closed. Active buttons now work as advertised on both sdsshost and sdss-commish. Watcher PR2660: Not closed. Still get ''Error: can't read ''mcpData( t_bar_latch_stat)'': no such element in array'' on opening the system status panel, and the panel is lacking buttons, position information, and instrument cartoons. Happens on both 'host and 'commish under v2_11_0,. Strangly, it seems to work under v2_10_0 on the monx3 xterminal. PR updated. The new version of watcher also seems to have solved the anomalous altitude and azimuth red flags on the interlocks, for which I could not find a PR. IOP PR 2675: Not closed. The reduced logTool without the murmur log functionality is certainly faster and seems to keep up with fast typing and mouse clicks. However, one logTool no longer follows changes in activity made by the other observer. logViewer now needs to have its editability curtailed, as we found it possible to have (e.g) the mirrros section flagged as editable in both logTool and logViewer at the same time. PR updated with this feedback. SOP PR 1841: We made further tests of the fk5InFIber -test (a.k.a. testInFiber ) changes. Both old and new versions worked on low declination and variously failed on medium and high declination. See Problems section (1) for details of the individual tests. IOP other changes: help -extended myCommand works, and myCommand works without bombing. astrom v3_5b: installed as test but not tested. sdssProcedures: in checking the current/test links, it was noticed several documents (e.g. watcher) do not include the document version number, making if difficult to distinguish between current, test, and out-of-date. All documents should include the string 'This is version $Name: $', where CVS will insert the tag (version) number. Observer experts should PR this for documents in each of the their areas. All changed documentation worked as expected except the following: - Watcher link to changelog: the link from the test version reports ''The requested URL /watcherTest/changeLog.txt was not found on this server.'' Traced to the make file which only copied *.html. Fixed checked in by SJNK on mainline to also copy *.txt in the doc/www directory as well, so this chould be fixed in the next shake. - navigate.html added link to the ''how to write *OP help strings'' under software development: link works but found under config. management, not software development. - text/brightStandard.txt: need to change ''bdjeg'' to mjd in 2? places. - spectroSOS.html: Update message about Argon lines in flats. Text about Argon lines in superflats present. Is this what the changelog is referring to? Can' t tell if it's been updated though. - spectroSOS.html Update Red Monster warning messages: can't tell if it's been updated. - cmPolicy.html slight rewrite in light of new policies and evolution of this policy: can't tell if it's been rewritten. =============================================================================== After 03:00, we stopped testing and started spectro observing. Observing sequence: 03:00 Plate 701, cartridge 3. Done in three exposures. 04:34 Plate 712, cartridge 7. Probably not done in 3 exposures as we ran into twilight. Steve Kent has been asked to mark it done if the full reduction finds it acceptable. endNight _seemed_ to hang again, taking 25 minutes between telling us it was finished parsing the murmurlog before hte next message appeared. We updated and re-opened PR2733 on this. It did, eventually, finish successfully 8-) ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2599 100 O ignore 49.63 53.42 39 doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 11116, plate -9999 ------- 22:18 11116 0.0 bias {{}} ----- sequence 11117, plate 701 ------- 15.3 15.4 16.4 17.0 09:10 11117 0.0 bias {{}} 09:13 11118 10.0 flat pre-flat 09:16 11119 2.0 arc pre-arc 09:34 11120 901.0 target science 09:52 11121 901.0 target science 10:12 11122 901.0 target science 10:21 11123 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} ----- sequence 11124, plate 712 ------- 12.0 13.8 11.6 17.0 10:51 11124 10.0 flat pre-flat 10:53 11125 2.0 arc pre-arc 11:13 11126 900.0 target science 11:36 11127 1201.0 target science 12:00 11128 1202.0 target science 12:06 11129 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} Plate 701 was observed in sequence(s) 11117 for a total of 2703 seconds Plate 712 was observed in sequence(s) 11124 for a total of 3303 seconds ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:53 3 701 1001584411 0.006228 0.000769 0.025200 0.999960 04:58 7 712 1001588330 0.006432 0.004232 -0.018793 1.000020 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4494 Stays: JL4495 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 20:30 engcam 1.00000 --- ---- -530 --- ---- ---- - --- -- 0.8'' 03:53 3 701 0.99996 394 1269 -230 328 52.9 12.1 4 329 -- 2.2'' 04:56 7 712 1.00002 -198 742 -260 -24 54.9 13.2 6 60 -- 1.6'' NB: Engcam data faked from notes. ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 16:26 61 32 6 265 (W) 299 - Clear 16:59 62 35 1 244 (WSW) 323 - '' 17:32 58 31 2 254 (WSW) 324 - '' 18:03 58 32 4 260 (W) 323 - '' 18:35 56 31 1 211 (SSW) 326 - '' 19:07 55 30 1 193 (SSW) 354 - '' 19:40 55 29 2 260 (W) 312 - '' 20:12 55 28 2 183 (S) 323 - '' 20:44 54 27 4 180 (S) 301 - '' 21:16 54 24 1 181 (S) 303 - '' 21:48 54 25 2 113 (ESE) 314 - '' 22:21 54 24 0 177 (S) 314 - '' 22:53 55 22 0 205 (SSW) 313 - '' 23:25 54 24 1 208 (SSW) 314 - '' 23:57 56 22 0 249 (WSW) 297 - '' 00:29 56 22 1 347 (NNW) 318 - '' 01:02 55 23 0 290 (WNW) 264 - '' 01:34 55 23 2 331 (NNW) 288 - '' 02:06 54 24 0 244 (WSW) 295 - '' 02:38 54 17 3 250 (WSW) 217 - '' 03:11 53 15 3 266 (W) 170 - '' 03:41 54 14 2 292 (WNW) 178 - '' 04:11 52 13 5 357 (NNW) 137 - '' 04:43 54 21 9 27 (NNE) 259 - '' 05:15 58 11 2 92 (E) 238 - '' 05:48 57 10 7 123 (ESE) 244 - '' 06:24 57 8 6 114 (ESE) 224 - '' 06:56 58 7 6 91 (E) 192 - '' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Doors open, fans on 17:45 Enclosure open 18:45 Enclosure on 06:15, but whole shebang handed over to the engineering crew to start tearing it down to get the mirrors off.
