APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 12, 2001 (MJD 52195) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Daniel Long (Night) Atsuko Nitta Kleinman (Night) Scot Kleinman (Swing) Bruce Giillespie (APO) Film Crew from Discovery Channel Hercules French Leger (APO) Ruth Sabiers (APO) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake night #2. Pointing model will be nice. Test the remaining software PRs. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Very cold and windy night. We had snow earlier during the day, but it cleared by sunset. We tested as many software PRs we could test without the telescope. Summary of tonight's telescope events: Instrument block for engcam verified ( boresight error < 1 arcsecond ) Azimuth fiducials went away again with the onset of dark and cold ( by 20:30 ). Not due to MEI board Not due to slip detection box Read head _is_ sending out pulses Connector in end rack now prime suspect Azimuth aborts reappeared at roughly the same time the fiducials went away. Aborts are due to telescope hitting rotating floor. Is the new magnetostrictive feedback more sensitive to temperature? M2 actuator A stopped functioning properly Buzzes and turns very slowly if at all when commanded FFS petals at 4:30 and 6:00 didn't close at end of night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- During the afternoon DA checkout, I had run a short imager bias before the tapes were ready in their drives. Naturally, archiving was unhappy, so I attempted to archPause, so I could get the tapes happy. All sorts of things thereafter commenced and I was never able to get archDrvSts to report that each drive was happily paused. A couple said paused - a couple said disabled - paused - a couple had a much worse sounding error messages which I didn't save (sorry). I ended up rebooting the crates (sorry again, Ron, I'm sure there was a more proper thing I could have done at this point:>) and was able to successfully pause archiving on each drive at that point. However, when starting up again, I got immediate rimfire errors in id1-1, id2-1, and id4-1. autoRecovery kicked in and disabled the affected -1 drives and I followed the one drive recovery procedure again successfully, replacing the tapes in id1-1, id2-1, and id4-1. Telescope ---------- We start seeing same problems (failed fiducial readings in AZ, aborts) we saw last night soon after sunset. The problems seem to be temperature related. Please see Dan's notes below for more detail. Watcher on Commish ------------------- When we ''startInterlocks'' in watcher running on commish, we got the following messages. No such messages appeared when we did startInterlocks from HOST watcher. Opening MCP port -1: Address already in use Opening MCP port -1: Address already in use while executing ''mcpOpen'' invoked from within ''if ![mcpIsOpen] { mcpOpen }'' (procedure ''readMCPValues'' line 9) invoked from within ''readMCPValues'' (''eval'' body line 1) invoked from within ''eval $procname $args'' readMCPValues is scheduled, further errors sent to murmur logTool ------- PR 2701: skippy from logTool issued a garbled command to astrom --> closed. No logTool window popped up. PR 2665: logTool mirrors button does the wrong thing --> works! Watcher ------- *PR 2764 : Add way to post-mortem debug PLC data Now with the information that we were suppose to produce a file using ABDump command, we tried doing this. In the message from Peregrine (thtp://www.astro.princeton.edu:81/sdss-controls/msg.548.html), it said to setup tpm and then source tpmABData.tcl. Unfortunately, sourcing gave us the following message and did not complete. casitools A:Host>source tpmABData.tcl package: Command not found. tcl_platform: Undefined variable. I am afraid I could not understand from the above mentioned message to know what this dump file is and what it is for and when we are suppose to use it during the operation. If this is a critical part of the operation, I think it will be better if the ABDump command can be issued from the TPM display or IOP. We will file a PR on this command against TPM. Shortly after the PR was filed, Peregrine sent me email which helped us source and use ABDump command. If one tries this command on COMMISH, then it will fail of course because it cannot see the file and then the interlock display will show brakes, clamp, 15 degree stop in neither posision and the other buttons in red for few minutes. Meanwhile, the system status shows the imager on the back of the engineering camera and the flat field screen in intermediate state. PR was updated. PR2592: Issue watcher critical error if fiducials report error too large to correct --> We only saw normal watcher error, not critical error. So assigned back to our Watcherman, Sir Robert. plugdatabase ------------- Here are the status of the remaining plugDatabase PRs. I have some questions how to test two of the PRs. I sent an email asking Steve more detail. PR2631: - there is now a link to ''Zap an unpluggable plate'' to set priority of unpluggable plates to 0 (in which case they do not show up in list of plates available). --> I see that there is a ''Zap ...'' page, but I hesitate to zap any plates since I don't know how to unzap them. How do I unzap zapped plate? Then I can test this PR. Also, this PR might be better tested by the Pluggers than us since they will be the ones zapping. Can you request this PR to be tested by the pluggers? PR 2693: a map report can now be generated (This PR is already closed) --> What am I suppose to check to test that this PR has been addressed? PR 2694: backups are now made to a separate disk (PR already closed) --> Which disk is the backup on? Where and what should I look for to ensure this PR was addressed? PR 2700: plates with special observing instructions are display in green, not dark blue --> Sent email to all observers to make sure they can see the colors without any problem. PR 2593: S/N is now listed for plates partially done in day/night planning pages --> I have not tried entering the (S/N)^2 yet, but I assume whatever number we put in the end of the nigh page's S/N column will show up in the night plan status? I would like to try it during this dark run before I close this PR. TPM ----- Slip Detection: TPM's slip detection display has numbers that I don't understand. If we are to monitor these values during operation, we need instruction on how to do so and what to look for. Dans notes of the night's events: ---------------------------------- LogTool from SOP: After trying to run logTool in SOP and being rejected we decided to consult the book of armaments. PR2701 is closed. The instrument block was checked and found to be off by less than an arcsecond. Not bad considering the 2+ arcsecond seeing at the time the data was taken. The block was not modified. In test slews in the afternoon, the telescope behaved except for one time. At about 18:00 MDT the telescope was told to go from 60,88 mount to 180,90 mount from the TCC. The altitude did not stop at 90. It continued on at a slow pace until it reached 91.7, and the interlocks shut things down. At the same time the rotator velocity limit tripped. This may have been because the azimuth stop so abruptly in the middle of a slew with the altitude at nearly 90 . See problem section for murmur log excerpt. The telescope behaved until shortly after 20:25 when we started getting aborts in azimuth and not seeing many fiducials. By 20:50 we were to the state we had last night where almost any TCC slew greater than 10 degrees caused an abort, and only the +15 and -15 degree fiducials were being read in azimuth. French was called and was on site shortly after 22:00 ( sorry French and Ruth ) . In that time it was determined that small TCC slews would work every time, but anything approaching or exceeding 10 degrees in azimuth would cause an abort. Since the TCC acceleration parameters are higher than the mcp and the mcp was never showing an abort, we tried an experiment. We changed the acceleration and jerk parameters in axelim from .2 to .1 in their respective units ( restored to defaults later ). This allowed long slews with the TCC with no aborts. Unfortunately it neither addresses why it should be different now, nor why the azimuth fiducials stop reading. French couldn't see the barcode reader firing as we moved in azimuth across fiducials. This matches what I saw last night ( though I wasn't sure if my view was blocked rather than the box not firing ). French then opened the slip detection box and took a heat gun to the solder joints which might be in the path of the latch signal. Subsequent slews continued not showing fiducial crossings. French then swapped out the slip detection box for the old unit. Still no azimuth fiducial crossings registered. Finally we took the read head cable and connected it to a Heidenhain diagnostic box. We could see each fiducial crossing pulse just a strong as it should be, so it is not a thermal issue with fiducial/read head position. At this point is was around 01:00 and French was toast. He and Carlos will be back in the morning to continue tracing the signal as it goes to and through the end rack. We closed at about 02:00. While bringing the telescope to stow the azimuth aborted again. This time I saw why. The motor over-currented. When at the telescope other slews were tried. It was clear that some of the time the telescope started moving and the rotating floor just didn't get out of the way fast enough. At this point I think it is safe to say that temperature is the common thread between the aborts and the lack of fiducial crossings. Another possibly temperature related issue is with the M2. When trying to find focus at about 01:30, I was seeing the star shift some 30 arcseconds across the chip for a 100 micron focus change. It was traced to the A actuator not moving much if at all. It would make a buzzing sound and move maybe one turn every 10 seconds. A wiggle check of the connectors didn't change anything. Finally when we went to close we found the flat field petals at the 4:30 and 6:00 positions were still open. We closed them by hand when the telescope was low enough to reach them. endNight -doTpm ran without any problem. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2644 100 O bias 86.07 87.33 21 2645 100 O ignore 89.72 90.87 22 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 11176, plate -9999 ------- 23:15 11176 0.0 bias 01:07 11177 0.0 bias 01:44 11178 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 16:44 35 1 7 319 (NW) 428 - 17:16 34 -4 7 337 (NNW) 460 - 17:53 33 0 6 0 (N) 751 - 18:25 32 -1 8 3 (N) 690 - 18:58 31 6 18 30 (NNE) 578 - 19:29 31 8 16 5 (N) 522 - 20:29 30 11 14 1 (N) 469 - 21:05 30 12 10 344 (NNW) 326 - 21:37 31 13 18 356 (NNW) 266 - 22:18 31 12 18 15 (NNE) 300 - 22:50 31 13 16 349 (NNW) 268 - 23:22 31 14 15 359 (NNW) 293 - 23:54 30 14 14 338 (NNW) 239 - 00:26 30 12 20 20 (NNE) 331 - 00:59 30 11 14 32 (NNE) 387 - 01:31 29 13 21 8 (N) 356 - 02:03 30 10 9 17 (NNE) 329 - 02:35 31 3 14 30 (NNE) 206 - 03:05 31 2 27 21 (NNE) 188 - 03:36 31 2 18 27 (NNE) 165 - 04:12 31 1 35 2 (N) 216 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_58_2 Watcher: v2_12_1 MCP: v5_6_1 TPM: v2_4_2 AstroDa: v14_39 TCC: 2.5.5 sdssProcedures: v1_31:w astroDa v14_39 astroline v10_9 tccmon v1_7 plate database v2_4 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: ----- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A: 0.0720 0.0710 Axial B: -0.0930 -0.0980 Axial C: 0.0600 0.0610 Trans D: -1.4660 4.1800 Lateral E: 1.8140 1.9365 Lateral F: 1.3890 0.4370 GALILS Commanded: 5377. -3699. 923. -208. 31535. 30647.
