APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday October 14, 2001 (MJD 52197) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Science: 82N lambda 126 to -160 Calibration : BD17 data donuts for Jim Left over from shakedown: large offset data to simulate bad pointing 6:00 and 4:30 petals failed to close again. PT dropout is giving us problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- PT dropout -------------- We had difficulty moving the dropout. Mike and Scot reset the breaker, but the motor will stop after moving the dropout for couple cm or so. We still managed to open --- in 45 min. We can close it fast by pulling the cables that hold the dropout in case of sudden weather change. Hercules/French has been notified. Spectro guider --------------- The guider was not hooked up. It took several reboot before we got the guider to successfully take a frame. Mirror When we first checked the mirror numbers, we noticed that Lateral E and F were more off than the allowed tolerances. It turns out that they are now reading in mm not in inch (we verfied this with Hercules), and we were actually seeing good mirror numbers. Run 2659 82N ------------- frame 37 -- rot correction applied. We did not have to, but since we had time, we did. frame 48 lambda=123 science begins frame 160 lambda=140 stopped to get bd17 data. The seeing is about 1''through the run. Run 2660 BD17 -------------- The following frames are saved for Jim in the usual place (/data/photo/optics 52197). r frame 15-19 i frame 17-21 u frame 19-23 z frame 21-25 g frame 23-27 Run 2661 82N lambda133 ----------------------- When we started the drift we saw streaks instead of stars. Apparently, while slewing the AZ aborted (around getclock~1003120985). We did not see the similar error in watcher which we saw last night. Run 2662 82N lambda 133 ------------------------ While slewing here, we had too large an AZ correction message in murmurlog. Oct 14 22:43:18 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction 3845749 to azimuth Oct 14 22:43:18 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_E_trcErr correction for azimuth 3845749 is too large Oct 14 22:43:18 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_W_trcWarn Not disabling MS.ON; error 3845749 (max allowed: 600) Skippy said the posistions were good so we decide not to worry about it. We did not have to apply any rotator offset either. frame 18 lambda 135 :sciece begins frame ~440 lambda ~ -160 :We start seeing thin small clouds in the west in the cloud camera. After couple cloud camera frames showed that we were getting more clouds, we took Jim's donuts. The frames are saved in /data/photo/optics/52197. frame 480 in-focus (focus=-339) frame 490 -300 out-of-focus (focus=-642.3) frame 494 +300 out-of-focus (focus=-42.3) Then we took the data to simulate bad pointing which was part of the shakedown take, but was not completed. The frames are saved in /data/scratch/52197 since /data/photo was getting full. frame 511 - 514 15'' offset in ALT frame 523 - 527 30'' offset in ALT frame 538 - 521 1' offset in Alt We stopped the drift then to take on-scope bias (we were still with clouds according to the cloud camera). Before we started the next drift, we got the following watcher error. We were tracking at the time and no axis showed any problem in mcpMenu or tccmon. altitude (addoffset: Max accl. for altitude exceeded: -130/1000 (Oct 15 04:10:08): Oct 15 04:10:21 MDT ) So we decided to ignore this message. Why did watcher throw this error? Run 2663 on-scope bias We saw blue screen when the drift started, but by frame 11, the frames were black. We decided to close because the thin clouds were still around and we had about an hour before twilight --- not enough time to switch instruments and start spectroing. FlatFIeldPetal --------------- When we were putting the telecope away, the 6:00 and 4:30 petals again did not close. We checked the fuse and it was indeed blown. We put in a new one, but it did not help. We will leave it to the day crew to take a look at this. We closed the petals by hand. The motor briefly turned on after the new fuse was placed, but the motor stopped and the petals stayed open. We thought that maybe the new fuse were blown, and placed another new one in. But when we plugged the power cable back on, nothing happened. These are the same petals that did not close last night and Lynn found the fuse blown during the day. Since we need to open and close the screens often when we do spectro, they need to be more reliable. PT closing ----------- The lower dropout did not close and Mike climbed on the ladder and pulled the cables holding the dropout to get the dropout back up. But then when we tried to close the upper shutter, it refused to move. We opened the box next to the ladder which has the power switch on the side and moved the toggle switch to remote --> manual and off --> down. This moved the shutter down. Mike held the dropout close while the shutter moved down. Currently, the shutter is holding the dropout from dropping out. USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN OPENING THE DOME SLIT TO WORK ON THE DROPOUT. THE DROPOUT IS NOT SECURED AND WILL FALL OPEN IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN BEFORE OPENING THE SLIT. endNight finished without a problem. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last
