APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday October 18, 2001 (MJD 52201) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing, night: Jurek Krzesinski, Pete Newman (APO) Support: Wendell Jordan, Jon Brinkman, Craig Loomis (APO), French Leger (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! spectroscopy and maybe imaging during the second half of the night. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Afternoon: A new wiring harness for the MCP/MEI fiducial connections prepared, as well as a new version of MCP (v5_6_4) to debug the crossings. These were implemented. After some fun resetting the fiducial corrections all seemed well. Thanks to Wendell Jordan, Sir Robert, Jon B. and French. Criag solved Jurek yesterday's logTool problem. Six plate done: Cart 8 plt 674 done with 3 exposures of 900 sec. Cart 1 plt 649 done with combined exposures from last night and tonight. Cart 6 plt 723 done with 3 exposure (900,1200,1400 sec) Cart 5 plt 692 plate done with 3 exposures (1200,1500,1200 sec). Cart 4 plt 714 done with four exposures (1200,1500,1500,800 sec). Cart 7 plt 544 done with additional two exposures (1200,1200). All ''full step errors'' ignored, One axis abort happened (10 minutes science lost). No other serious problems occured. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- During the afternoon, Wendell Jordan produced a new wiring harness for the MCP/ MEI fiducial connections, and Sir Robert the Good produced a new version of MCP (v5_6_4) to debug the crossings (see also his email sdss-controls/563). These were implemented. After some fun resetting the fiducial corrections, with help from Jon B and French, all seemed well. For the first target (plate 674, cartridge 8), we saw all azimuth crossings from 121 to 45 deg. Altitude and rotator also performed nomnially. Jurek's logTool problem from yesterday has been solved by Criag. It afects bash users, and it's caused by a bug in /p/ghostview/v1_5b/ups/setup.sh, script- see the problem section. All ''full step errors'' ignored. Some interesting MCP errors reported by watcher - see problem section. 20:40 Cart 8 plt 674 -first exposure. Stars found with fk5. Plate done with 3 exposures. Guider efficiency: 85-95%, seeing 1.5'', lowest (S/N)^2 at 900 sec int.time: 5.2 We noticed that TPM doesn't dispalay secondary MIG values, so we rebooted MIG at the telescope and we got MIG value readings. 22:13 Cart 1 plt 649 -first exposure. Stars found stright away, however we applied a rotator correction 200'' about fiber 5, to get them close to centers. Plate observed yesterday: smear was taken and the lowest (S/N)^2 was 8. Tonight, guider efficiency:80-85%, seeing 1.5'', (S/N)^2 at 1000 sec int.time: 4.3. We took another smear, since the one from yesterday was taken on clouds. We decleared this plate done taking into account all observations from yesterday, including the one with (S/N)^2 1.9. 23:12 Cart 6 plt 723 -first exposure. gotoField - stars found. Plate done with 3 exposure (900,1200,1400 sec) 00:58 Cart 5 plt 692 -first exposure, we gotField, without the guider flat, then precalib, and then gcam - stars found at once. Seeing is getting worse. 01:07 Axis Halted - the old problem: ''read timed out on port LTA19'', see the problem section. Exposure lost (aborted). 01:12 Cart 6 plt 692 -started again. Guider efficiency low: 56%, improved with time. Plate done with 3 exposures (1200,1500,1200 sec). 03:00 Cart 4 plt 714 -first exposure, stars found at once. Trying again be more more efficient: gotoField (without guider flat), gcam (stars found), precalib, then centering, focusing, guiding... Guider efficiency: 70-75%. Plate done with four exposures (1200,1500,1500, 800 sec). 05:02 Cart 7 plt 544 -first exposure, stars found with the first gcam. One exposure done yesterday (the lowest (S/N)^2 1.9). Seeing very good: 1.4'' , guider efficiency: 35-80%. Plate finished with additional two exposures (1200,1200), smear taken just before twilight. There were no problems with finding stars! endNight finished with great rejoicing :) Closed at 06:20 with cart 2 plt 645 mounted, LN2 spectro dewar replaced Two items noted while closing: 1) The actual spectrograph chiller pump pressure is 38 psi. The nominal pressure is 28psi. 2) The lamp for the rotator is out on the slip detection box. Due to the hardware changes this afternoon, it is not known if this was reset (on) at the start of night. Observers should be sure to press the reset button on the front of the slip detection box during afternoon check-out to reset (turn on) the lamps for all axes. Conclusions from using a new MCP v5_6_4: We ran MCP v5_6_4 all night, with AZ.BARCODE=0 (i.e. we did not change the default). During tracked spectro observations, we don't think we saw any problems at all, except for the occasional unidentified bar code. During fast slews to and from instrument change, we saw fairly regular instances of 'failed to read latch position' on a variety of azimuth fiducials, occasionally two in a row (e.g. 10, 11, 13 around 00:34 MDT). We saw very few 'correction too large' errors. We believe both these are normal (always seen them) and benign. We saw NO instances of a complete miss of a fiducial with no messages at all, which is a distinct improvement on MJD 52198. French can correct this if it's wrong, but he and Jon again saw no missing interrupt signals during the fast slews, so any problems remain downstream of the intrrupt input to the MCP and MEI boards. Air temperature varied between about +12C and +8C (on the tower, not in the pit). One option to investigate further is to run tomorrow night under MCP 5_6_4 with AZ.BARCODE=1 to see if the problems come back again. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2668 100 O bias 74.15 94.32 93 doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 11291, plate 674 ------- 22:40 11291 0.0 bias 02:31 11292 10.0 flat 02:33 11293 2.0 arc 02:54 11294 900.0 target 5.2 03:11 11295 901.0 target 5.6 03:28 11296 778.0 target 3.8 03:34 11297 240.0 smear 03:37 11298 10.0 flat 03:39 11299 2.0 arc ----- sequence 11300, plate 649 ------- 03:59 11300 10.0 flat 04:01 11301 2.0 arc 04:32 11302 1000.0 target 04:38 11303 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11304, plate 723 ------- 05:01 11304 10.0 flat 05:03 11305 2.0 arc 05:28 11306 901.0 target 05:52 11307 1201.0 target 06:19 11308 1401.0 target 06:26 11309 240.0 smear 06:30 11310 10.0 flat 06:32 11311 2.0 arc ----- sequence 11312, plate 692 ------- 06:42 11312 10.0 flat 06:44 11313 2.0 arc 07:34 11314 1201.0 target 08:01 11315 1502.0 target 08:24 11316 1200.0 target 08:31 11317 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11318, plate 714 ------- 08:41 11318 10.0 flat 08:43 11319 2.0 arc 09:21 11320 1200.0 target 09:49 11321 1501.0 target 10:17 11322 1501.0 target 10:34 11323 814.0 target 10:40 11324 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11325, plate 544 ------- 10:51 11325 10.0 flat 10:53 11326 2.0 arc 11:24 11327 1200.0 target 11:47 11328 1201.0 target 11:54 11329 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 20:50 8 674 1003459818 0.003399 0.001297 -0.005765 1.000100 22:30 1 649 1003465846 0.001836 -0.001662 0.070193 0.999720 23:13 6 723 1003468407 0.001959 0.000545 0.001701 0.999780 01:06 5 692 1003475210 0.001959 0.000545 0.001701 0.999950 01:50 5 692 1003477811 0.001959 0.000545 0.001701 1.000010 03:03 4 714 1003482184 0.001859 0.000456 0.022760 1.000120 05:05 7 544 1003489517 0.000267 0.000652 -0.027690 1.000290 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4558 Stays: JL4557 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 20:50 8 674 1.00010 -986 285 -65 26 54.4 11.7 10 293 - 1.5 22:29 1 649 0.99977 2270 2923 -150 13 46.4 11.3 10 285 - 1.5 23:12 6 623 0.99978 2171 2882 -115 -26 44.6 11.1 6 342 - 1.7 01:07 5 692 0.99995 494 1466 -110 -25 54.5 9.4 14 30 - 2.5 01:49 5 692 0.99999 99 1155 -110 -42 49.1 10.3 21 36 - 1.9 03:03 4 714 1.00012 -1184 49 -130 -5 57.1 9.9 19 13 - 1.6 05:05 7 544 1.00029 -2863 -1368 -140 113 64.2 9.7 21 10 - 1.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 16:27 57 14 8 300 (WNW) 945 - pcl all the night 16:59 57 15 6 311 (NW) 821 - 17:32 55 15 7 270 (W) 878 - 18:04 53 14 13 304 (NW) 911 - 18:36 52 13 14 303 (WNW) 1012 - 19:09 52 13 13 312 (NW) 909 - 19:39 52 11 7 298 (WNW) 886 - 20:09 52 12 9 286 (WNW) 890 - 20:41 53 12 11 277 (W) 851 - 21:21 53 13 7 286 (WNW) 975 - 21:53 53 14 14 295 (WNW) 1010 - 22:23 52 16 4 298 (WNW) 1021 - 22:54 52 16 9 286 (WNW) 1049 - 23:26 51 16 9 302 (WNW) 1004 - 23:59 51 16 5 316 (NW) 1067 - 00:31 50 13 6 358 (NNW) 1232 - 01:02 48 13 8 26 (NNE) 1123 - 01:35 50 13 18 32 (NNE) 1120 - 02:08 50 12 18 21 (NNE) 683 - 02:40 50 11 18 15 (NNE) 759 - 03:14 49 12 15 24 (NNE) 712 - 03:45 49 11 21 15 (NNE) 684 - 04:15 50 11 11 3 (N) 696 - 04:48 49 10 18 352 (NNW) 649 - 05:18 49 10 18 6 (N) 566 - 05:50 49 10 17 355 (NNW) 527 - 06:22 49 10 16 26 (NNE) 430 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Opened at 19:50 with cart 8 plt 674 mounted. I have no idea who is responsible for the ghostview product, or if there is a newer one. ] setup iop iop logTool was failing for Jurek with a strange rld error: im> logTool 3437562:caget: rld: Fatal Error: Cannot Successfully map soname 'libezcaScan.so' under any of the filenames /lib/libezcaScan.so:/usr/lib//libezcaScan.so:/usr/op enwin/lib/libezcaScan.so:/usr/lib32/libezcaScan.so:/usr/lib32/internal/libezcaSc an.so:/lib32/libezcaScan.so:/opt/lib32/libezcaScan.so: Error: child process exited abnormally Turns out this is due to a bug in the /p/ghostview/v1_5b/ups/setup.sh script, where the LD_LIBRARY_PATH was being overwritten: if [ ''$LD_LIBRARY_PATH'' != '''' ]; then LD_LIBRARY_PATH=''/lib:/usr/lib/:/usr/openwin/lib''; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH fi LD_LIBRARY_PATH is being unilaterally overwritten if it is already set -- the csh setup.csh has the logic the other way, which is why Jurek is affected, but not Pete. But /p/tpm/v2_4_2/ups/tpm.table sets up LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /p/epics/extensions/lib/iris, which is what caget needs when called by logTool. Actually, that section of setup.sh is entirely unnecessary on IRIX and could be removed (there is no /usr/openwin). Or the logic could be reversed (the quick fix: replace != with =). Or a proper ups table could be created and envAppend(LD_LIBRARY_PATH, ''/usr/openwin'') called. In the meanwhile, sh users can workaround by starting iop/logTool with: setup iop LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/p/epics/extensions/lib/iris iop logTool This would be a bad longterm fix, as it also overwrites LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Works now, though. - craig ============================================== Axies halted: 0 7 > Started; Cmd='offset rotator 0.0004275' 0 0 F Modu=''prt_Read''; Text=''read timed out on port LTA19:'' at 01:00 approx.
