APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday December 4, 2001 (MJD 52248) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (swing) Dan Long (night) Eric Neilsen (night) Scot Klienman (3.5m defector) Jurek Krzesinski (3.5m defector) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BD17smear on BD17, followed by pointing model to incorporate today's fiducial table data taken with telescope at night time temperatures. biasGen and biasCheck as well as on sky imager shake after the model. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- New mcp cut with the morning's fiducial data (v5_8_5) mcp also has fix for encoder adjustment and appears to work. bd17smear data taken on bd17 using plate 744 (frame 12050) Weather closed us for about 7 hours in the middle of the night biasGen and biasCheck run on imager. Dewar 1 shows 20 to 50 DN difference. Pointing model taken with new fiducial tables. Lovely 1.6" model implemented. Spectro coolant pressure up to 51 PSI at night's end. Software declared current: IOP: v3_64_3 MCP: v5_8_5 PRs closed: SOP/1841: bd17smear should work. IOP/2729: logTool shouldn't (or should it) use tabs SOP/2883: Guider flat to be taken at slew end with gotoField -gflat IOP/2834: Problem change buttons in logTool fail to grab change time window PRs created: SOP/2950: BD17smear doesn't know where BD17 is! SOP/2951: fk5InFiber -test should be just fk5InFiber now. MCP/2952: Bad pvt messages from mcp on large offsets Shake summary to be sent out tomorrow ( maybe we will get to the imager part tomorrw in the course of science ). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The fiducial data taken this morning showed a scale factor difference of one part in 10**5. As suspected, the difference in the lower enclosure temperature between day and night is large enough to significantly impact scale. This is significant enough to warrant changing the table in the mcp and taking a new pointing model. A new version of the mcp with the updated tables has been cut and declared ( v5_8_5 ). It was changed to once the bd17smear data was taken, so that a new pointing model could be made with the new table. During afternoon checkout a couple of weird errors were seen which didn't seem to impact anything. First, I issued an initNight -poolInit and immediately got the following critical error. id5's archiver and tape drives poolFullGang (0 Gangs until node dies: Dec 04 15:59:42 MST) poolFullFrame (0 Frames until node dies: Dec 04 15:59:42 MST) The pool was fine, and a subsequent goDrift produced no errors. Second, this murmur log message is seen in response to some spectro exposures. What is wrong here? The exposures themselves seem OK, and SoS isn't unhappy. If around the beginning of the night, you are unsure if someone has ever saved the log, you can check in /astrolog/[mjd] to see if manualLog.par exists. If it does it has been saved. If not, don't load the log because you'll wipe out all the starting headers etc. SOP/2950: BD17smear doesn't know where BD17 is! After centering up on plate 744's field ( 348.7, 14.4 J2000 ), we went to BD17 using BD17smear and it wasn't there. We then went to an FK5 star at BD17's coordinates and the FK5 star showed up right away. We centered it up and went to try BD17 again. Still nothing. Suspecting BD17smear's coordinates for BD17 might be wrong we checked what the PT had in its database ( mtstds product ). The coordinates were indeed very different. BD17smear 332.8716 18.09139 J2000 mtstds 332.8783 18.09256 J2000 Applying the difference as an offsetADR after running BD17smear again, the star showed up in fiber 11. The total offset required to center up turned out to be 29.5" East, 7.5" North One side effect of the ~100" object offsets that BD17smear uses to move the star from the guide fiber to the science fiber, is a rash of complaints from the mcp about bad pvt triplets. This doesn't cause an abort. Nor does it seem to impact pointing, but it is a little disturbing to see. Is this an mcp problem, a TCC problem, an MEI problem, or no problem at all? A PR ( mcp/2952 ) was filed against the mcp. An excerpt of the murmur log can be found in the problems in detail section. For the second night in a row we got an exposure/frame mismatch. Eric said the window which started the teamster should complain when this happens, but it isn't doing that now. Eric later found that the check in iop had been commented out for some reason. Apparently it cried wolf a lot complaining about mismatches at times when it was OK to have a mismatch. The code was modified to complain only at times when the mismatch was a real problem. A new version of IOP with these changes has been cut ( v3_64_3 ). Comparing tonight's bias run to the most recent mjd for which there is biasGen data, most of the CCDs are within 5 DN of the previous value. However dewar 1 shows much larger differences ( on the order of 20 to 50 DN ). Comparing to an even earlier mjd shows very similar differences. This would seem to indicate that there were pretty large changes in dewar 1 bias values sometime during the last month. Is a change of 20 to 50 dn something to worry about? See the problems in detail section for output of biasCheck against 52218 and 52196. Beware of the latch control panel key. It will not stay in place with the switch in the auto position. It was apparently left that way today, and when we went down later in the evening to swap cartridges, there was no key. We located the spare in the cabinet in the lower enclosure, so we could at least continue to operate. Fortunately Eric spotted the original on the floor near the telescope so we put the spare back. Closed 20:45 due to high wind. Nearly opened an hour later, but while switching to the engineering camera clouds and high wind returned just as we were about to open. Clouds, high wind, and high humidity kept us closed until about 03:30. We opened and started a pointing model with the mcp running with the tables generated from this morning's data. Despite seeing poor enough to cause the TCC trouble determining a centroid ( in excess of 3 arcseconds at times ), a 1.6" rms pointing model was created from the 72 point grid file GRID_9_8_27_88_T_30.DAT. It was implemented. We saw several windscreen touching in azimuth errors during the model. It may be temperature related, as it was much colder when we reopened ( there were none earlier in the evening ).
