APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday December 14, 2001 (MJD 52258) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Stephanie Snedden (APO) Mike Harvanek (APO) Atsuko Nitta Kleinman - swing (APO) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science, following the usual planning strategies. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A mix of spectroscopy & imaging. 3 plates declared done. Strip 32 N partially done, but ended early because of clouds. UCAC coverage under variable clouds. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout went without problems. At sunset, skies were clear overhead, but a band of clouds was headed our way, so we set up for spectroscopy. We got a large azimuth error on our first slew of the evening (cartridge 3). We had to force acceptance of a fiducial. After that, we still saw no guide stars. We slewed away, then back. As a check, we re-enabled collimation (it should have already been enabled), and voila, our fk5 star was there. We think the original lack of a guide star may have been both the collimation process not waking up properly plus a dropped fiducial reading, but really aren't sure. 04:20 - We had a too-large-to-correct message from the rotator while slewing to plate 412. We forced a correction, and continued without problems. Plates 725, 745, 412 completed & declared done. 07:00 UT Started imaging on stripe 32 N. Details in imaging section. Seeing ranged from good to acceptable & was pretty variable. Dewar 4 was throwing a lot of nquartile errors on different CCDs. Visual inspection of images didn't show anything unusual, just the expected bright star. Either all bright stars go down column 4 ;-) or there is some sensitivity offset? Out-of-focus donuts saved to /data/photo/optics/52258. See imaging section for frame numbers. 10:23 UT - Went to get UCAC coverage through partly cloudy skies. After the first scanStripe, we had an azimuth abort. After an axis init, we completed the slew & started the drift. Conditions were NOT PHOTOMETRIC. 11:50 UT - back to spectroscopy, but the clouds were too opaque. We closed up. EndNight completed succesfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2774 100 O bias 135.06 151.70 71 in doghouse 2775 32 N ignore -64.35 -60.63 39 2776 32 N ignore -62.57 -59.58 34 2777 32 N science -62.58 -19.68 299 2778 100 O bias -57.25 -52.77 44 on telescope 2779 13 S ignore -60.89 -59.83 20 az abort 2780 13 S calibration -61.27 -48.77 97 UCAC not photometric ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Strip 32 N, Run 2777: --------------------- 07:00 UT - Start scan 07:11 UT - Start of ramp at lambda -61, frame 17 07:19 UT - Start of science at lambda -59, frame 31 Seeing went from good to acceptable at about frame 50 (lambda -56).
