Completed three plates, with exposures on two more. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We mounted the imager before sunset, but opening was delayed by a rise in humidity. We were imaging by 0145 UT, but seeing was very bad. Our only real accomplishment was donuts for Jim. At 0245 we switched to spectroscopy. 03:00 UT: Plate 804. Seeing remained bad, but we were able to get decent efficiency. We declared this high S/N plate done. We debated putting a star cluster plate on, but opted against it because of the poor seeing. The notes recommend "reasonable seeing". Any guesses as to what the seeing limits for these plates might be? 05:45 Switched to cartridge 7, plate 774. Two nights ago we found an FK5 star, but no guide stars for this cartridge, then were clouded out before we could troubleshoot. Tonight, the same thing happened.This time we did a spiralPattern to see if the guide stars were anywhere near. We tried a 30 asec spiralPattern. The stars were found quite far away from the FK5. We are not sure what is going on with this plate. We wonder about the FK5 coordinates, and think they may be wrong. Could someone check them? The FK5 offsets were RA=-7, Dec=11 asec. The guide stars were found to be RA=32, Dec=-5 asec away from the FK5 star. The plate was declared done. 08:10 UT: On to cartridge 8, plate 571. Guide stars were found in the fibers right away. This plate was declared done, after previous exposure times were added to what we got tonight. 09:50 UT: Cartridge 6, plate 327. We had to use startMon -simple, since the regular startMon failed. We have seen this problem before. Details in the problem section. SoS could not reduce the b1 arc, saying "APOREDUCE: sdR-b1-00012611.fit: ABORT: Unable to reduce this science exposure (need arc)". We went ahead with our science exposures and took a post-calib. We declared the plate done, based on the other three cameras. If it turns out that b1 was below the required S/N, the database will have to be changed. Dan's Mac hung on a print job during the middle of an exposure on plate 327. We lost that exposure. As a result we were not able to declare this plate done. 11:30 UT:Cartridge 5, plate 520. Guide stars were found right off the bat. The pre-calib failed because the ports were unavailable (curious because a grabInst had apparently succeeded). The ports had been logged out, followed by a grabInst after the computer-hang problem, but needed to be logged out again. After that, and a new grabInst, the pre-calib succeeded. We are not sure why the first attempt to log out the ports didn't resolve the problem. Seeing deteriorated badly during this time, exceeding 4 arcsec at times. Note that we decided to ship photo tapes, even though the imaging drifts were all bad. There is an on-telescope bias that jeg may want on these tapes. Secondary actuator A behaved all night.
