APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday January 22, 2002 (MJD 52297) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Dan Long Eric Neilsen ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Spectroscopy at least until moonset. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We observed two plates tonight( 1 803, 3 827), but between moonlight, dust, clouds, and high winds nothing was declared done. Met tower dust counter reading about 1/2 the "true" 1 micron value ( as measured by the other 2 counters ). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The night started out promising with clear skies. After getting set up on plate 803, just as twilight was ending we had a dust event. It lasted about an hour-and-a-half. We opened and struggled against the moonlight for another couple hours, then clouds moved in, making observing essentially impossible. There was a break in the clouds after the moon set which lasted long enough to get one good science exposure in on plate 827. That combined with the marginal exposures taken earlier fell just short of the minimum (S/N)^2. We waited in vain for another break in the clouds to get the last little bit of signal and a decent smear. Finally at a little after 11:00 UT, we closed when the wind speed exceeded the limit. We did not reopen. Dust counter note: The dust counter in the 3.5m enclosure is registering 1 micron counts nearly a factor of two higher than the counter on the met tower. The third dust counter agrees much more closely to the one in the 3.5m enclosure than the one on the tower. I think one should treat the tower readings very conservatively when making decisions on opening/closing due to dust. If the 3.5m enclosure meter is correct, then we are closing when the dust counts are around 6000 and opening when they fall below 4000 when we apply the normal closure conditions to the readings from the met tower. 1 803: ------- Guidestars visible from the start. Had to close right after the precalib sequence. Reopened about 1.5 hours later. Got two science exposures with minimal (S/N)^2 due to moonlight. 3 827: ------- Needed FK5 to get guide stars. Cirrus whisps starting 05:10. Clouds making observing impossible starting 06:20. 09:10 clouds thinned enough to attempt another science exposure. Wind speeds flirting with limit 09:30. Just missed the (S/N)^2 threshold according to SoS. It says 13.0 on the lowest one, but is still colored red. Additionally, the smear attempts were taken in almost total overcast. Considering the marginal conditions under which this plate was observed, unless we are told differently, we will not consider this plate done without an additional exposure and a smear. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2897 100 O ignore 172.49 -176.72 84 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 12838, plate -9999 ------- 00:10 12838 0.0 bias ----- sequence 12839, plate 803 ------- 4.2 2.2 5.2 5.6 01:24 12839 0.0 bias  2.8 2.5 8.5 14.2 01:45 12840 10.0 flat ------------------- 01:47 12841 2.0 arc 7.0 4.7 13.7 19.8 03:43 12842 10.0 flat 03:45 12843 2.0 arc 04:03 12844 900.0 target 04:26 12845 1201.0 target 04:33 12846 240.0 smear ----- sequence 12847, plate 827 ------- 14.3 17.5 13.2 13.0 04:59 12847 10.0 flat 05:02 12848 2.0 arc 05:20 12849 900.0 target 05:38 12850 900.0 target 06:00 12851 1202.0 target 06:23 12852 1201.0 target 06:46 12853 1201.0 target 06:52 12854 240.0 smear 09:15 12855 10.0 flat 09:17 12856 2.0 arc 09:44 12857 1201.0 target 10:07 12858 1201.0 target 10:57 12859 240.0 smear 11:01 12860 10.0 flat 11:03 12861 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- getclock Axis position and calibration offset Scale Time Ct Plate time Az El Rot Factor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:41 1 803 1011750089 10.85 .0050 56.73 .0005 189.08 -.0005 1.000060 03:41 1 803 1011757317 -40.43 .0033 49.82 .0016 146.94 .0004 1.000040 05:14 3 827 1011762880 108.88 .0018 63.51 -.0008 -89.84 -.0084 1.000160 09:22 3 827 1011777773 250.85 .0027 64.84 .0026 88.58 -.0084 1.000120 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- endNight -doSpectro -doTpm completed successfully.
