APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday February 6, 2002 (MJD 52312) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (APO) Mike Harvanek (APO) Jurek Krzesinski (APO) Eric Neilsen (FNAL; by phone) Scot Kleinman (APO) Dan Long (APO) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- On-sky imager shake test then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- UCAC/shake test scan (run 2955 82 N) performed in poor seeing. A science imaging scan was attempted but the seeing remained poor. Three plates finished (827, 832, 526). Good data for another plate (333). Some shaking of S-o-S performed. endNight did not complete. Do not delete the pool until the data are archived to tapes. The imaging data must be archived and shipped to FNAL because although the seeing was poor, the data should be useful to find out if the astroda fix placed in the current software fixed all the problems and the UCAC data should be good enough for the monthly calibration. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- MST 16:38 (23:38) We had many "no gangs" errors in Watcher. So we decided to do "teamster -force" to restart the teamster. Shortly after that, we noticed that there many complaints in the murmurlog about id2 (see problem section for the exact message). An attempt to do a goDrift -bias resulted in a process hanging. We consulted with Craig who verified that the crates were all alive and seeing the world. Another restart of teamster did not help and we decided to reboot the id2 crate. This fixed whatever that went wrong and we were up and running again. 00:40 Opened the enclosure. 01:10 I had to reboot photo1 crates because I typed "exit" in the dsclat window which is suspsected to have bad effect. Ron, did I need to do a reboot? Or was it ok to go on? 0131Z False alarm for imager's LN2 status. ln2 empty (Feb 06 18:27:33 MST) Triggered when the LN2 fill started. 0140Z We started a drift on 82N. skippy results tell us we are pointing well. The seeing was poor (around 1.8") or so. 0216Z lambda=-113 frame 68 start of rampup. The actual focus value was -250 off the value provided by the focus formula. After completing the UCAC/shake test scan (run 2955, 82 N) we decided to attempt a science scan even though our seeing was 2+ arcsecs because the 3.5m was getting 0.9 arcsecs and we thought our seeing might improve with another pointing. It didn't and we switched to spectroscopy. Cartridge 3 (plate 827): No guide stars on the gotoField. FK5 found a star but the port was lost (grabbed by SAOimage) while centering it and we had to back out of the problem and start again. We got an error message when doing the preCalib. See the problems section for details. We tried it twice from the sop gui and once from the command line and got the same message every time. It would turn the lamps on but would not take the exposures. We attempted to use a previous version of sop (v3_64_3c) but we were unable to start this version up. Eric Neilsen was called. He fixed the problem in the code but rather than building a new version of sop we just sourced the code that contained the fix. A new version of sop will be built during the day. At this point, the cartridge came into zenith avoidance. However, rather than changing cartridges, we conducted test exposures (doNextScience, smear, postCalib) because Eric had noticed other differences in sop that might have given us problems. Everything tested ok and when the tests were finished, the telescope had crossed the meridian so we went ahead and set up on this plate again. We reacquired the guide stars (lost when we approached the meridian) and let the guider run for 5 minutes to make sure the telescope could track the stars. The guide stars remained centered after 5 minutes and so we proceeded with this plate. When combined with previous data, this plate was finished in one exposure. A good smear was also obtained. Note that the S/N^2 for this plate given on the S-o-S page on 52297 does NOT agree with that given in the plug plate data base. The lowest S/N^2 on the S-o-S page is 13.8 (enough to declare the plate done) while that in the plug plate data base says 12.9. Did the new version of S-o-S re-reduce the data and give a higher value of S/N^2? Cartridge 7 (plate 832): Guide stars found with the aid of an FK5 star. Plate finished in 3 exposures. The postCalib warning appeared after we had already swapped cartridges. The watcher gave multiple warnings that the vdd2 voltage for ccd55 was not correct. A watcher plot of the values shows that this voltage has recently spent a lot of time on the high edge of nominal. Some testing was done on Son-of-Spectro: Using apoplot to plot a spectrum from a plate observered tonight gave the following error: IDL> apoplot, 827, 124 % Compiled module: APOPLOT. % Type conversion error: Unable to convert given STRING to Long64. % Detected at: APOPLOT 370 /local/ups/Linux+2.2/idlspec2d/v4_9_1/pro /apo2d/apoplot.pro Unable to find logfile /data/spectro/spectrologs/00000/logfile-00000.fits We attempted to reassign this PR (2231) but the GNATS page failed to accept the submitted edit three different times saying the document contained no data and to try again later, or contact the server's administrator. We didn't see any scattered light warnings triggered on long exposures (PR 2957; those for plate 333 were probably due to the moon) but we'll wait for more testing before final judgement. We did see a Red Monster in some long exposures. Are these real or is the problem (PR1862) not solved? S-o-S does indeed log in UT now (PR 2946; closed). We were not able to test other S-o-S PRs due to their need of special circumstances and we did not want to spend science time creating these special circumstances. Cartridge 5 (plate 526): Guide stars found with the aid of an FK5 star. When combined with previous data, this plate was done in two exposures. Cartridge 2 (plate 333): Guide stars found on gotoField. We got some good data on this plate but poor seeing prevented us from finishing it. endNight failed. See below: endNight gave us the following message and did not complete. After seeing this message we noticed that the watcher's archiver status indicated that id2 and id3's "archiver position" were at 40 while the other were at 119. "Archiver State" for all drives were Ready and 0, indicating that there was nothing in the que to be archived. The "Tape Drives" section were all in "Ready" states. I believe when I typed "exit" in dsclat window early in the evening, it actually "exited" the two archiver nodes and they never archived. We did a quick look at the DA manual. but could not find how to save these unarchived data to the tapes so we will leave it to the day crew to complete it. Although imaging data are not science quality, the UCAC data should be useful and the data should be useful to check the astroda fix that was put in. im> endNight endNight: Let me ask you some questions right now. endNight: Do you want to ship tapes?
