APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday June 8, 2002 (MJD 52434) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman Steph Snedden Atsuko Nitta - Swing Visitors: Jeff Hayes (CUA) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! -- as if this is not the usual case, but we digress. The plan of action is to obtain imaging, but if there is either a forest fire or some other unusual phenomenon (i.e. another Roswell incident), we will change to spectroscopy. Another action item is the fact that the SDSS project does NOT have a pin which conveys the <> of the project. A "jellyfish" pin was sought by numerous people at the AAS meeting, but sadly there were none to be had. A project pin is a Good Thing, and this lack should be corrected. The HST folk were even giving away trading cards. I can easily envision a series of SDSS collector cards as well: "Dan Long observed 184 sepctroscopic plates in 2002 and imaged 854 sq. degrees on the sky. His totals were significantly less in 2001 (102 and 341, respectively) due to poorer weather..." I would certainly call this as good a Plan as any. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaging!!! We complete the two 34 strips in the plan. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- A few remaining clouds and forecast the same before sunset, so we started with spectroscopy. First up: cart 8, plate 965. About the time we were ready to start setting up on this plate (pre-twilight), the weather got good and all indications were for good seeing. So, we abandoned this plate and mounted the imager- starting first with stripe 34N at lambda=3.5 (good data to start by lambda=10; we were still pre-twilight at this point). We started with a bias, though, while awaiting twilight. We started, still pre-twilight, with donuts for JEG, starting at focus=0; frame 10 is a sample good frame at this focus. We then changed focus to -1000, starting around frame frame 25. (We estimate good focus is around -500 or so.) While getting these donuts, we found the focus changing out from udner us - the focus loop was on, yet we did not knowingly start it! Anyone know what happened here? The focus loop seemed to have started by itself. This was all with run 3222. We got these two out of focus frames for JEG and an in-focus frame from the science run (frame 21) and shoved them all into /data/photo/optics on sdsshost. Actually, /data/photo/optics was getting full, so I mvoed all the stuff there to /disks/d1/jeg on landru. Again, our best focus was about -300 from the "formula". We started the next science run, 3223 at lambda=7.5. But right when we started to converge in our focus, we started de-converging and ended up with stretched out (up and down) oval-shaped donuts instead. Our focus was OK, so it wasn't that. We then noticed that the secondary continued to move even though we had stopped the focus loop! The donut-like images implied the secondary was oscillating, but we don't have direct evidence of this (TPM sleuths?). So, we stopped the drift and went to 70degrees to home the secondary. Before we got started to do the homing, however, the secondary stopped moving on its own. We proceeded to home it, anyhow (and marked this time to telescope hardware problem). At around 04:08Z, we got a false critical error about the imager ion pump pressure. A cc imstat reported it to be 0.18. Once the homing was done, we went back to the field, again starting at lambda=7.5. Now, we had HUGE donnuts. Thinking we may have homed incorrectly, we went back to home again - making sure we had collimate off and all other procedures correct. This homing looked better, so we went off again to the start of our stripe with fingers crossed. This run, 3225, looked better! We were in focus by frame at least by frame 11, lambda~8.5. Seeing was ~1". Skippy reported successul pointing and lambda=10 was reached about frame 21. Rock on! We noticed a couple small, low clouds (or more stationary moths) on the cloud camera around 06:26Z. We noted the imager was doing its contant fill thing again tonight.... While changing the imager dewar during the nigh, we noticed the ODH sensor display was rather bright, so we taped over the display. The skippy-reported nu error for this run started at about 5", then started monotonically decreasing until it reached nearly -8" at the end ofr the scan. tccMon reached lambda=61 around frame 361; we stopped the run at lambda~63 at frame 375; frame 374 was the last good frame. On to 34S, science lambda start=31. We started the scan at lambda=28. (We trimmed 0.5degrees off the nominal starting position because the end of this scan was going to confront twilight and we were pretty sure focus and pointing would be fine from the start.) Focus and pointing were good from the start, so good data start at frame 10, lambda~29. By frame 24, we reached lambda=31. Twilight started around 10:13Z which occurred at frame 227, lambda~61. We reached lambda~63 at frame 237 at 10:20Z and stopped the drift at frame 238. endNight was still running as this log was sent. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor
