APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday September 1, 2002 (MJD 52519) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Pete Newman Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Despite of the paralan weather during the first half of the night, it cleared the second half and we got some science done. We finished two plates (735, 686) and got more exposures on 670. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout went fine. Pete cleaned the ALT drive surfaces which had lots of two dimensional moths on. Cartridge 6 plate 1054 ------------------------ There were data taken on this plate few nights ago during shake. The observers were too busy and didn't notice that there were enough data to declare this plate done. Since it was still with us, we mounted and took a smear. The clouds moved in shortly after we opened. Around 3:50Z, we aquired guide stars, but they go behind clouds in the next exposure. We wait..... We gave up. I declare this plate done since only thing it did not get is a smear. Cartridge 7 Plate 735 -------------------------- We had another go around 6:00Z when the sky looked clear. An FK5 was needed to acquire the field. Just as we started an exposure, the clouds appeared in the cloud camera. The clouds eventually moved away enough so that we could observe and finish this plate. Upon instChange, Atsuko found out that she left the lift handPddle LEDs on. The SoS did not show any "red monster" message. I hope all is well. Sorry. Cartridge 3 PLate 686 --------------------------- We issued two track commands by accident while going to instChange position. This confused MCP and we saw "too large to correct" fiducial crossings in both AZ and ALT when we went to the field. We refiducialized and went to field and found the guide stars. r1 and b1 smears are "red" according to SoS. We saw no wierdness in the smear guider frames. 09:03Z Landru's fan is getting noisier. Cartridge 9 Cartridge 670 ------------------------------ gotoField showed no guide stars. Checking the murmurlog, again, we saw "too large to correct"messages, so we forced fiducials using MCP. We did not bother to go back and cross a fiducial to check. We just accepted the last fiducial correction. Why are we getting these "too large to correct" messages? Is this yet another moth related problem? Although the "optimal observing time" ended at 10:58, we observed this plate passed that since the twilight was only 15min away and we had no time or plate to observe. Some of the exposures got "Max sky-residual" warnings from SoS, probably caused by the moon. We are more than half way done (one or two more exposures needed) with this plate which needs S/N^2>30 to be declared done. When closing Pete noticed LOTS of moth remains on the south ALT drive surface which he has cleaned when we opened. THis probably is why we had "too large to correct fiducial" messages. We had another abort around 20deg when raising the telescope to 30 inside the enclosure. 6 o'clock panel was reponsible for it again. endNight finished successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3318 00:19Z 00:35Z 100 O 55.10 58.90 39 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 16094, plate 670 ------- 00:16 16094 0.0 bias ----- sequence 16095, plate 735 ------- 16.8 17.7 16.4 14.6 06:25 16095 10.0 flat 06:28 16096 2.0 arc 07:28 16097 1200.0 target 07:51 16098 1201.0 target 08:14 16099 1201.0 target 08:22 16100 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16101, plate 686 ------- 17.3 16.0 15.6 17.3 08:49 16101 10.0 flat 08:51 16102 2.0 arc 09:11 16103 900.0 target 09:29 16104 900.0 target 09:52 16105 1201.0 target 10:02 16106 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16107, plate 670 ------- 19.1 19.8 17.4 23.6 10:20 16107 10.0 flat 6.1 5.2 5.8 6.8 from 52519 10:22 16108 2.0 arc ------------------------- 10:47 16109 1202.0 target 25.2 25.0 23.2 30.4 11:06 16110 1001.0 target 11:26 16111 1001.0 target 11:29 16112 10.0 flat 11:32 16113 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:07Z 7 735 -27.59 0.0048 67.80 -0.0005 156.43 0.0000 1.000040 08:54Z 3 686 -13.21 0.0036 56.54 0.0003 168.90 -0.0014 1.000180 10:27Z 9 670 -27.78 0.0029 53.97 0.0009 156.91 0.0056 1.000180 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5495 Stays: JL5496 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:07Z 7 735 1.00004 -394 528 -280 -27 67.8 12.4 7 180 2.2 08:54Z 3 686 1.00018 -1776 -620 -310 -13 56.6 13.5 4 190 1.6 10:27Z 9 670 1.00018 -1776 -613 -310 -28 54.0 13.5 5 264 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:56Z 61 44 6 215 (SW) 579 - 00:44Z 60 43 1 189 (S) 629 - 01:17Z 59 44 6 231 (SW) 638 - 01:49Z 59 44 0 273 (W) 662 - 02:21Z 57 43 9 128 (SE) 658 - 02:54Z 57 42 6 121 (ESE) 789 - 03:26Z 59 42 1 201 (SSW) 751 - 03:58Z 59 42 3 222 (SW) 728 - 04:30Z 59 42 5 203 (SSW) 686 - 05:03Z 56 39 15 134 (SE) 658 - 05:35Z 55 37 13 142 (SE) 620 - 06:07Z 55 37 15 151 (SSE) 566 - 06:41Z 54 37 5 165 (SSE) 649 - 07:11Z 54 36 4 112 (ESE) 692 - 07:44Z 54 37 6 174 (S) 661 - 08:15Z 55 36 4 182 (S) 590 - 08:46Z 56 35 4 193 (SSW) 602 - 09:16Z 56 35 2 218 (SW) 635 - 09:49Z 56 36 5 249 (WSW) 595 - 10:21Z 56 36 4 266 (W) 649 - 10:52Z 55 37 7 213 (SSW) 685 - 11:25Z 55 38 1 237 (WSW) 754 - 11:56Z 55 38 4 280 (W) 725 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Fans on: 00:00 ish Opened 2:30Z Fans off and closed 11:40Z Telescope at stow with cartridge 9 on and autofill connected.
