We finished the oblique scans and did a very long science scan on 82S -162-->126 done. The last few degrees was in moon/twilight, but watcher did not complain. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout went fine. We accidentally called the doghouse bias "bias" instead of "ignore". Sorry Jen. French replaced the Neon lamps because the afternoon checkout arcs was starting to see less lines according to SoS. Started with spectro since the wind direction is from the east and there were some clouds in the northwest. Cartridge 4 plate 1057 ------------------------- We did fk5 to acquire the field. We finished in two exposures. The first two science exposures on r1 got the folowing message, probably due to the exposures taken before twilight was over. Max sky-residual chi2 = 144.362 at 6303.61 Ang (ignoring 5577) The sky was clear and the guider showed that we had seeing between 1.5" to 2.0". So we decided to go imaging after this plate. Oblique Scan ------------- We started the scan ahead of the actual requested oblique scan region so that we have plenty of time to do the setup. NOTE: Typo in the instruction. 1. The instrction says to do a "goStare" instead of a "goDrift". 2. There is no / in front of FK5 when issuing the track command. So the correct command should be: track 310.475, -4.525 FK5 /SCANVELOCITY=(0.0029543432, 0.0029543432) Luckily Dan was driving. It would have taken Atsuko a long time before she figured out that the / in front of FK5 was not needed. Run 3322 Oplique scan part 1 -------------------------------- When Dan started up the focus loop, iop complained about permission on a focus parameter file. The message is in the PROBLEM section. The problem was "fixed" by changing the permission of the file manually. Frame35 focus is good according to the focus loop. We then issued skippy to check the rotator, but no skippy info was returned. Dan later figured out that the skippy by default runs on [run number]=[current run number]-1. So it was trying to do a skippy on a bias run not the current run. We ran ltMatch by hand because we did not get any skippy results to check for the rotator. The first scan is suppose to work with skippy. Frame 22 is good according to ltMatch Skippy finally decided to do skippy and we got auto-skippy results on frame 43. rotator and nuErr are in tolerance, but nuErr is rather large at -14". Sorry Jen. While I was typing the log, I missed exactly which frame it was when we hit RA=308.6, the start of the requested scan. Frame 134 RA320.1, lambda 135.15 ended the drift. Run 3223 Oblique scane part 2 ------------------------------- Five min into the scan, a small clouds in the north horizon showed up in the cloud camera. We pray hard to keep them away. Around 5:50Z, we got the ptvme problem. Dan was kicked out of his iop session. The ptvmeTest messages are in the PROBLEM section. The servers died shortly after Dan lost one of his iop sessions. After couple ptvmeReset and waiting for some time, Dan was able to have a new iop session. He ended the oblique scane drift 10 min after the 40min requested for this scan. BTW, I did not see the usual "no gangs transfer" or "Waiting for command response ..." Watcher messages I am used to seeing when we have ptvme problem although it was clear from the murmur log that the gangs were not getting transferred. It took total of 20 min before we recovered from the ptvme problem. The imager drifted fine while we were having the problem and we lost no data. According to SoKent, the seeing was good for the entire run. Since we saw the thin strip of clouds we saw in the north moving to the west, we decided to take a bias on the scope. The clouds were never in the area we were pointing at according to the cloud camear, but since it is not probably calibrated yet, there is a chance that we missed something. Run 3324 imager on scope bias ------------------------------- Peaceful bias run. We ran Connie's mosaic command on this bias. Run 3325 82S ------------------ There is a typo in the science imaging plan. It says "Local UT time" under "Start-Time-Range" which should be "UT". Frame 24 lambda=162 The nuErr is -15.7 at the start of the run which is rather high but not high enough to stop and restart the run. 08:37Z/Frame218 Dan spots a tiny cloud in the cloudcamera image. They moved across the camera to the west in few min. All of a sudden, we remembered that we forgot to turn the cone fan back on after we turned it off during the instChange. The telescope was equibrated by then that it seems like not having the cone fan did not have any bad effect on our seeing (it is great seeing with sometimes sub"seeing) 08:53Z/Frame 244 Another tiny cloud in the east on the cloud camera. Right below the truss. The cloud headed south and dissipated and gone by 09:10Z. Skippy shows that the nuErr has increased some -- but still under the 18" limit. 10:20Z Landru froze on Atsuko who had the log. Therefore everything between 10:20 and when it was saved before that (about 2hrs before the time Landru crashed) got lost. The skippy, ltmatch, weather info shows two hours gap because of this. I should have saved the log more often. Sorry. I pressed the "reset" button on Landru and so far, it has not come back up. Pinging Landru gets no response. The moon came up 20min before twilight, but we continued on with our scan since Watcher was not complaining about sky background. 11:31Z/Frame508lambda=-125.3 NW corner shows some tiny clouds. We are already in the ramp down range. 11:34Z/Frame512/lambda -124.8 More clouds in the SW corner. 11:36Z/Frame517/lambda -124.1 More clouds! Frame 518 end of the run! We had great seeing throughout this run. endNight is running happily. We are not going to wait until it finishes.
