APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday October 28, 2002 (MJD 52576) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Jurek Krzesinski (APO) Dan Long (APO; swing) Steph Snedden (APO) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Combine shakedown on the sky with science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaging data on 82 S from lambda = -163 to -147 which also qualifies as a UCAC scan. Another UCAC scan was obtained earlier under (mostly) non-photometric conditions (82 S, lambda = +126 to +145). Good data for 1 plate (1064). Tried to get data for another plate (756) but clouds and moon prevented us from getting anything useful. Had another DA problem like the one we had last night. See the PROBLEMS section. iop/sop v3_91_0 was declared current ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Clear at sunset but high humidity delays opening until 0120Z. The sky is photometric so we decide to test the current pointing model by setting up for a science imaging run. We go to 82 S, lambda = +123 and prepare for science imaging. Skippy shows that the pointing is well within tolerances with a mu error = -6" and a nu error = -1". We decide to forgo taking a new pointing model for the moment and proceed with imaging. We get about 50 frames of science quality data (run 3427, 82 S, frames 23 - ~70, lambdas +126 to ~+133) before light clouds move in. We continue the scan in light clouds for another 80 frames to obtain sufficient data for a UCAC scan. The clouds become thicker and we take some donuts (+/- 500 out of focus) before ending the scan. Clouds prevent us from doing anything further on the sky until about 0500Z when it becomes photometric again. We image another stretch of 82 S (run 3430, lambda = -163 to -147) under good conditions until the moon comes up. This scan is science quality and so is probably a better UCAC scan than the one obtained earlier tonight. Pointing for this scan was also well within tolerances (mu error = -8", nu error = +4"). We obtained donuts in good conditions at the end of this scan. They were saved to /data/photo/optics/52576. Details can be found in the Imaging Details section. With the moon on the rise, we switched to spectroscopy. Plate 1064 (cartridge 2): FK5 star used to acquire guide stars. After several science exposures it was noted that the spectrographs appeared to be out of focus (bad xsigma and wsigma values). We retracted and extended the slitheads twice but this didn't help. We then refocused the spectrographs and started again on this plate. We were able to obtain only a single 20 minute exposure before this plate's availability expired. Only the S^N from the in-focus science frame was included in the data base. All the out of focus flats, arcs, science frames and the smear were declared bad using APOFIX. Plate 756 (cartridge 9): FK5 star used to acquire guide stars. We tried a 20 minute exposre and a 30 minute exposure but clouds and moon prevented us from getting S^N2 > 2. There was a DA problem like last night. See the PROBLEMS section for details. Upon shutdown, the grade 2 N2 system appeared dead (all gauges read 0). The pluggers were notified of the problem. iop/sop v3_91_0 was declared current. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3423 22:46Z 23:16Z 100 O 87.91 95.33 62 ignore 3424 01:35Z 01:50Z 100 O 130.14 134.11 40 bias on telescope 3425 01:57Z 02:01Z 82 S 122.81 123.69 20 ignore 3426 02:03Z 02:06Z 82 S 123.38 123.97 18 ignore 3427 02:08Z 03:54Z 82 S 123.59 150.04 190 science non phot. Useful for a UCAC scan. Conditions good enough for science from frames 23 to ~70 (lambda +126 to +133). After frame ~70 it was not photometric. Initially, there were light clouds that were not visible to the eye (cloud camera sigma occasionally jumped above 10 to values of 35 - 50) but later the clouds became thicker. This scan should still be useful as a UCAC scan though. We also took some donuts in non-photometric conditions in an attempt to check the mirror collimation. However, the clouds and seeing may have rendered these useless. Donuts taken between frame 150 and the end. 150 in focus 161 -500 166 +500 We used +/- 500 because the donuts at +/- 300 were not very pronounced. This was probably due to sky conditions (clouds, seeing). 3430: 82 S from lambda = -163 to -147. Science quality. Also a UCAC scan. Science from frames 13 to 124 (lambda = -163 to -147). Marginal seeing for the first 20 or so frames. Good seeing after that. At this point we noticed that all the overflow lights on both photo crates and the astro crate were lit. This appears to be the same problem that we had last night. Indeed, a ptvmeTest command froze the window as well (like it did last night). We rebooted all 3 crates and tried a ptvmeTest but it hung the window. We rebooted them again and the same thing happened. Next, we restarted the servers but one of them died. Then, we started logging out of iop sessions and tried another ptvmeTest and it worked. Then we did a ptvmeReset and restarted the servers and things came back up ok? Last night we rebooted host (as instructed) to brings things back up. We started endNight writing all data (imaging, spectro, gangs, tpm, etc.) and it appears to be running. However, we now have archiver problems. We get the following message from the watcher: archUseDrv (drive 2: archUseDrv is 0: 2002-10-29 12:32:24Z) Furthermore, the real time archiver window shows that none of the tape drives for 1d1, id3-id6 are mounted while that for id2 shows "NoInit". The state of all drives except id2 says "Ready" while that for id2 shows "InitPen".
