APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday October 31, 2002 (MJD 52579) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Steph Snedden Swingin' Dan Long Halloween ghosts & goblins: Jackie Diehl (NSO) Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski Judy Stanley (LodeStar/APS) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! Clouds indicate we start with spectroscopy. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Partly cloudy, then mostly cloudy. We got partial data on three plates, but finished none. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: During afternoon checkout Dan couldn't initialize the axes. A look at the interlocks display showed the instrument lift was up. Dan estimates it was only raised 1/8 - 1/4 inch. So, some time between closing in the mornning and opening tonight, it moved slightly. Smokey the Atsuko spotted a smoke at 240 degrees magnetic about 2 miles away past Westside road. It was small (about tree sized), and the smoke died down as we watched. We called Fire Dispatch to see if there were any prescribed burns, but no. Our best guess is that it was a camper dealing with wet wood with a lot of gasoline and without the skills of Mark Trail. We kept an eye on the area through the night, anyway. We started the night with spectroscopy, given the high clouds. Cartridge 4, plate 1036 Stars in fibers on slew. Clouds kept us from finishing this high S/N plate, though we made good progress on it. We did not do a smear, as conditions were not good enough. This plate is almst done. Cartridge 7, plate 1143 Had to use an FK5 to find the field. Mostly this was a battle with clouds, which we eventually lost. Some useable signal, but the plate is not finished. Cartridge 8, plate 1155 Still dealing with clouds. Needed an FK5 to find the field, although this was because the pointing was slightly off, not because of the clouds. While collecting the brave photons that didn't get caught by the clouds, Atsuko's saoImage window disappeared --- without any error message. The telescope went on guiding and SOP continued on as if nothing had happened. Atsuko stopped the guider and paused the exposure while she had no saoImage. Issuing "startMon" did nothing. We remembered that we have had this happen before and we have a folklore on what to do. Atsuko followed the folklore procedure "If guider monitor (fsaoImage) blows up on you..." and killed netscape and did a "startMon" followed by "showGuiderFrame" and we were back in business. This happened twice more to Atsuko. Finally she quit Netscape in disgust. This solved the problem. She was running from landru on monx1. 07:30Z Visited by ghosts & goblins. We overcame our fear, especially since they brought food. 08:03Z The clouds finally forced us to halt, although we stayed open. We got useable signal on plate 1155, but yet again could not declare it done. 09:45Z Still cloudy. Looks like there is fog in the basin. We are watching conditions carefully. We put on cartridge 9, plate 985, hoping for a break in the weather. No such luck.
