APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday November 5, 2002 (MJD 52584) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Dan Long (APO; swing) Scot Kleinman (APO; in person and by phone) Steve Kent (FNAL; by phone) Connie Rockosi (UW; by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Most likely Apache Wheel then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished Apache Wheel for this section of the sky except for missing spoke 315. Attempted science imaging but seeing was too poor. One plate finished (891) and good data obtained for another two plates (805, 896). Photometric all night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Landru needed rebooting this afternoon. Its xsession was unresponsive. Clear at sunset. We begin with imaging but seeing dictates we do Apache Wheel. We do a normal binned, normal rate scan to set the focus. We then do a binned bias on the telescope. Our first attempt at a rim scan is aborted because the autoscale didn't allow us to see stars. So, for Apache Wheel, the scrolling display must be set to the original scale settings *before* issuing goDrift (setSCDDisplayFromFlavor old). We get a rim scan from +305 degrees to +5 degrees. Then we begin the spoke scans. We originally intended for spoke 315 to be our first spoke but its airmass was too high. So, we scan spoke 330 first and then continue with spoke 345 and spoke 0. We do another rim scan, this time from +350 degrees to +50 degrees, and then proceed to scan spokes 15, 30 and 45. Note that since these (and all) southern spokes do not go above +25 degrees declination, we could observe spokes east of the meridian without fear or them passing through zenith. Except for missing spoke 315, these scans should complete the Apache Wheel section for this part of the sky. Note that the 3.5m reported an improvement in seeing when we were about halfway through the scans and the wind direction became more favorable to us shortly thereafter so we may have sacrificed some science imaging (repeat scans of 82 N and S) to complete this portion of Apache Wheel. Note that ccd51 had a VS- error throughout the Apache Wheel scans. This was a transient error for the binned bias but it was continuous throughout all the other binned scans. The nominal range is -5 +/- 0.25 and the operating value was -1.4. Is this a real problem or does the tolerance for this situation need adjusting? After finishing Apache Wheel, we did a normal (unbinned) bias on the telescope and then attempted to image some of 82 S. On the first attempt, both scanStripe and goDrift yielded error messages and skippy would not work on the scan. See the PROBLEMS section for details. On the second attempt, scanStripe gave the same error message but goDrift and skippy worked fine. This second scan was spoiled by poor seeing. We switched to spectroscopy because the seeing was poor and the wind had switched back to an unfavorable direction making it unlikely the seeing would improve. Plate 805 (cartridge 1): Offsets were cleared and there were guide stars on the gotoField. Seeing was poor (2.5 - 4") but usable data were still obtained in two 20 minute exposures and the smear was finished. Plate 891 (cartridge 5): Offsets were cleared and there were some guide stars on the gotoField. Seeing improved during this plate (~2.5 - 1.8") and it was finished in three 20 minute exposures. Plate 896 (cartridge 9): FK5 star found after some effort (off +10" in RA and -10" in dec). One good 20 minute exposure obtained before the sky became too bright. It was photometric all night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3444 22:37Z 22:55Z 100 O 93.52 97.95 43 ignore doghouse bias 3445 01:07Z 01:37Z 82 O 130.40 137.98 65 ignore focus setup 3446 01:42Z 01:59Z 100 O 139.85 144.08 26 bias binned bias 3447 02:03Z 02:06Z 100 O 145.06 145.94 17 ignore autoscale was on; needs to be off 3448 02:08Z 02:44Z 100 O 146.42 155.33 39 calibration rim scan +305 to +5 3449 02:48Z 03:14Z 100 O 156.34 162.94 32 calibration spoke 330 3450 03:18Z 03:45Z 100 O 164.03 170.82 33 calibration spoke 345 3451 03:48Z 04:18Z 100 O 171.52 -180.90 35 calibration spoke 0 3452 04:22Z 04:59Z 100 O -179.99 -170.69 40 calibration rim scan +350 to +50 3453 05:03Z 05:33Z 100 O -169.79 -162.31 35 calibration spoke 15 3454 05:37Z 06:05Z 100 O -161.27 -154.17 34 calibration spoke 30 3455 06:08Z 06:39Z 100 O -153.39 -145.55 36 calibration spoke 45 3456 06:49Z 07:04Z 100 O -143.16 -139.52 38 bias normal bias on telescope 3457 07:06Z 07:32Z 82 S -10184.00 -155.23 56 ignore skippy failing 3458 07:47Z 08:16Z 82 S -146.57 -139.11 63 ignore bad seeing ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3445 - Establishing focus for Apache Wheel scans. Run 3446 - Binned bias on telescope. Run 3447 - Rim scan aborted because the autoscale didn't allow us to see stars. So, for Apache Wheel, the scrolling display must be set to the original scale settings *before* issuing goDrift (setSCDDisplayFromFlavor old). Run 3448 - Rim scan from +305 degrees to +5 degrees. Airmass ranged from 1.19 to 1.32. Run 3449 - Spoke 330. Starting airmass = 1.84. Ending airmass = 1.06. Scanned northwards. We wanted to start with Spoke 315 but its airmass was too high. Run 3450 - Spoke 345. Starting airmass = 1.06. Ending airmass = 1.88. Scanned southwards. Run 3451 - Spoke 0. Starting airmass = 1.88. Ending airmass = 1.02. Scanned northwards. Run 3452 - Rim scan from +350 to +50. Airmass ranged from 1.19 to 1.47. Run 3453 - Spoke 15. Starting airmass = 1.94. Ending airmass = 1.02. Scanned northwards. Run 3454 - Spoke 30. The telescope was still moving when the shutter opened. We let this scan run a little long accidentally (scanned to dec=+25 instead of dec=+20). Run 3456 - Normal (unbinned) bias on the telescope. Run 3457 - Attempt at 82 S. Error messages from scanStripe and then from goDrift. Skippy wouldn't work on this scan either. Note that this was the first on-sky scan after Apache Wheel, although a bias had worked fine. This scan was accidentally flavored as science but it should be ignore. Run 3458 - Another attempt at 82 S. Error message again from scanStripe but this time goDrift and skippy worked without problem. Bad seeing thwarted this attempt. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3445 23 4 122 -6.000 0.189 -15.000 0.582 0.00311 181 57 3445 43 4 106 0.000 0.179 -3.100 0.167 -0.00794 181 57 3458 17 4 71 1.200 0.112 -0.900 0.136 -0.01288 211 53 3458 17 4 71 1.200 0.112 -0.900 0.136 -0.01288 211 53 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3457 20 1 51 322 15 -0.983 0.162 2.651 0.417 -0.00891 3457 20 1 51 322 21 -1.012 0.130 2.753 0.290 -0.00926 3457 20 1 51 322 8 -1.187 0.104 2.444 0.149 -0.00822 3457 20 1 51 322 13 -1.209 0.160 2.755 0.443 -0.00926 3457 20 1 51 322 14 -1.150 0.125 2.663 0.308 -0.00895 3457 20 1 51 322 17 -1.016 0.217 2.885 0.188 -0.00970 3457 20 1 51 322 9 -1.013 0.223 2.706 0.207 -0.00910 3457 20 1 51 322 13 -1.041 0.249 2.616 0.207 -0.00880 3457 20 1 51 322 14 -1.180 0.144 2.669 0.229 -0.00898 3457 20 1 51 322 12 -1.222 0.232 2.502 0.238 -0.00841 3457 37 1 51 322 24 -0.415 0.422 3.156 0.419 -0.01061 3457 37 1 51 322 10 -0.347 0.401 3.165 0.427 -0.01064 3457 37 1 51 322 13 -0.349 0.353 3.114 0.337 -0.01047 3457 37 1 51 322 12 -0.406 0.322 3.248 0.268 -0.01092 3457 37 1 51 322 19 -0.221 0.440 3.244 0.242 -0.01090 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:40 16835 0.0 bias ----- sequence 16836, plate 805 ------- 9.6 6.7 9.5 6.8 08:52 16836 10.0 flat 08:55 16837 2.0 arc 09:22 16838 1200.1 target 09:44 16839 1200.1 target 09:52 16840 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16841, plate 891 ------- 28.7 16.4 23.1 16.4 DONE 10:11 16841 10.0 flat 10:13 16842 2.0 arc 10:38 16843 1200.1 target 11:01 16844 1200.1 target 11:23 16845 1200.1 target 11:34 16846 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16847, plate 896 ------- 9.4 4.4 8.1 5.8 11:56 16847 10.0 flat 11:58 16848 2.0 arc 12:23 16849 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 09:02Z 1 805 -38.83 0.0017 50.43 0.0013 148.13 0.0006 1.000080 10:17Z 5 891 100.54 -0.0037 67.82 -0.0005 -94.32 -0.0099 1.000230 12:01Z 9 896 142.19 -0.0175 76.44 -0.0006 -44.80 -0.0036 1.000230 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5651 - 5656, 5672 Stays: JL5657 - 5662, 5673 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 09:01Z 1 805 1.00008 -789 455 -70 -38 50.6 2.5 9 37 ---- 3.5" 10:16Z 5 891 1.00023 -2270 -874 -130 101 67.7 4.3 2 17 ---- 2.2" 12:00Z 9 896 1.00023 -2270 -858 -100 142 76.3 2.9 8 354 ---- 1.7" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:04Z 38 12 6 15 (NNE) 92 - clear 23:35Z 40 8 6 80 (E) 81 - " 00:05Z 38 7 11 61 (ENE) 65 - " 00:37Z 39 1 11 49 (NE) 76 - " 01:07Z 37 4 8 64 (ENE) 70 - " 01:38Z 38 5 8 47 (NE) 92 - " 02:09Z 38 6 1 270 (W) 96 - " 02:42Z 36 8 5 342 (NNW) 124 - " 03:14Z 34 5 3 354 (NNW) 54 - " 03:46Z 36 2 3 262 (W) 70 - " 04:18Z 32 3 10 22 (NNE) 58 - " 04:50Z 35 -1 13 7 (N) 46 - " 05:23Z 36 3 6 349 (NNW) 74 - " 05:55Z 36 4 6 345 (NNW) 59 - " 06:27Z 35 5 6 196 (SSW) 89 - " 07:00Z 35 8 8 4 (N) 77 - " 07:32Z 35 8 7 201 (SSW) 97 - " 08:04Z 36 6 14 49 (NE) 63 - " 08:37Z 35 7 14 32 (NNE) 71 - " 09:08Z 38 4 6 35 (NE) 63 - " 09:39Z 39 -2 0 4 (N) 51 - " 10:09Z 37 4 6 21 (NNE) 52 - " 10:42Z 37 2 5 359 (NNW) 44 - " 11:14Z 36 5 10 354 (NNW) 96 - " 11:46Z 36 4 7 8 (N) 95 - " 12:18Z 38 2 0 270 (W) 82 - " 12:50Z 40 -4 3 253 (WSW) 29 - ? ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:30 Doors open, fans on 00:45 Enclosure off 12:30 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off.
