APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday November 24, 2002 (MJD 52603) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Jurek Krzesinski Steph Snedden Swing: Mike Harvanek Support: Robert Lupton (PU) Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown night 1. Pointing model has high priority. Robert continues to debug MCP. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- New pointing model implemented. We have UCAC coverage for this dark run. Robert fixed many MCP bugs. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: Sir Robert the Lupton continued work on MCP issues. By sunset, he was working on the flat-field screen Hartmann mask code, which seemed to be working. It needs a procedure before we start using it. On a separate issue, the MCP did start failing in an ungraceful way (freezing), which was difficult to troubleshoot from VXWorks, since it doesn't dump anything to a file in these cases. Robert had to just keep issuing cmdShow commands and waiting for the MCP to choke, in hopes of seeing the problem in real time. It may be a problem with corrupted memory, but is hard to track down. Robert will have to report the details on this. We kept on shaking MCP until 05:00Z, at which time we started a pointing model. Swing shift shake tasks were squeezed in around Robert's work. Here is Mike's summary: ---------- The PT flat field lamp was supposedly changed by the engineering crew (email notification) but there was no entry in the PT hardware log indicating this. All DA tape drives were cleaned (both drives for each of id1-6, both spectro drives, the PT drive and the spare drive). Spectro Monthly Checkout was completed (mjd=52602). Although the spectrographs were collimated late in the evening with the telescope in thermal equilibrium, the air temp was still between 6 and 7 C and so they will probably need to be recollimated when the cold weather returns. Dithered flats and associated arcs were obtained (frames 17062-17070) as were 25 biases (frames 17071-17095) and 3 darks (frames 17096-17098). Visual inspection of the biases showed nothing unusual and their histograms all looked normal. The histograms from the darks looked normal as well (for darks). The percentiles for the darks are given below: Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00017096.fit 2.2 4.5 6.7 13.5 21.4 23.7 26.0 sdR-b1-00017096.fit 2.2 4.5 6.7 13.5 21.4 23.7 26.0 sdR-b2-00017096.fit -4.9 -3.1 -1.0 6.1 13.6 15.4 18.0 sdR-b2-00017096.fit -4.9 -3.1 -1.0 6.1 13.6 15.4 18.0 sdR-r1-00017096.fit 0.9 3.5 4.9 12.7 19.9 21.9 24.9 sdR-r1-00017096.fit 0.9 3.5 4.9 12.7 19.9 21.9 24.9 sdR-r2-00017096.fit -5.2 -3.2 -1.2 4.1 10.8 12.5 15.6 sdR-r2-00017096.fit -5.2 -3.2 -1.2 4.1 10.8 12.5 15.6 Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00017097.fit 2.1 4.4 6.6 13.4 21.3 23.6 25.9 sdR-b1-00017097.fit 2.1 4.4 6.6 13.4 21.3 23.6 25.9 sdR-b2-00017097.fit -5.0 -2.7 -1.1 6.5 13.5 15.8 18.4 sdR-b2-00017097.fit -5.0 -2.7 -1.1 6.5 13.5 15.8 18.4 sdR-r1-00017097.fit 0.9 3.5 4.9 11.9 19.9 21.9 24.9 sdR-r1-00017097.fit 0.9 3.5 4.9 11.9 19.9 21.9 24.9 sdR-r2-00017097.fit -4.7 -3.5 -1.6 4.5 10.5 12.5 14.5 sdR-r2-00017097.fit -4.7 -3.5 -1.6 4.5 10.5 12.5 14.5 Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00017098.fit 2.1 4.4 6.5 13.4 21.2 23.4 25.9 sdR-b1-00017098.fit 2.1 4.4 6.5 13.4 21.2 23.4 25.9 sdR-b2-00017098.fit -4.4 -2.9 -0.4 6.2 13.0 15.6 18.3 sdR-b2-00017098.fit -4.4 -2.9 -0.4 6.2 13.0 15.6 18.3 sdR-r1-00017098.fit 0.9 3.4 4.9 11.9 19.9 21.9 24.9 sdR-r1-00017098.fit 0.9 3.4 4.9 11.9 19.9 21.9 24.9 sdR-r2-00017098.fit -5.3 -3.2 -1.6 4.2 10.5 12.6 14.7 sdR-r2-00017098.fit -5.3 -3.2 -1.6 4.2 10.5 12.6 14.7 According to the Spectro Monthly Checkout procedures page, for darks, the 98-th percentile as reported by Son-of-Spectro should be less than about 15 ADU. These changes were incorporated into the new version of mcp built by RHL and SJK. Note, however, that the data were collected at an air temp of about 9.5 C (no fault of the day staff as it has been unseasonably warm) and so pointing may get bad when the weather turns cold. ---------- Night shift: Homed and relaxed mirrors. Refer to the PRs that RHL filed. Most time was spent on troubleshooting a very old bug that was in the routine cmdShow. It turns out we don't use that code, but at the time, we did not know where the bug was. It turns out it was not a problem with corrupted memory after all. Robert fixed the bug. 09:35Z Mounted the imager for collimation checks and a UCAC scan on the equator (stripe 10 O). At this time we (re)discovered a couple of IOP bugs. See the problems section. The data was in focus, with Skippy in spec by frame 44 lambda=-73, but really the data should be good from frame 14, lambda -78. Ended the drift at 11:35Z, frame 166, lambda=-54. There are some collimation check donuts follwing this which can be ignored. 11:37Z Collimation check with imager mounted showed the donuts to be very much like those from last month...good. No collimation adjustments were made. sdssProcedures: The three changes that were made were verified to exist in the latest sdssProcedures. However, we note that the fiducial-building process is completely different now, and needs a new procedure. One can now check in fiducial tables without having to check in a new MCP version!
