APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday February 1, 2003 (MJD 52672) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Pete Newman Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Good spectroscopic night. Thin clouds came by all night and the seeing was 1,5-1.7". We finished 8 plates(Plate 810, 1207, 1208, 934, 1202, 1217, 1018, 1230) and half way done with 9th one. Today is Atsuko's 3rd yr Anniversary at APO. Gourmet dinner menu --------------------- Buffalo Swedish meat balls with egg noodles. Chicken mole with rice. Chicken tacos. Black Forest cake with ice cream. Cookies. Dark roasted Kona coffee. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We start with spectro since we have much cirrus above us. We added air on the lindy cart tires before sunset. There is no swing shift support over weekends and we did not have time to run collimate command, but checked that the SoS reports the collimations are ok on preClaib frames taken in twilight. Cartridge 1 Plate 810 ----------------------- No stars on gotoStars but Pete guesstimated the offsets and found the guide stars. 01:24Z Focused (1.4"), scaled. We are ready to go and waiting for the sky to get darker. The air temperature started to rise slightly as we observed this plate and we adjusted the focus to compensate for that. Cloudcamera reported that the sky is getting more photometric and standard dev. hovered around 10.0 , right at our threshold for calling the sky photomertic. The seeing was quite stable. We got required s/n in 4 exposures. SoS asked for postCalib. We are seeing ribbon of clouds pass by in the cloud camera. We stick to spectro. Cartridge 2 Pltae 1207 ------------------------ start on gotoField. Seeing is still around 1.5". The seeing seems to be stable and slightly improving. Done in 3 exposures. Cartridge 3 Plate 1208 ------------------------- stars on gotoField. Seeing is around 1.7" and the wind is getting a bit stronger. We tried running "startDa -scd" in sop to try some different display modes. The command brought up a GUI window with buttons, similar to the panel for the imaging data. We tried 2x2 binning mode without success. All we got was a blue screen, no frames were displayed. We tried going back to the original display, now all we get is a blue display. We found out once we mess with it, we cannot get any data displayed. The above command seem not to work. Since we are in the middle of the night and taking good data according to SoS, we decided not to reboot spectro crate to try to fix the display. We will do so after we stpo observing in the morning. A PR was filed. Cartridge 4 Plate 934 ------------------------ starts on gotoField. Seeing is better on this cartridge. We came close to zenith, 2.5deg away, but the telescope behaved well, guide stars were in their positions and we were able to take data without pausing our exposure. Done in 3 exposures. Cartridge 5 Plate 1202 ---------------------- We had to use fk5 star to find the field. The fk5 was offset in ra for 2" and dec for 10" after we cleared offsets from the previous plates. Done in three exposures. Both r1 and r2 got very low S/N in smear. b1 got yellow number and b2 got black number. Cartridge 6 Plate 1217 ----------------------- Stars on gotoField. This plate position is similar to the last plate. Done in the 3 exposures. Cartridge 7 Plate 1018 ------------------------ This plate only neede one exposure to finish. Cartridge 8 Plate 1230 ------------------------- We needed to do offset of 7" in RA and 4" in DEC to find the field. Pete can guestimate the offsets very well when we don't see the stars on gotoField. Catridge 9 Plate 1038 ----------------------- We needed to go to fk5 to find the guide stars. We have about 30min before the twilight starts. We are racing with time to get this plate done. We decided to take three science exposures first and then take calib in twilight so that we can maximize the time we can take science data. Unfortunately, more clouds started to come and we did not get as good as S/N as the others and we could not finish this plate. Sigh. endNight rejoiced. We rebooted the spectro crate after endNight to see if that will fix our display. It did. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3651 23:52Z 00:10Z 100 O -160.95 -156.43 44 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 19006, plate -9999 ------- 23:52 19006 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19007, plate 810 ------- 40.9 41.0 42.9 54.8 00:54 19007 10.0 flat 00:56 19008 2.0 arc 01:36 19009 10.0 flat 01:39 19010 2.0 arc 01:59 19011 900.1 target 02:17 19012 900.1 target 02:35 19013 900.1 target 02:53 19014 900.1 target 03:11 19015 900.1 target 03:35 19016 900.1 target 03:39 19017 10.0 flat 03:41 19018 2.0 arc 03:50 19019 240.0 smear ------sequence 19020, aPlate 1207 ------ 23.2 30.5 24.6 26.5 04:08 19020 10.0 flat 04:10 19021 2.0 arc 04:30 19022 900.1 target 04:48 19023 900.1 target 05:02 19024 700.1 target 05:10 19025 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19026, plate 1208 ------- 18.0 21.0 18.9 19.4 05:33 19026 10.0 flat 05:35 19027 2.0 arc 05:54 19028 800.1 target 06:10 19029 700.1 target 06:24 19030 700.1 target 06:32 19031 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19032, plate 934 ------- 18.0 19.0 15.7 17.2 06:50 19032 10.0 flat 06:52 19033 2.0 arc 07:08 19034 700.1 target 07:23 19035 700.1 target 07:38 19036 700.1 target 07:45 19037 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19038, plate 1202 ------- 18.8 17.1 17.6 15.0 08:06 19038 10.0 flat 08:08 19039 2.0 arc 08:24 19040 700.1 target 08:38 19041 700.1 target 08:57 19042 900.1 target 09:05 19043 240.0 smear <--- Both r has bad smear. ----- sequence 19044, plate 1217 ------- 23.9 20.5 21.5 23.3 09:21 19044 10.0 flat 09:24 19045 2.0 arc 09:41 19046 800.1 target 09:56 19047 700.1 target 10:11 19048 700.1 target 10:19 19049 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19050, plate 1018 ------- 5.3 4.7 5.7 4.5 10:33 19050 10.0 flat 19.2 13.2 18.8 13.8 from 52760 10:35 19051 2.0 arc ---------------------- 24.5 17.9 24.5 18.3 10:53 19052 700.1 target ----- sequence 19053, plate 1230 ------- 22.3 21.0 17.4 18.8 11:07 19053 10.0 flat 11:09 19054 2.0 arc 11:25 19055 700.1 target 11:40 19056 700.1 target 11:55 19057 700.1 target 12:03 19058 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19059, plate 1038 ------- 6.9 6.1 5.6 5.7 12:30 19059 700.1 target 12:44 19060 700.1 target 12:59 19061 700.1 target 13:06 19062 240.0 smear <--- bad 13:10 19063 10.0 flat 13:12 19064 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:43Z 1 810 3.14 0.0033 57.20 0.0010 182.60 0.0096 1.000090 04:13Z 2 1207 93.56 0.0039 58.60 0.0025 254.16 0.0006 1.000200 05:52Z 3 1208 84.57 0.0039 77.94 0.0012 257.14 0.0172 1.000170 06:57Z 4 934 158.83 -0.0180 87.02 0.0019 -21.92 0.0268 1.000050 08:13Z 5 1202 193.93 -0.0038 77.23 0.0036 16.61 -0.0224 1.000180 09:26Z 6 1217 231.83 -0.0040 73.18 0.0041 62.68 -0.0026 1.000210 10:43Z 7 1018 188.35 -0.0026 67.41 0.0034 12.27 -0.0134 1.000210 11:15Z 8 1230 -26.07 0.0036 65.05 0.0026 157.89 -0.0075 1.000210 12:17Z 9 1038 205.50 -0.0012 64.27 0.0031 38.86 0.0053 0.999940 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5998 Stays: JL6000 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:43Z 1 810 1.00009 -888 314 -110 3 57.2 5.9 5 265 gdr 1.5 02:11Z 1 810 1.00009 -888 285 -140 -10 56.8 6.6 10 270 gdr 1.5 04:13Z 2 1207 1.00020 -1974 -639 -160 94 58.7 6.4 15 270 gdr 1.5 05:52Z 3 1208 1.00017 -1678 -529 -260 85 78.0 6.7 18 289 gdr 1.7 06:56Z 4 934 1.00005 -493 521 -185 157 87.0 6.4 15 270 gdr 1.3 08:13Z 5 1202 1.00018 -1776 -530 -180 194 77.2 5.4 22 267 gdr 1.4 09:26Z 6 1217 1.00021 -2073 -720 -130 232 73.2 5.3 19 258 gdr 1.7 10:42Z 7 1018 1.00021 -2073 -781 -200 188 67.4 5.6 22 269 gdr 1.7 11:05Z 8 1230 1.00021 -2073 -748 -170 -20 65.9 5.4 20 262 gdr 1.5 12:16Z 9 1038 0.99994 591 1463 -170 205 64.3 4.8 22 248 gdr 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:28Z 47 11 9 263 (W) 296 -
