APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday March 4, 2003 (MJD 52703) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski - day Dan Long Scot Kleinman Visitors: Howard Brewington Hogg Schlegel ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- DATA DATA DATA DATA DATA DATA DATA! The big WOOHOO for data: WOOHOO! Passing clouds kept us spectroing, but we finished 7 full plates. This means we took over 20 times the number of exposures we have in the run so far. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: DAs -ok, spectro guider - ok, MIGs -ok, Spectrograph focus - focused (see the problem section for details). (wsigma was yellow much of the night, though) Night: ------ High winds started the evening with clear skies, but winds quickly diminished to just below closing levels and we were ABLE TO OPEN before twilight!!! Cart 2 plate 1199 up first. GSOTGTF. Done in 3 exposures - next up cart 3 plate 1212. During instChange Dan's SOP hung up due to tccPutAndWait. Dan says this happens EVERY time he does a gotoField, although sometimes it comes back sooner than others. This time, it took about 10 minutes for his SOP session to come back. In investigating this, we fund that tccPutAndWait's default timeout is 600seconds "to allow for long slews" although Dan says the longest possible slew is 3 minutes. We filed a PR. See problems. In the meantime, we ran with a hacked version of instChange which used tccPut instead of tccPutAndWait for the instChange slew to 121,90. GSOTGTF and done in three exposures (in less than 45m total). Next: cart 4 plate 942: GSOTGTF. We finished this plate in three 12 minute exposures. On to cart 5 plate 1194. We needed an fk5 star for this plate, which was easily found. After starting the science exposure, Dan started up the guider and the first two frames showed no stars, but the third frame magically had stars. All indications were no clouds and open FFS petals, so we can't explain what happened here. Finished in 36m of exposure and a postCalib. Next cart 6 plate 1005. GSOTGTF. Finished in 36m of exposure. Next cart 7 plate 1161. Here again we needed an fk5 star (which was outside the fiber, although a dimmer star was near the center of fiber 11!). In both this plate and the last 2, it took a couple frames to get guide stars to appear in the guider frame. Clouds came in more seriously during this plate and we had to up our exposures to 900s each (gasp)! We needed postCalibs here. Next cart 8 plate 1165. GSOTGTF. Done in 3 exposures. Next cart 9 plate 1039. GSOTGTF. But we didn't get any exposures due to high winds, clouds, humidity and twilight... During spectro QA, we noticed the following fiber which get incomplete spectral coverage. This repeated across multiple plates, so we suspect this is just due to bad parts of the CCDs. Is there a complete list of such bad fibers someplace?: 98 - 100 145 - 147 248 - 250 305 - 307 317 - 318 374 - 377 490 - 491 543 - 546 582 638 - 640 endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3694 22:52Z 23:07Z 100 O -145.51 -141.80 39 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 19593, plate -9999 ------- 22:51 19593 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19594, plate 1199 ------- 23:09 19594 0.0 bias 23:30 19595 0.0 bias 23:35 19596 10.0 flat 23:38 19597 2.0 arc 23:41 19598 2.1 arc 23:43 19599 2.1 arc 00:13 19600 2.1 arc 00:16 19601 2.1 arc 00:25 19602 2.1 arc 00:27 19603 2.1 arc 00:38 19604 2.1 arc 00:41 19605 2.1 arc 00:54 19606 0.0 bias 02:23 19607 10.0 flat 02:25 19608 2.0 arc 02:43 19609 900.1 target 03:04 19610 1100.1 target 03:23 19611 900.1 target 03:31 19612 240.0 smear 03:34 19613 10.0 flat 03:36 19614 2.0 arc ----- sequence 19615, plate 1212 ------- 04:07 19615 10.0 flat 04:09 19616 2.0 arc 04:28 19617 900.1 target 04:44 19618 800.1 target 04:59 19619 720.1 target 05:07 19620 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19621, plate 942 ------- 05:23 19621 10.0 flat 05:25 19622 2.0 arc 05:41 19623 720.1 target 05:56 19624 720.1 target 06:11 19625 720.1 target 06:19 19626 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19627, plate 1194 ------- 06:35 19627 10.0 flat 06:38 19628 2.0 arc 06:56 19629 720.1 target 07:11 19630 720.1 target 07:26 19631 720.1 target 07:34 19632 240.0 smear 07:37 19633 10.0 flat 07:39 19634 2.0 arc ----- sequence 19635, plate 1005 ------- 07:54 19635 10.0 flat 07:56 19636 2.0 arc 08:13 19637 720.1 target 08:28 19638 720.1 target 08:43 19639 720.1 target 08:52 19640 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19641, plate 1161 ------- 09:11 19641 10.0 flat 09:14 19642 2.0 arc 09:33 19643 900.1 target 09:51 19644 900.1 target 10:11 19645 1000.1 target 10:20 19646 240.0 smear 10:23 19647 10.0 flat 10:25 19648 2.0 arc ----- sequence 19649, plate 1165 ------- 10:36 19649 10.0 flat 10:38 19650 2.0 arc 10:57 19651 800.1 target 11:15 19652 900.1 target 11:31 19653 800.1 target 11:39 19654 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19655, plate 1039 ------- 11:55 19655 10.0 flat 11:57 19656 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:28Z 2 1199 114.05 0.0024 56.24 -0.0017 -91.21 0.0047 1.000270 03:19Z 2 1199 115.30 0.0024 65.99 -0.0017 -81.91 0.0047 1.000150 04:23Z 3 1212 109.51 -0.0006 77.42 -0.0024 -78.85 0.0063 1.000210 05:29Z 4 942 147.26 -0.0053 75.87 -0.0029 -39.40 -0.0097 0.999990 06:51Z 5 1194 -41.55 0.0038 57.40 0.0000 145.77 -0.0139 1.000060 07:51Z 6 1005 224.53 -0.0027 64.19 0.0006 62.68 -0.0047 0.999890 09:22Z 7 1161 155.20 -0.0027 63.25 -0.0027 -38.88 0.0000 0.999950 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:28Z 2 1199 1.00027 -2665 -819 225 114 56.3 -0.8 17 267 gdr 1.9 03:19Z 2 1199 1.00015 -1480 -17 70 115 66.0 -0.9 20 263 gdr 1.8 04:23Z 3 1212 1.00021 -2073 -585 10 110 77.4 -1.1 19 253 gdr 1.7 05:29Z 4 942 0.99999 99 1214 10 147 75.9 -2.3 15 265 gdr 1.7 06:51Z 5 1194 1.00006 -591 678 10 -41 57.4 -3.1 13 286 gdr 1.5 07:52Z 6 1005 0.99989 1085 2081 40 225 64.2 -3.6 18 270 gdr 1.5 09:22Z 7 1161 0.99995 493 1553 0 155 63.3 -4.0 19 272 gdr 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:42Z 35 15 30 260 (W) 533 -
