APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday March 5, 2003 (MJD 52704) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: Pete Newman Dan Long Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Cloud delay until 06:00Z. Imaging after that! At least 3 hours worth. Run 3698: 29 S Good between lambda -24 and 2 Run 3699: 29 S Good/Acceptable between lambda 11 and 33 Need Steve Kent's input on whether 3699 is acceptable from the start ( -2 ) and 11 ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: DAs -ok, spectro guider -ok, MIGs -ok, Spectrograph IN focus: needed pistoning (see the problem section). ----------------------------------------------------------------- Night: We started the night with cloudy skies and snow flurries. While waiting on the clouds we did some testing of tccPutAndWait. See the problem section for details. The clouds stayed around for the first 5 hours or so of the night. It then abruptly cleared, and looked like it would stay that way, so we started with the imager. Run 3696: Bias on telescope 06:20Z Run 3697: 33 S lambda range Skippy good from the start focus converged by frame 20 Start of ramp-up frame 25 lambda -10 Seeing hovered just above acceptable, teasing us with excursions into goodness. We gave up looking here after about an hour. Decided to try looking west of the meridian hoping for steadier and better seeing. 07:25Z Run 3698: 29, S lambda range -24 to 2 Skippy good from the start Focus good from the start ( seeing good too, 1.2" ) Frame 19 lambda -23, start of ramp. Seeing spike frame 182, lambda 1.4 Stayed high too long. SeeingRun declared it bad from frame 187, lambda 2.1 Seeing improved, so drift ended so we could back up and cover the bad patch. 09:44Z Run 3699: 29, S lambda range -2 to 35.5 Skippy good from start Focus good from the start ( seeing marginal 1.5" ) SeeingRun called everything acceptable until frame 100 Seeing improved starting about frame 105 After processing through about frame 105 seeingRun decided to call everything between frames 60 and 99 bad ( lambda 5.3 to 11.1 ) We chose not to back up. If it is decided that the region is unacceptable, the section up to frame 100 is marginal enough and large enough to warrant reimaging ( about an hour's worth ). Woohoo!! M51 is in dewar 6 r, frame 100! Seeing good (with a small patch of acceptable) from frame 100 Twilight at lambda of 33, frame 245. 12:20Z Run 3700: 29, S Donuts Frame 10 in focus Frame 14 +400 Frame 19 -400 Above frames on A sop session was started with a tcc connection. First a simple slew was made, and tccPutAndWait completed as soon as the slew end message showed up. Next a slew was made such that the altitude finished before the rotator. The altitude pin was put in before the rotator finished moving. Again, as soon as the slew end message was sent the prompt returned. This time a slew was made similar to the previous one, that is the altitude pin was put in before the rotator finished moving. Additionally, a stop button was pushed in when the last axis stopped moving ( rotator ), but just before the TCC said the slew was done ( a few seconds ). Still the sop prompt came back as soon as the slew end message appeared. Running a tccPutAndWait track command with the axes disabled worked just fine, again returning the prompt when the slew end message appeared. I also tried typing in the sop window during the slew to see if there was some bad interaction, and here is where a clue may come in. When I typed in the window, I saw my commands echoed. This is not the case when I am seeing these timeouts after issuing instChange. When I see the timeout problem, the GUI is locked up ( not uncommon while waiting for many commands to complete ), but the sop window itself is _completely_ unresponsive. You don't see characters echoed, and ctrl-C doesn't bail out. Whatever happens to the sop session it isn't the single mindedness of tccPutAndWait waiting to complete. There is something more going on.
