APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday March 6, 2003 (MJD 52705) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: Howard Brewington, Pete Newman Support: Eric Neilsen (FNAL, by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science, with observer training, this being Howard's first night driving. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Two plates done (936, 1265) while the Moon was up, then imaging the rest of the night with over 6 hours of data all in good seeing. Strip 27 S, -41 <= lambda <= -17 Strip 33 S, +5 <= lambda <= +62 (end of strip) A imager teamster failure took an age to recover from, but all was well. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- We are running a test iop version, iop v3_109_4, with a change to the time-out in tccPutAndWait. (Servers were started under this version). DAs - ok, spectro guider -ok, MIGs - ok. Spectrographs focus - (during test flat field, there was sp2 mechanicals problem, see the problem section) - spectrographs appeared to be in focus. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night: ------ Opened at sunset under clear sky and westerly breeze, so fingers crossed for a good night. Moon is up for another two hours, so we started with spectroscopy. Around 04:30Z, when we were changing instruments, the TPM plots of the primary and secondary mirror temperatures where haywire! About the same time TPM reported an m2 temperature error to watcher. Do we have bad connections somewhere? PR4917 opened. During imaging (see the detailed section below), we noted a significant 0.8 arcsec improvement in seeing between looking downwind to SE and upwind to NW. That is more that was expected. Is that perhaps an indication that the "Holloman baffle cloths" are blocking ventillation of the wind baffle? Watcher reported "AxisDTime:az (-0.3: 2003-03-07 06:12:06Z)", the first Axis DTime error we have seen in some time. The imager teamster died about 09:59:27Z and watcher reported "no gang transfers" errors. See problem section #2 for details. A "teamster 60' command in IOP restarted it. We saw an error from endNight, but it seemed to continue through it. See problem section #3 for details. endNight is continuing as this log is being mailed. Observing sequence: 01:46Z Plate 1265, cartridge 1. Done in 3 exposures. Started in during twilight, GSOGF. Problem with instChange afterwards lost us a few minutes - see problem section #1. 03:26Z Plate 936, cartridge 2. Done in 3 exposures. At this point, we have been measuring seeing consistently below 1.8 arcsec on the spectro guider. That is slightly over the criterion for switching to imaging, but all other conditions -- moon, time of night, wind, photometricity - are in favor, so we decide to switch and see ig the imager gets good seeing. See imagaing details section. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3701 23:31Z 23:48Z 100 O -133.68 -129.49 42 ignore doghouse bias 3702 05:01Z 05:16Z 100 O -51.08 -47.34 39 bias 3703 05:19Z 05:45Z 13 S -20.74 -14.26 56 ignore bad seeing 3704 05:53Z 07:51Z 27 S -44.67 -14.90 211 science 3705 07:56Z 12:08Z 33 N 1.39 64.56 435 science 3706 12:10Z 12:20Z 33 N 64.93 67.43 30 engineering donuts ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3702: Bias on telescope, T-bars unlatched, good. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Run 3703: Strip 13 S, -16 <= lambda <= 26, IGNORE (seeing no good) Frame Lambda Notes ----- ------ ---------------------------------------------------------- 14 -19.5 Skippy happy 21 -18.7 Focus converged, but seeing was never good. 56 -13.4 Give up, seening never good. Howard issued the instChange from SOPGUI. The telescope slewed tto the correct position, but a window warning "instChange timed out waiting for TCC to finish (or words to that effect) appeared, and Howard saw repeated "To kill this message, 'schedule ..." messages in his SOP window that did not stop until we did issue the schedule command. Control did not return to the SOPGUI window until that was done. Here is the stack trace from the time-out window: timed out waiting for the TCC to complete command track 121,90 mount /rotangle=0 /rottype=mount while executing "error $errorMessage" invoked from within "if {[getclock] > $startTime + $timeout} { set errorMessage "timed out waiting for the TCC to complete command $tccCommand" murmur "tccPutAn ..." (procedure "tkButtonUp" line 3) invoked from within "tkButtonUp .sgui.instchange.go" (command bound to event) Eric was called and after discussion, we decided to continue and he will investigate further during the day. In fact, the next instrument change (to the imager) was the last of the night, and we used TCC commands instead of the instChange command. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Problem #2 - imager teamster died --------------------------------- Shortly after 10Z, watcher reported "no gang transfers" erros while we were imaging. A 'teamster 60' command in IOP confirmed that the old teamster had died and a new one was started. The murmur log contained the following death cry from the old teamster: 2003-03-07 09:59:27Z sdsshost TMS 225027 TEXTONLY Gangs transfer: id1:1/1 id2:1/1 id3:1/1 id4:1/1 id5:1/1 id6:1/1 ad1:1/1 ad2:1/1 ad3:1/1 ad4:1/1 -> unix 2003-03-07 09:59:29Z sdsshost TMS 225027 dsc_E_shareLost Access to shared data area at 0x18000000 lost 2003-03-07 09:59:29Z sdsshost TMS 225027 dsc_E_writeFail Write failed to PT icc22 CSB=0x80430010 2003-03-07 09:59:29Z sdsshost TMS 225027 dsc_E_writeFail Write failed to rmt=0x1848CE7C cnt=0x00002288 2003-03-07 10:00:23Z sdsshost IDA 18049 TEXTONLY Reaping 225027 2003-03-07 10:08:55Z sdsshost IDA 66002 TEXTONLY The old teamster, PID 225027, appears to have died; restarting We then saw many messages like this in the murmur log: 2003-03-07 10:15:07Z sdsshost TMS 418118 TEXTONLY Waiting for command response from id6 (crate 2, ICC 2), data server (client 1) Following folklore, we ran the ptvmeTest commands to see what was what im> ptvmeTest -n 1 -a 0x18000000 PID: 420775 IOPB size: 64 bytes ping: no operation: read loopCnt: 1 (defaulted) 100 loops per dot LWordCnt: 0x00000001 (defaulted) controller: 0 (defaulted) remNode: 1 --> /dev/ptvme0n1 remAddr: 0x18000000 (defaulted) IxferMode: 0x00 (defaulted) TxferMode: 0x00 (defaulted) but that then seemed to hang up the IOP session for at least a few minutes. As predicted in folklore, gans transfers restarted after a few minutes, although that teaamster died when the hung IOP was killed, and another had to be started. This took some time, as a new IOP took many minutes to get to its prompt (I guess because the DA was so busy anyway). We did not complete the other ptvmeTest's from folklore as it was taking a very long time to start IOP sessions and we did not want to hang any we already had open! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Problem #3 - endNight error message During a full endNight, we saw the following error: Fri Mar 7 12:44:15 GMT 2003 Starting /data/photo/52705/3704 archiving. 917576 blocks to archive.
