APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday March 22, 2003 (MJD 52721) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (swing) Mike Harvanek (night) Steph Snedden (night) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! First night of the dark run. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaged Stripe 15 S from lambda= -28 to lambda = +23 (including ramp) under variable seeing. Declared three plates done as well. A good night, overall. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: ================== AZ alignment pin is slightly off the middle long line. The spectrographs were all in focus. No adjustment required. goSpecFocus sequence starts at 19942. The first postCalib's flat exposure failed in the similar manner as it did two days ago. I don't know how to reproduce it. The instrument was grabbed by me. I filed PR since it happened more than once. Mike got a memory fault core dump on sdsshost when starting his IOP session. See the problems section. 02:15Z We start with strip 28 N 02:33Z Focus loop converged, skippy in spec at frame 23, lambda=-31 Naturally, after starting our first drift, the wind shifted from the NW to the NE and the seeing went bad. We ended the drift to try another drift in a different direction. 02:47Z Strip 15 S Run 3803: We start at lambda =-28. Skippy and the focus loop were good by the start of ramp at -25, but the seeing was still bad. Since it looked like the trend was toward better seeing, we let the drift run for awhile. 03:11Z Run 3804: Seeing had improved so we restart Strip 15 S at lambda -27. 03:13Z Frame 11, lambda=-26, start of ramp. Focus and skippy in spec by frame 11, Seing was variable. The first 90 frames to lambda -14 should probably be redone, but Steve can weigh in on this. After that, although the seeing was still variable, it stayed in the good to acceptable range. Went through 1/2 of the Leo Triplet (M66, and half of M65) in column 6. Nice. 05:20Z Az axis aborted at frame 220, lambda=5. Relevant watcher messages are in the problems section. No smoking gun. We were nowhere near a wrap. 05:25Z Run 3805: Strip 15 S start lambda = 2. Skippy & focus good from the start. We continue on after the Az abort. We noticed some noise in u2 at the beginning of the drift that tapered off after a few frames. Someone (Connie?) should have a look. The noisy frame is 383805_11_32.fits, the normal frame after it settled down is 3805_17_32.fits. Both are saved in ~snedden on 'host. 06:49Z Ended drift at lambda=23, frame 144. 06:51Z Run 3806: bias on telescope. 07:06Z Ended bias drift after 31 frames. 07:08Z Run 3807: Doughnuts. Saved frames to /data/photo/optics/52721 Frame 11 - in focus at -419 Frame 15 - +300 out at -119 Frame 24 - -300 out at -720 Visually, collimation looked good, with the usual astigmatism & bright zone. 07:52Z Completed switch to spectroscopy. Cartridge 8, plate 1020. Stars on slew. Since this plate already had signal, we finished it in one exposure of 1200 s. Declared done. 08:53Z Cartridge 3, plate 914. No stars on slew, no FK5. An educated guess offset found the FK5. Declared this plate done with a total exposure time of 4200 s (the field was not too far from the Moon). Mike lost his guide stars for a couple of guide iterations for an unknown reason. No slips were detected. The guider recovered the stars quickly. It appeared as if the telescope did an offset of about 10 arcsec. 10:53Z Cartridge 5, plate 1050. No stars on slew, but the FK5 was at the edge of fiber 10. Declared this plate done with a total exposure time of 270 s. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
