APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday March 27, 2003 (MJD 52726) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Atsuko Nitta Night: Dan Long Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Only open for about an hour tonight. No data taken, but some amazingly bad seeing observed. SP1 collimator motor C isn't working properly. There's an inch of partly cloudy on the ground. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: sp2 refocused. sp1 in the process of refocusing. Both spectrographs in spec, but there is a problem with the collimator in SP1. See the problem section for details. Night: We are now running v3_113_1 of IOP/SOP. It has a one line fix to remove a debug statement to murmur in tccPutAndWait. So no more inundating the murmur log and logTool during instChange. 01:00Z Waiting on wind/dust/nearby radar echoes. 02:30Z Opened and turned fans on 02:30Z Cartridge 2 995: 03:03Z gotoField 03:13Z Absolutely atrocious seeing. Varying focus by +/-500 results in the same fiber filling blob. 03:40Z Seeing still unmeasurably bad on the guider. The 3.5m is getting 7.6 arcseconds fwhm!! 04:00Z Clouds start moving in. We decide to close. 07:30Z Humidity gets too high. Doors closed, fans off. 09:00Z Starts snowing. Looks like we're done for the night. 10:30Z Still snowing, and it's starting to accumulate. Yep, we're done. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3822 23:37Z 23:53Z 100 O -111.50 -107.50 41 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 20085, plate -9999 ------- 23:33 20085 0.0 bias ----- sequence 20086, plate 1240 ------- 23:43 20086 10.0 flat test 23:48 20087 2.1 arc test 23:51 20088 2.1 arc test 00:13 20089 2.1 arc test 00:16 20090 2.1 arc test 01:29 20091 0.0 bias 01:32 20092 2.1 arc test 01:34 20093 2.1 arc test 01:43 20094 10.0 flat test 02:00 20095 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Stays: JLCloudy 1 Stays: JLCloudy 2 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:05Z 2 995 1.00000 0 1166 0 46 54.9 -0.4 17 12 - Hah! ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:30Z 42 23 16 302 (WNW) 2474 - Mostly Clear 00:01Z 39 22 10 275 (W) 2901 - Mostly Clear 00:32Z 39 20 14 306 (NW) 2199 - Mostly Clear 01:03Z 38 21 19 311 (NW) 2075 - Mostly Clear 01:35Z 36 21 20 307 (NW) 1580 - Mostly Clear 02:07Z 33 21 22 322 (NW) 793 - Mostly Clear 02:40Z 31 20 13 314 (NW) 1028 - Partly Cloudy 03:11Z 32 20 19 355 (NNW) 784 - Mostly Clear 03:44Z 31 20 23 318 (NW) 686 - Mostly Clear 04:16Z 30 20 4 346 (NNW) 624 - Partly Cloudy 04:48Z 28 20 9 14 (NNE) 612 - Partly Cloudy 05:20Z 29 21 5 310 (NW) 434 - Partly Cloudy 05:52Z 28 21 12 34 (NE) 588 - Mostly Cloudy 06:25Z 29 21 5 356 (NNW) 629 - Cloudy 06:57Z 29 20 0 349 (NNW) 675 - Cloudy 07:29Z 25 20 9 87 (E) 390 - Cloudy 08:01Z 23 19 9 88 (E) 304 - Cloudy 08:33Z 20 18 12 59 (ENE) 269 - Cloudy 09:06Z 19 17 12 78 (ENE) 166 - Snow Flurries 09:38Z 18 13 17 75 (ENE) 83 - Lt Snow 10:10Z 17 13 17 58 (ENE) 169 - Lt Snow 10:47Z 16 12 17 64 (ENE) 388 - Snow ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Stowed at 30 deg alt, Cartridge 2 installed. It seems to try to move, but there is no record of the motion in the collimator position shown in status. This was first noticed by Atsuko during the afternoon checkout when she was refocusing the spectrographs. See below for the SOP output. Jon connected directly to the mechanicals and saw odd messages about limit switches being activated then not, even though no motion took place. The motor would make a very short noise any time a move to it was issued, regardless of size or direction of move. There is a suspicion that the controller is having problems. Jon tried connecting a spare motor to the C-controller and it exhibited the same behavior as the actuator motor mounted on the C position on SP1. As SP1 is currently in spec according to collimate and SoS, it was decided to leave things alone for tonight, and check on the motor controller tomorrow. Spectrographs had to be refocused today. The first collimate (frame 20087, 20088) reported all cameras to be out of focus. Before refocus: sp1 Coll_motor_A 3820 Coll_motor_B 3787 Coll_motor_C 2585 sp2 Coll_motor_A 6322 Coll_motor_B 6326 Coll_motor_C 6320 After refocus: sp2 mechPiston 2991 issued. Coll_motor_A 9314 Coll_motor_B 9320 Coll_motor_C 9312 sp1 encountered problem. mechPiston 3440 was applied. The mechPiston command hung -- the prompt did not return for a long time. Spectrographs were grabbed by the sop session used to issue the mechPiston command. I issued contrl-c and it gave the following message. sp1> mechPiston 3440 quitting if breakCheck called..., or tell me three times (1) motor c: Interrupted function call quitting if breakCheck called..., or tell me three times (2) Interrupted function call quitting if breakCheck called..., or tell me three times (3) level=0 Error: problem with motors (see previous error message) Original motor positions: {a 3820} {b 3787} {c 2585} Current motor positions: unknown mechSend command said the Coll-motors are now at: Coll_motor_A 7271 Coll_motor_B 7227 Coll_motor_C 2592 It looks like A and B moved, but C did not.
