APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday March 29, 2003 (MJD 52728) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- About 2 hours of good imaging (16N -63 to -35); almost equal amount of time chasing bad seeing. 2 2/3 plates done. Photometric night, but with bad seeing for most of it. One PTVME problem with the spectro crate - a ptvmeReset fixed it. A few questions on data QA. We have reason to believe the 3.5m mask on the cloud camera is not positioned quite right. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- During afternoonCheck, we noticed the bias in astrometric chip 76 looked weird. It also looked weird in the science scan. This is a known problem, right? We also noticed the az alignment pointer was about 1/2 tick off the center position. We also noticed, when checking the nightly spectro bias that the r exposures seemed to have some "hair" at the top of the frame - short vertical streaks (like Christmas tree garland) that had slightly different counts than the rest of the frame. What is this? The night started with good conditions, so we setup for imaging. We started with stripe 15N with a startLambda of -40, well before twilight, the the data are good by twilight at lambda=-34. We were in focus almost immediately using -300 -20*T. Skippy never worked for this drift, which we expect is due to leftover calibration offsets mucking up the pointing, so we stopped the drift, cleared the offsets and started over, this time starting at lambda=-37. This time skippy and focus were happy from the start. We crossed lambda=-34 at ~frame 25. The desired startLambda, of -32 passed around frame 38. Unfortunately, the seeing was never good here. We were getting ~2", the 3.5m was getting ~1.5". We decided to try a different stripe: 16 N at -63, starting the scanStripe at lambda=-67. lambda=-65 passed at frame ~16; -63 at ~30. skippy finally ran after many attempts (even after starting up skyGang which showed so many stars as it would have been useless had we really needed to use it - thank goodness for better pointing). Skippy was good from the start. The cloud camera timeline showed a blip about 03:30Z, but we didn't see it in the images at the time so cannot comment on its effect on the data. The 3.5m folk did see it and think it was either someone outside with a flashlight, or a light on in the 3.5m and likely not a cloud, so we may be OK. This happened again around 04:25 and appeared to be a bight spot off the edge of the 3.5m mask, which must not be positioned quite right. This effect repeated a couple of time during the night. SonOfKent via seeingRun (via seeingCurse) reported good seeing at Frame 75 Longitude -56.3. but most of the data before this look only slightly worse, so we are going to count all the prior data as being acceptable as well. SoK reported bad seeing (it was ugly, actually) starting around Frame 199 Longitude -37.6. At frame 324, we note the 3.5m is getting 1.4" seeing and is pointed nearly exactly the same place we are. The seeing never got better so, we decided to surf around the sky a bit to see if we could get something useful (especially since the 3.5m was still getting reasonable, if not great, seeing). We try again at 15 N, starting at lambda=-36. We passed lambda=-34 at ~frame 13 and science start at lambda=-32 ~frame who cares since the seeing sucked anyhow. We decided to try again, this time 31 S starting at lambda=3 (science to start at lambda=8). Seeing was terrible here, too, and now the 3.5m tells us their seeing was highly variable and the 1.4" reading earlier was on the low end of their scattered seeing. We gave up and went to spectroscopy. Starting with cart 4 plate 1228. GSOTGTF. Finished in three exposures for 46 minutes. Next, cart 9 plate 1287. No GSOTGTF, but a clearing of offsets from the previous plate left guide stars. The guide stars were not well-centered and we futzed around for a while with that before guessing it was due to a bad guiderFlat. We took a new guiderFlat and things looked much better. On second thought the no GSOTGTF was probably just another case of the first guider frame not showing any signal. We finished this plate in three exposures for 37 minutes. Next, cart 5 plate 1168. After the gotoField, Howard's SOP crashed with a PTVME error (see Problems). We got going again with a ptvmeReset and lost about 10 minutes total. We only got two exposures before twilight hit. endNight was still running as this log was set out. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End
