APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday April 6, 2003 (MJD 52736) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Howard Brewington Steph Snedden Support: French Leger (by phone) Russell Owen (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Some dust and high winds, but four plates finished (one already had signal). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We completed afternoon checkout with no problems. Spectro focus check results are in the problems section, as usual. With much less dust in the air than this time yesterday, we set up for spectroscopy and opened at sunset. 02:24Z CARTRIDGE 1, PLATE 1296 Needed an FK5 star to find the field. Had scale change problems (see the problems section), then had to close for high winds followed by high dust. After the dust settled down again... 08:02Z CARTRIDGE 6, PLATE 1279 Needed an FK5 to find the guide stars. Efficiency and seeing were good. Finished this plate with a total exposure of 1920 sec. Although the conditions were good enough for a switch to imaging, we would barely get an hour of imaging if there were no delays of any kind. Even one delay would risk losing the time spent on imaging, so we played it safe and stayed with spectroscopy. 09:17Z CARTRIDGE 9, PLATE 1284 Stars on gotoField. Seeing a little worse. Still, we finished it with a total exposure of 1800 sec (we were at low airmass). 10:19Z CARTRIDGE 4, PLATE 1292 Guide stars on gotoField. Seeing was better. Finished with a total exposure of 1800 sec. 11:14Z CARTRIDGE 7, PLATE 1048 This plate already had S/N^2 of 9.7. We finished it with one exposure of 600 sec. The smear sky levels suffered from twilight, but we think it is okay, and we declared the plate done. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3848 23:35Z 23:53Z 100 O -102.03 -97.66 42 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 20303, plate -9999 ------- 23:21 20303 0.0 bias ----- sequence 20304, plate 1296 ------- 23:39 20304 0.0 bias ----- sequence 20305, plate -9999 ------- 00:08 20305 0.0 bias ----- sequence 20306, plate 1296 ------- 00:20 20306 10.0 flat 00:22 20307 2.0 arc 00:26 20308 2.1 arc focus check 00:29 20309 2.1 arc " 00:47 20310 2.1 arc " 00:49 20311 2.1 arc " ----- sequence 20312, plate 1279 ------- 08:14 20312 10.0 flat 08:17 20313 2.0 arc 08:34 20314 720.1 target 08:47 20315 600.1 target 09:00 20316 600.1 target 09:07 20317 240.0 smear ----- sequence 20318, plate 1284 ------- 09:18 20318 10.0 flat 09:21 20319 2.0 arc 09:36 20320 600.1 target 09:49 20321 600.1 target 10:02 20322 600.1 target 10:09 20323 240.0 smear ----- sequence 20324, plate 1292 ------- 10:22 20324 10.0 flat 10:24 20325 2.0 arc 10:38 20326 600.1 target 10:51 20327 600.1 target 11:04 20328 600.1 target 11:11 20329 240.0 smear ----- sequence 20330, plate 1048 ------- 11:25 20330 10.0 flat 11:28 20331 2.0 arc 11:41 20332 600.1 target 11:48 20333 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:22Z 6 1279 217.72 -0.0046 66.15 0.0022 52.79 -0.0210 1.000050 09:25Z 9 1284 222.86 -0.0035 66.42 0.0028 58.59 -0.0024 1.000180 10:27Z 4 1292 235.64 -0.0049 74.22 0.0021 65.88 -0.0093 1.000110 11:32Z 7 1048 230.30 -0.0014 56.71 0.0008 76.69 -0.0205 0.999890 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6245 Stays: JL6246 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:22Z 6 1279 1.00005 -493 630 -100 218 66.2 1.4 15 271 - 1.8 09:25Z 9 1284 1.00018 -1776 -433 -100 223 66.4 1.1 9 265 - 2.0 10:27Z 4 1292 1.00011 -1085 126 -100 236 74.2 0.6 14 295 - 1.7 11:32Z 7 1048 0.99989 1085 1960 -100 230 56.7 -0.1 16 308 - 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:13Z 41 0 6 244 (WSW) 447 - pcl 23:44Z 42 3 12 254 (WSW) 505 - " 00:14Z 41 2 14 207 (SSW) 515 - " 00:45Z 39 2 17 250 (WSW) 728 - " 01:16Z 37 2 19 238 (WSW) 759 - " 01:49Z 35 -2 16 243 (WSW) 1109 - " 02:22Z 34 -3 17 233 (SW) 1021 - " 02:54Z 35 -3 12 233 (SW) 772 - " 03:26Z 35 -1 15 261 (W) 629 - " 03:58Z 35 -1 15 258 (WSW) 1026 - " 04:29Z 35 -1 14 251 (WSW) 2768 - " 04:59Z 35 -1 18 267 (W) 4832 - mostly clear 05:29Z 35 -1 10 259 (W) 7179 - " 05:59Z 34 -1 8 262 (W) 5916 - " 06:29Z 34 -1 9 307 (NW) 5060 - " 06:59Z 35 0 13 273 (W) 1127 - " 07:30Z 35 0 12 285 (WNW) 649 - " 08:01Z 35 0 11 275 (W) 791 - " 08:34Z 34 0 10 255 (WSW) 842 - " 09:05Z 33 0 8 263 (W) 980 - " 09:38Z 34 0 9 282 (WNW) 905 - " 10:10Z 33 0 12 265 (W) 999 - " 10:41Z 33 0 5 271 (W) 897 - " 11:11Z 32 0 11 311 (NW) 543 - " 11:42Z 31 0 14 304 (NW) 620 - " 12:14Z 31 0 8 331 (NNW) 555 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z Doors cracked, blowers and cone fans on. 01:38Z Opened enclosure 12:07Z Closed enclosure. After the scale change finished, we got the following message from the TCC: "0 0 F PrimDesMountOutOfRange="TTTFFF" 0 0 W Text="failed to adjust collimation and focus" We called French and Russell. Russell realized that we had really reached the limit of the actuator motion, and the fix was to simply back off by reducing the scale. But the question remains, why did this plate ask for a scale change too large for the telescope to handle? Is something wrong with the plate? Unfortunately, we couldn't figure this out tonight because wind and dust forced us to close, and the plate was expired when we were able to open again. We had no problems with any of the other plates tonight. We suggest testing this plate again tomorrow to see if it asks for the same scale change.
