APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday April 21, 2003 (MJD 52751) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o Finished 4 plates. Seeing was not so great. o We like the new monx1 monitor. Everything is very crisp and has beautiful color. o The outer cartridge bay door did not want to close and we used the stop button keep the door closed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ---------- Spectros in good collimation. All other system checked out fine. Night ------ 01:30Z The dust came down below 2000 -- we can open at sunset. Cartridge 2 Plate 1236 Since it was too bright to see the guide star, we first went to fk5 and then went to the field and waited until we could see the guide stars. The stars were in the fibers once we were able to see them. The seeing seemed variable and not so good. The focus loop looked pretty flat around 2.5"ish. We completed the spectroQA for this plate. This is the first time we are using this procedure since we both were not on night shift the past two months. So we are a bit slow --- it took us about an hour to go through all the QAing. Once we get used to the commands, their syntax etc., we should be able to do it in half the time. As far as we could tell all is well with data. Around 05:07Z Cartridge 1 Plate 1221 Guide stars on gotoField. We completed the spectroQA for this plate and all seems well as far as we could tell. QATopTen gave NO info on WDs for this plate. It must mean that there are not targetted as WDs. :( What a boring plate. Wind is shifting directions and the air temperature is climbing. We finished this in 4 exposures. 07:20Z Cartridge 7 Plate 1049 Guide stars on gotoField. The seeing has improved. Now it is about 2". Clouds started coming in during the first science exposure. We noticed that the spectroQA instruction says to monitor one set of arc and flat every night. We have been doing it for every plate. We also noticed that when both of us try to do quickDisplayAll simultaneously, it takes a looong time for the display to come up. (jurek was checking flat while I was checking arc.) There are two white dwarfs (one targeted as WD and another as HOT_STD) on this plate. We completed the spectroQA for this plate and all seems well. We finished this plate in three exposures. 08:40Z Cartridge 6 Plate 1231 Stars on gotoField. The clouds went away and the seeing worsened.The nominal observing time ran out before we could finish this plate. We completed the spectroQA for this plate and all seems well. We got two science exposures. 09:39Z Cartridge 4 Plate 1166 Jurek's startMon did not display new guider image when he went to field. So he exited and restarted startMon and all was fine. The seeing improved again -- 2.0" now. We completed spectroQA and all seems well. It now takes me about 2-science-exposure worth of time to get spectroQA done. Much improvement from the first plate of the night! We finished this plate in three exposures. endNight completed happily. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3884 00:01Z 00:28Z 100 O -80.85 -74.15 57 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 20513, plate -9999 ------- 00:07 20513 0.0 bias ----- sequence 20514, plate 1166 ------- 00:16 20514 10.0 flat 00:19 20515 2.0 arc 00:28 20516 2.1 arc 00:30 20517 2.1 arc ----- sequence 20518, plate -9999 ------- 01:22 20518 0.0 bias ----- sequence 20519, plate 1236 ------- 02:42 20519 10.0 flat ----- sequence 20519, plate 1236 ------- 19.6 19.0 20.4 16.7 02:45 20520 2.0 arc 03:16 20521 1500.1 target 03:47 20522 1500.1 target 04:21 20523 1800.1 target 04:29 20524 240.0 smear 04:56 20525 1500.1 target 04:59 20526 10.0 flat 05:02 20527 2.0 arc ----- sequence 20528, plate 1221 ------- 20.8 15.6 21.8 14.6 05:15 20528 10.0 flat 05:18 20529 2.0 arc 05:44 20530 1200.1 target 06:17 20531 1800.1 target 06:41 20532 1200.1 target 07:04 20533 1200.1 target 07:11 20534 240.0 smear 07:14 20535 10.0 flat 07:17 20536 2.0 arc ----- sequence 20537, plate 1049 ------- 15.2 15.8 14.9 16.8 07:37 20537 10.0 flat 07:39 20538 2.0 arc 07:57 20539 900.1 target 08:12 20540 700.1 target 08:27 20541 700.1 target 08:34 20542 240.0 smear ----- sequence 20543, plate 1281 ------- 8.5 9.6 8.0 8.7 08:48 20543 10.0 flat 08:50 20544 2.0 arc 09:11 20545 900.1 target 09:29 20546 900.1 target ----- sequence 20547, plate 1166 ------- 14.6 20.5 17.3 23.1 09:47 20547 10.0 flat 09:49 20548 2.0 arc 10:10 20549 900.1 target 10:25 20550 700.1 target 10:48 20551 1200.1 target 10:56 20552 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:10Z 1 1221 -55.97 0.0049 54.43 0.0012 134.96 -0.0092 1.000130 07:45Z 7 1049 166.03 -0.0016 74.91 0.0009 -17.47 -0.0059 0.999860 09:15Z 6 1281 230.02 0.0007 52.81 0.0023 80.83 -0.0030 1.000130 10:00Z 4 1166 217.61 0.0008 65.77 0.0009 53.02 -0.0050 1.000040 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6284 Stays: JL6285 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:14Z 4 1166 1.00000 0 1182 -75 121 30.0 9.9 14 124 01:44Z 2 1236 1.00000 0 1279 0 121 30.0 8.5 15 128 gdr 3.5 06:25Z 2 1236 1.00003 -295 710 -220 -60 51.7 6.6 11 173 gdr 3.0 07:45Z 7 1049 0.99986 1381 2043 -225 166 74.9 6.8 20 200 gdr 2.1 09:15Z 6 1281 1.00013 -1283 -141 -250 230 52.9 5.5 22 187 gdr 3.0 10:00Z 4 1166 1.00004 -394 662 -150 218 65.8 5.7 17 204 gdr 2.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:45Z 48 25 8 179 (S) 2326 - 00:18Z 49 27 20 127 (SE) 2064 - 00:50Z 48 28 18 124 (SE) 2038 - 01:22Z 47 27 16 143 (SE) 2075 - 01:53Z 44 29 13 103 (ESE) 1216 - 02:25Z 41 30 12 86 (E) 834 - 02:55Z 40 30 12 86 (E) 866 - 03:27Z 39 30 15 86 (E) 883 - 03:58Z 38 30 11 91 (E) 938 - 04:28Z 38 30 10 84 (E) 863 - 05:00Z 37 29 13 111 (ESE) 935 - 05:31Z 38 29 11 123 (ESE) 1128 - 06:05Z 41 30 10 167 (SSE) 1583 - 06:37Z 43 31 16 153 (SSE) 1481 - 07:09Z 44 31 19 161 (SSE) 1595 - 07:40Z 44 32 13 179 (S) 1613 - 08:14Z 43 33 23 181 (S) 1365 - 08:45Z 42 34 19 187 (S) 1421 - 09:16Z 41 32 17 182 (S) 1388 - 09:50Z 41 30 19 199 (SSW) 1466 - 10:22Z 43 19 14 203 (SSW) 1589 - 10:55Z 42 24 11 195 (SSW) 1789 - 11:27Z 40 28 8 197 (SSW) 1707 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:30Z: Open, fans on 11:10Z: Closed, fans off No interlock bypassed.
