APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday May 29, 2003 (MJD 52789) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Scot Kleinman Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! Imaging, we hope. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaging indeed, plus a smidgen of spectroscopy. Strip 16 S done from lambda=6 to lambda=61. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Afternoon checkout went without problems. No spectro focus check was done (imager on telescope). M3 engine inspection completed. Night: ------ We set up for imaging. By the way, did you know that Miller moths like to hide inside the fingertips of cryogloves? Stripe 16 S, runs 3970 through 3972: Bad seeing forced us to stop run 3970, back up and redo the bad spot. Later, marginal photometricity and another stretch of bad seeing caused us to back up again. We finished the strip just as clouds approached where we were pointing. We *may* have lost the last degree of the strip to clouds, as they were close by but not obviously in the field. Details are in the "Imaging Details" section. Perseverance furthers. 09:23Z - With the advent of clouds we switch to spectroscopy. Cartridge 1, plate 1343. We couldn't find even an FK5 at first. After putting in the offsets from two nights ago, the FK5 was there. We got two useful exposures in mostly cloudy conditions before twilight. endNight was running as I mail this. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3969 21:42Z 22:04Z 100 O -78.30 -72.64 52 bias 3970 03:14Z 05:02Z 16 S -2.76 24.46 196 science Why are the rest of the runs missing from the log? ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Stripe 16 S, runs 3970 - 3972: ------------------------------ 03:15Z Started this drift during twilight so that we would reach the start of ramp at the end of astronomical twilight. Focus loop converged by frame 16. Skippy in spec from the start. 03:41Z Start of ramp, lambda=4, frame 53. 03:49Z Start of science, lambda=6, frame=66 Lambda 15.5, frame 129, seeing degraded as the wind started to shift direction. We hold out to see what conditions are like when the wind shift stops. 05:02Z We stop the drift at frame 188, lambda=24.3. The wind shift appears to have stopped, and seeing has improved. We back up to scan over the bad part. 05:05Z Stripe 16 S, run 3971, start lambda=13.5. Focus and Skippy in spec from the beginning. 05:11Z lambda=15, frame 18, start of recovery of the bad data. 07:30Z ended drift at lambda=50, frame 251. We stopped because of a combination of 6 degrees of bad seeing and marginal photometricity at the same time. 07:33Z, Stripe 16 S, run 3972, start lambda=38.6. We back up again to recover the bad data. 09:03Z, lambda=61, frame 157 - end of science 09:11Z, lambda=63, frame 171 - end of ramp. There may have been a few clouds during the last 1 degree of the ramp, but this strip can be considered done. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el
